I guess the region lock worked or maybe the skill-gap equalized even without it's help. Region lock is no longer necessary(assuming it did really help) if that was the aim for it.

There is probably some law that organizing parties of an event can set limitations for their participants, like nationality for example. They could try to argue that region lock is racial discrimination, but that doesn't really leave the best image...

It's incredibly obvious that this is an unfair system, and I've never heard Blizzard explicitly try to claim it's somehow "fair." Rather, they just avoid discussing its unfair nature (you might claim that refusal to address it constitutes justification, but I think there's a difference).

Out of top 8 players at Blizzcon we had 2 foreigners. One of them playing his best games ever(and kinda derping Classic). We are talking about 1 foreigner being top SC2 players, the rest is not there. Code S material foreigners - if they're in their good form we have what - five? (Serral, Neeb, Raynor, Special Major, Scarlett) To what, another 12 Koreans? The region lock should be based on your skill not your origin, THAT would make it fair. But that would lock Serral out of the WCS which would be really funny (and let some top Koreans in bad shape into WCS)

Admittedly I don't think they've explicitly said it's a "fair" system, but they seem to believe that having foreigners play in both regions, while koreans are restricted, is perfectly fine and not an issue. They also ignore the obvious differences in requirements to compete on both sides. This goes for most of the big figures/casters in the foreign scene as well.

I agree that was a painfully tone-deaf comment from Kim (who's not directly involved in SC2 esports anymore, AFAIK), one that the SC2 esports team probably wishes she could have phrased better.

Rather than opening up totally, make a KR slot and give some money for the top-4 and granted top 2 to the WCS circuit. That would better support the whole KR environment and gives opportunity for new KR player. That might actually be a great Idea: Do some KR Qualifier for WCS Circuit (more games Whoop!) and give some Seeds (to Group Stage #3?) + some travel money. EDIT: If you do these qualifiers somewhere at the same time as GSL round of 4 or sth, there is a good chance the top 4 of GSL won't compete and new blood has a chance

It's hard to use learned phrases when you have 160 characters to say it They can't publically say it's a fair thing(because obviously it isn't) and they can't say it's unfair either They will do the political dance of answering and not saying anything specific

Edit: adding a KR qualifier etc what has ben said above seems the best.

I've never had a very strong opinion on the region lock but I agree with others that it probably isn't as necessary now and it should be relaxed to some extent. The scene has grown enough that I think there will be more opportunities for more non-Korean or international tournaments and it would be great to see more Korean players in tournaments outside of Korea.
