Sign build Igni was melting everything, but then I ran into some Wraiths and I could not scratch them. I stacked all the sign intensity I could, but Igni and alternate Yrden just tickled. Heck, even the Igni initial damage tickled, it was the burns that did all the work. Also I remember in the early versions Igni would set pretty much any enemy on fire, even if they were 20+ levels above you. Now it just didn't anymore .
But even then, sign intensity increases the duration of Yrden or at the very least increases stamina regeneration so you can cast it more frequently. Yrden makes wraiths a non issue unless there's a ton of them.

Fights still take ages when your Yrden turret hits for like 200-300 and a wraith has over 10k health. Meanwhile a sword build can chop anything that's not a boss or a contract monster in 4-5 hits tops, but you have to actually dodge and get hits in as opposed to just spamming Igni and melting a whole pack of bandits at once.
As for signs not actually triggering secondary effects despite the character sheet showing good chances, turns out difficulty and monster level play a part too. Death March gives NPCs 10% resistance on top of the 1.6% they get per level. A level 40 creature on DM should have 74% chance to avoid knockdowns and such. On top of that, character stats page tooltip is wrong. The game does count chances over 100%, so with enough sign intensity you can still get effects on high level monsters.
On the bright side, I just unlocked BnW's mutations and Euphoria is simply ridiculous when combined with a few alchemy points. Chug 3 decoctions and bam, free 150%+ sign intensity and sword damage.

I am still on final preparations and im hitting like a truck at level 32 with my current Cat school build.
With the right oil and decoctions I am 2 shotting everything. I killed one of the lategame contract fiends with a single whirl attack. Superior alchemy is broken as fuck.

+ Show Spoiler +Triss basically just wants his dick. Yen can be a little harsh at times but I feel like its just because shes surprisingly more pragmatic and more long term thinker than geralt. Geralt kind of seems to have a core philosophy of helping people but helping more or less over time isn't something he concerns himself with. Yen adds perspective to him overall is the vibe ive gotten even from the first book and witcher 3

+ Show Spoiler +Chose Triss solely for how Yen reacts when you dump her after beating the djinn. It's pure gold, one of the best lines in the whole game. To be perfectly honest though, Shani is in a different league compared to them both, but alas, no real romance option there.

+ Show Spoiler + I opted not to do that mission at all and decided to romance Triss in Novigrad, any of you know which ending I'll get? I haven't fucked Yen this playthrough at all, only Kiera Metz, that MILFgaardian spy in Gwent tournament and Triss. I do I need to explicitly dump Yen during that quest to get Triss ending?

+ Show Spoiler +No you'll still end up with Triss. The only difference I notice is some slight variations in dialogue. if you openly reject Yen in the Djinn quest while romancing Triss then everyone pretty much knows the two of you are together and will comment about it. If you omit to do Yen's quest, you'll end up with Triss but you'll keep it quiet unless no one is around.

So was finally able to purchase the game, thanks Steam Summer sale!
Game is fun so far, however, I'm having a hard time figuring out some stuff, like I've encountered 3 monster dens so far but I couldn't destroy them as I don't know how to make bombs, I see it on my Alchemy page but I can't find any ingredients to make one. Any tips?
Currently level 5 and just finished the Bloody Baron Family Matters quest.

Herbalists or alchemists usually sell alchemy recipes and ingredients, save for monster ingredients. Herbalists have a little branch on your map and alchemists have a erlenmeyer flask type of icon. Otherwise the recipes for everything - potions, oils, bombs and decoctions are found in the wild, in chests all around the map. Sadly which potion you get and when is randomly generated so you can't beeline to swallow - enchanced swallow - superior swallow, for example. A lot of ingredients you can also find just in the wild, picking flowers for example. You can see them on your minimap as a green leaf, and when you activate your witcher's senses they'll glow.
Your most useful potions will be Thunderbolt and Swallow. Thunderbolts amps your damage and Swallow heals you over time. You don't have to "craft" them everytime you run out. Crafted once, you can only run out of uses. To replenish these potions simply meditate for 1 hour or longer. You should do it every time you're out of the pots, it will consume any spare alcohol you have, and you should never really run out of alcohol.

I didn't know you could replenish Thunderbolt. I got them before doing the Griffin quest and have only used once. Thanks for that.
There's a monster den in Orchard I couldn't destroy since I couldn't find the ingredients for Grape bomb, found one in Velen also. Funny, I just can't get over them and don't want to move on until I destroy them all.

Buddy you're going to have to get over that feeling eventually in this game. There's simply too much side shit to possibly complete as soon as you see it.

If Velen + Novigrad won't break you, Skellige and the smuggler caches surely will. You have my word.

I did that... once... ugh still remember how painful it was. Took about 6-7 hours to grab them all.
My advice, find a tv series and watch it while doing that.
Or you can just skip it and move on with your life.
Edit: minor rant that I thought I would get over but I seem to have not because it pissed me to no end. The + Show Spoiler + in BnW. Buggy piece of crap. The crossbow is the worst thing imaginable. Slow and tends to mess up animations badly. Thankfully, in regular combat, you can sort of ignore it by not using the thing at all, and underwater stuff is trivial. But for that little quest... No, Geralt, I don't want you to shoot the competition, there's too many people watching. If you fire too fast sometimes Geralt forgets to reload, wasting precious time. Had to cheese it to the extreme: Put a sheet of paper to use as overlay over the monitor, so I don't have to manually aim that thing. Lower mouse sensitivity for more accuracy. Uninstall all mods since they bugged out one of the targets, somehow. Get the double shot skill. Pray Geralt does not forget to reload too often. And worst of all: + Show Spoiler +having to skip on Gwent since it got tedious

Forcing yourself to do everything seems like the only way to make your time with this game awful.
Sure there's a lot of content and lot of the content is interesting but fuck doing every ? on the map.
Then again I guess some people genuinely enjoy picking up every god damn collectible and what not but I've never been into that.

i like clearing everything, doing it in my current play throu again

During boss fights I used the shield sign as it usually gives enough of a margin of error before I learn the movements of the boss.
