hey friends it's catplanet with a very serious spoopy blog
basically i'm planning on joining my school's radio station when i get back in the fall. gonna play all the 80s synth + new wave goodies a little apprehensive but mostly excited!
so i just want to hear about your experiences with amateur radio, and any tips you might have. i'm sure the club officers or whatever will explain everything, but any advice would be much appreciated. ex. how much should i talk? between every track?
also if you have artist/song suggestions lemme know! i like stuff like a-ha, alphaville, omd, 80s depeche mode (construction time again thru music for the masses for the most part), tears for fears, some duran duran, ultravox, all the one hit wonders etc etc etc
You have to start your program with the obligatory Kraftwerk. The Twin Cities has a college station called Radio K which last I checked was only on AM, and didn't have the power to reach huge audience in terms of coverage.
When I was in school though, it was purely the bastion of students who were convinced of the sainthood of Morrissey after The Smiths, and the students that basically the band and supporters of the fair trade mandolin string industry would attend. No idea what it is like now, the whole idea of underground or independent music has been turned on its head since.
You could also do The Faint, which while isn't 80s explicitly, there are dance, 80s electronic influences.
I had a radio show years back, and the first thing you will need to do is find out what you are required to play on air, e.g., a short audio clip with the name of the radio station, and when you need to play it. I used to go on the air at scheduled intervals between those required audiobits. I did not have much flexibility in when I would talk versus when I would be playing music, or other things like public service announcements (public station).
Also, you said you are 'planning' to join the station... do you know for sure that you will get a time-slot for a show, and that you will have flexibility over what you play during your slot?
When you are talking on air, what will you talk about? As for whether you should verbally introduce every song or not, that's between you and the station management, but to be honest it's a pain in the ass going on the air between every song so I'd suggest trying to avoid that.

ah yes kraftwerk. must it be the robotos in particular? i will maybe play something from computer world.
i only recently started listening to the smiths. i would hate to get caught up in the all the various morrissey debates
i haven't really enjoyed most of the stuff with 80s influences because most of it just sounds like "wao we put analog synth sound for hipster dance musik ololo" but i'll check those guys out. i did like this song, i dunno if it's even that 80s influenced but it sorta had that vibe in some of it

i'm pretty sure i'll get a timeslot, the station has apparently been declining in popularity so the schedule isn't full. went to the interest meeting last year and it looks like they let you play whatever
dunno what i'd talk about besides the music. maybe if i have a dumb story or something. i should think about this a little more
