Since Square Enix probably doesn't want to sell the game at a huge loss, it is safe to assume that the game will be changed to bring it in line with contemporary RPG standards.
Again, I think the FF4 remake is the example to look to here. On a surface level, the combat system is more or less the same so that a veteran will feel that everything feels more or less familiar. However, being superficially similar still allowed plenty of room to rebalance/redesign encounters, and add auxiliary systems which significantly added to the depth of gameplay.

SMT4/Persona 3+4 were plenty interesting with menu-based turn-based combat.
Hell, even western releases like Legend of Grimrock and Lords of Xulima have used the menu based combat well.
That reaction was pretty awesome. I laughed pretty hard when he was randomly climbing the chair
Also either the girl is hard to impress or she didn't play FF7 before. It seemed like she was smiling because they were being idiots, but I didn't sense any excitement about the game at all.

Yeah this girl did not play FF7.
What I loved here is the "In case of Emergancy FF7 remake" button :D.
Tetsuya Nomura spoke with Famitsu to give more details about the upcoming game. If fans believe that they will see a "Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children" being translated to a game, the answer is wrong. In fact, the graphics and design of the characters will be so much better than the FF7 film.
"AC was made with technology from 10 years ago, and visually with how it was stylised and such it wouldn't fit in with the images for this game, so we're not using them," Nomura said. "We're at the level now where we can get the realism seen in the NPCs walking around town in the trailer without trouble, so that's why."
Also, fans should no longer expect a turn-based battle system as Nomura confirmed that the game's battle mechanics will be larger and more interactive.
"It has changed. I still can't give you any details, but the system feels more immersive," he said.
It amazes me that anyone is actually into this. The game doesnt need remade. It is pretty much a given that it won't top the original in gameplay or feel. Maybe for young kids who unfortunately didnt get to experience the original but not for anyone old enough to know better.

It better not be some spam X QTE-filled bullshit like final fantasys recent iterations.
You mean like the spam Cait Sith of the original FF7? Or spamming limits like FF8? Or spamming Joker doom in FF6? Or trio of 9999 and gems in FFX? Or Cat nip trigger happy in X-2?
A lot of the earlier FFs are even simpler than that with only one real strat and if you don't use them you are just intentionally gimping yourself. For all the shit that FF13 gets it actually does have a combat system which isn't spam A to win and have a lot of depth under the surface. The issue with most FF games is if they use the traditional combat system then there will always be a go to strat which is strictly better in all circumstances.
Abusing OP items / strategies has nothing to do with gameplay mechanics. I wont get into an argument as to why i think the older gameplay is fundamentally more interesting than recent titles.
Square Enix's upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake will feature "dramatic changes" to the game's combat system, director Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed.
While fans of the original's Active Time Battle system will likely be disappointed by this news, they can rest assured the sweeping changes won't render the remake completely unrecognizable.
"We’re not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that," Nomura told Official PlayStation Magazine (via GamesRadar). "We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it’s still recognizable."
Nomura also mentioned the FFVII companion movie he directed back in 2005, noting that Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children will serve as a source of inspiration when designing the game's visuals. That said, they "don’t intend on utilizing the 3D models of Advent Children as is because, well, it’s a different technology, and it’s actually been almost ten years since Advent Children was first released."

JRPGs are extremely difficult to balance. The closest I've seen is FF9 which remains fairly balanced until you get access to Charge! which then takes over as the go to tactic in all scenarios. I love JRPGs to death but even I accept they have slight issues with one tactic always being the best solution (Typically those abusing low hp strats) thus having pretty little depth. At least FF13 changed this up with the paradigm system which actually had a nice little depth to it so you couldn't just spam the same thing over and over again.
Personally i'm happy that the combat system gets a revamp as it keeps things fresh as if I want to play the ATB version then I can simply just play the ATB version as there is zero reason to actually play the new game without combat changes.

Hahaha, while I liked the Battle System in FF13, when I got bored I just pressed the computer do the moves button. And while there is no OP button, there is still the overleveling thing. Which you had to do in almost every FF game to get to the OP stuff. I like it more tactical then action oriented, so I would prefer a 7 system over 13. But I always liked that they changed the systems for each game. And I have yet to see a rpg which doesn't have a go to strategy. The good thing is people that play rpgs usually don't care.

To be fair the fact that you can overlevel in a JRPG is kind of an issue in itself. At least 13 limits you in how far you can be over leveled (No max sphere grid in besaid etc etc). But to my knowledge not a single FF requires grinding or levels to reach the OP stuff (If they did they wouldn't really be worth using / be OP).
Trio is obtained as you enter Bevelle / Calm Lands. Cait Sith's limit is 40 enemies killed Cat nip is at the start of chapter 2 Limits are just built into FF8 and the stuff that makes them much stronger are obtained via Triple Triad in disc 1 FF9 uses an equipment system and even them Limit glove exists which is obtained after Lindblum 1
Half the fun is discovering and using op shit. FF13 was boring because each attack/spell did only a pixel's worth of damage and multiple enemies increased the battle duration exponentially. Sometimes I just want to one-shot a mob with an aoe spell/summon and feel powerful (like the first time I got the Choco/Mog materia)

How is over leveling actually a problem? If some whacko wants to grind to max level in the first area of the game I think they should be allowed to do so. It's a single player game so having as many ways to play the game as possible is only a positive thing really. Some guy spending countless hours over leveling has no effect on how I enjoy the game. If that's how they want to play... Go for it.
If you don't like op shit don't use it. Play the game to have fun and not to beat it the most efficient way possible with the most op way possible unless you like that sort of thing. Hell I never ever used Cait Sith in FF7 because I hated him and would have joyfully murdered him after his little story line ended if I had been given that choice. I didn't use mime Knights of the round nonsense because that was boring as hell.
I go out of my way not to play games that make me bored . I actually found ff13s combat system pretty boring. Just didn't do it for me. A matter of taste.
Yeah, we talk about all that OP stuff but it's not like you'll discover it in your first playthrough I think. Well when I got FF9 on my PSX I leveled a lot and then I got stuck in the big invisible city, getting ganked by lvl99 greater marlboros everywhere I set foot xD Bought it day 1 but never finished it before I played it on PC on emulator :D
My favorite system is still FF10, sphere grid that you can customize end game, with bosses to match the power curve (that drop those grid customizing items) I also loved the FF9 system, but there was no content to match your power sadly.
I hope they'll add a lot of superbosses at least in the FF7 remake, and change the leveling system to keep it fresh and new.
I'm not going to grind 15840 gil in the train graveyard so I can buy 99 iron bangles lol. Maybe just enough for 9, but even then that takes forever. Probably unlock Cloud's level 3 limit breaks by then.

I don't really have an issue with leveling systems as long as grinding is never required (Looking at you DQ metal slime grinding). I just find it a little silly when you have the entire combat system available so early on.
As far as self limiting I've discussed this a bunch but it basically comes down to if the combat system requires you not to spam something then the game becomes much slower / monotonous in comparison because you are intentionally gimping yourself and once combat stops being enjoyable then you have to ask yourself - why are you playing the game rather than watching the cutscenes on youtube. Combat should be challenging with many options at all points which is why I have such a love for FF9 given it gave me that for the most part (I'm aware of disc's 4 having issues)
I admit my view on combat is slightly warped after speedrunning a few Final fantasies and other JRPGs so it might not reflect how a normal person views a combat system but I still think having options in combat is actually important. Also I agree with Mrcon having a few super bosses with the new combat system would be pretty fun (Although I can see a DLC arena happening like what happened with 13-2)
