If you are from China and you don't know that then YOU are the idiot. Uhhh are you white? shows how much you know... Yes Cantonese is the common language on the streets in Hong Kong, but in 1997 Hong Kong went back to China, making Mandarin the national language. Now all schools are basically taught in Mandarin, and most of the legal issues are being done in Mandarin too. This is because it's the NATIONAL LANGUAGE. I didn't say more people spoke Mandarin, although now both people do speak both... Plz think before you post.

Yes I am white and from the UK so I am well aware that HK was handed back over to China. I didn't ask you anything genius. I made a friendly post related to the topic and you felt the need to quote me and call me an idiot. If you want to be a fastidious little shit then the official languages of Hong Kong are Mandarin, Cantonese and English. As far as I know, Putonghua(?), a standardised form of Mandarin, is the language the government promotes in schools across China. However in Chinese HK schools Cantonese is still the most common language spoken, for now. Yes both languages are taught. On a side note, sorry to ruin the tone of the thread Steve. I hope it can go back to being more, friendly?
