So on October 19th, 2017 this baby is going to hit the Windows 10 store (exclusively). Assets will be remade into full 3D, Limit size will be increased, Pathfinding will be improved, Attack move will be featured and most importantly - we get ladder.

Windows 10 only? didn't MS learn their lesson from Halo Wars 2?
Ensemble did such a nice job on Halo Wars 1 and the Age of Empires franchise its a cryin' shame MS shut them down only to resurrect these IPs via the Rent-A-Studio method.

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... -______-
Yeah man this fucking sucks.
I'm one of those weirdos who spent more time playing and mapping for AoE1 than 2 but I'm not installing that garbage just to be able to play the new version. I hope it's good and I hope the people who use Win10 enjoy it though.

If you have Windows 10, it's already installed, you don't have a choice on that matter. If you don't have Windows 10, the game is not supported for your OS (Win 7&8 are not supported).

Sorry I don't see how this contradicts anything I said. I'm well aware of what you're saying.
But for me personally no amount of hostageware games, no matter how good or how anticipated will convince me to switch to Win10. And as far as I know most PC gamers feel the same way. MS is dooming its games to failure by continuing down this path; it's doubly worse for games like AoE which are only on Win10 store and not Xbox One (because of course an AoE game wouldn't work well on controller).

Umm Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7. Most likely in 5 years or a similar time frame. So next time you buy a new computer it seems reasonable to me for you to switch to Windows 10 so you don't have to switch once you hit end of life on your OS.
As somebody that can have legit Windows 7 or legit Windows 10 installed, I have Windows 10. No ransomware or anything that made me switch. Was just time to re-install and thus I upgraded, no real difference for my personal use. At work I find I like Windows 10 over Windows 7. Your specific user case might be different from mine though. I just don't think most PC gamers feel as you do. There is hardly any gaming difference between 7 and 10 for the vast majority of users. Even in 7 you had to run Dosbox or emulate older OSes in some cases, since I switched OS I havn't hit a single game I couldn't run that I could beforehand. There are likely some but I assume the majority does not run into them.
I did google a bit and most places talking about gaming seemed to recommend Windows 10 for DX12 support and slightly better in-game performance. Windows 7 if you play a lot of late 90's, early 2000's games. Earlier than that and you have to emulate in both cases.
Edit
Just thought of the best showcase: http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/ Over 50% of steam users are on Windows 10, which I would say qualify as PC gamers.

A lot of people don't appreciate giving all their information to Microsoft, or having updates forced down their throat at the most inopportune times, some of which actually manage to break some of the software that they use on a daily basis.
But I guess it's easy to dismiss these objective problems just because your particular use case isn't affected that much.
Anyway I'm not here to argue or troll or flame people for their choice of OS. You do you.
+EDIT: Interesting graph, although I have a very hard time believing that.

I thought you meant the Games for Windows Live or whatever it was called beforehand, so I pointed out it was preinstalled. My bad, didn't realize you were talking about Win10.
To that end, rather than a final release of Age of Empires: Definitive Edition on October 19, we will instead be inviting thousands more players from the community into our closed beta between now and launch to allow for more in-depth testing across single player campaign, multiplayer balance, fine-tuning the lobby, etc.
We don’t have a final release date to share quite yet, but are targeting early 2018. In the meantime, we will be actively engaging with everyone participating in the closed beta to gather additional feedback, set up multiplayer sessions, and ensure that the Age of Empires: Definitive Edition that we are delivering is the Definitive Edition that you want.

No DE before 2018 it seems ... :-/
Good. Take as long as it takes, don't rush out a subpar and poorly tested disappointment like 99% of the AAA industry today.
That said I'm very curious how many people will participate in the beta program given the very limited reach of the game's platform.

Pretty much.
It would be a shame though if they ended up sacrificing the franchise for a lost cause like UWP exclusivity. Then again, it's not like we've had a franchise entry in the last decade, and the most recent one was... ahem.
Ok, hi. I lurk TL since I have nothing to say to you or share. I've been watching lots of AoE II and once you become familiar with names like Daut, Viper and Tatoh it was very refreshing to see them playing a qualifier for AoE DE. Now I never had the urge to play AoE II, since already as a child I found that the buildings take up too much space. AoE DE on the otherhand looks very pretty to me.
There is this guy, Winstons Waffles, he has cast an AoE DE game recently:
I think the casting is adequate, that match however, that match that was played, deserves more views. I never bought into AoE DE because of the Microsoft Store exclusivity, I am going to change that now, I am weak. I feel anyone that likes strategy games should be able to enjoy that match. That Winstons Waffles guy seems a little too humble, so yeah, I want to urge you to check out that match.
"We believe you should have choice in where you buy your PC games" - Microsoft after developing multiple identity disorder overnight. The consumers win though, so good news anyways.
@naughtDE was an enjoyable game. The heavy rush emphasis is a bit meh, hope that stabilizes over time.
Hey, so this game is released now, so I am bumping this thread. I've heard from proplayers and casters of the competitive scene that this definitive edition improves upon the HD-edition in almost every way. Not to mention the absolutely GORGEOUS new models. + Show Spoiler +
Of course multiplayer will probably be played to the best visibility options and least clutter, but you can play through all the campaigns in the single-player portion of the game with these beautiful graphics.
I bought it for sheer nostalgia and so far it's been an amazing playthrough. I dunno if this game is worth your money if you already bought the previous HD remake, but if you didn't, do treat yourself and buy this definitive edition of your childhood nostalgia train. IMO, well worth the 20 USD.
Ive considered getting it but i dont really want to support this remake frenzy. Ive already got the HD version and they kept pumping out DLCs for that for tens of € and now there's a new version yet again that obsoletes all of those. This wouldve been nice as free upgrade, but spending yet another 20€...a hard sell.
