Edit: on second thought, it may have been cooked, so I dunno If it was unagi, the grilled eel with soy sauce, then of course its bad as sashimi. The kabayaki sauce is very salty and eel is a bit salty and super rich due to its fat which is why its so important to have something to counter it. Plus it does not help that a lot of the eels served in restaurants are precooked which makes them even saltier. That is why its most commonly served as nigiri or served over rice. This sums up the way eel is best served imo

I just don't know why anyone has not thought of making a broth/sauce that complements the mashed potatoes more. In Japan, there are restaurants specifically to cooking eel with rice and it's probably the best way to eat eel, it just annoys me to see eel done in such an unpleasant way. Does it taste like grilled octopus or what?

No no no, grilled eel has a very rich buttery, sweet, taste and it breaks apart in your mouth very easily unlike octopus which is very light and chewy. When I say rich, it's not like French food rich, but its definitely one of the more bold Japanese foods out there aside from ramen.

But yeah, absolutely nothing like octopus. If you have to compare it to anything, I guess mackerel would be closest, but I don't think it's really comparable to anything. We also eat baby eel here in Spain, which seems like a completely unsustainable practice, but maybe they're different eel?
