I don't think Maru is better than Life (especially given that Life won the series in the end, which is a rather objective measure), hence my statement. I wouldn't go as far as to rank Terrans above one another. You might want to consider that everything I said in the first place was strictly my own opinions. I said I think Maru played above his level, to which the reply was "No lol he didn't". My statement was an opinion, but the reply was hardly a masterclass in rhetoric I didn't really need to use logic. If we are talking "objective" then Maru played as he played, right? Was there some outside force controlling Maru's actions during this entire series...nay the entire tournament? No. There wasn't. He played at the level he's been capable of playing at for a long time and a level he has achieved many times. You just aren't as educated on the specific player is more likely than some outside force making Maru play at some inconceivable level to the player he actually is as you are apparently suggesting.

It implies that the player in question played at a level that s/he can not or will not sustain and is above what the player can typically reach. I don't know what argument you're making, but I think Maru is currently riding a tide that will subside much sooner than Life's. Huh. You really think so? Like, I'm not arguing with you, but Maru looked absolutely amazing for most of 2014, IMO. I expected him to slump for a bit longer than he has because of burnout or wrists, but like... I think he's played basically at or maybe *slightly* below this level for most of the last year. His results didn't look world-destroying on paper, and yes, he did disappoint on a number of occasions. but at the same time he was often brought up in discussions of "best terran in the world right now". Also, this is a totally subjective assessment on my part, but I also think he has another "level up" in him. Not trying to be argumentative, you may be right and I may be wrong, but I'm surprised by this assessment.

The problem is that you overvalue life and therefore think that maru played better than he usually does. Pretty much all there is to it tbh.

You can never know how long one of his streaks will last, and some times they will even be cut short mid-tournament. This time, he for the most part kept it together for an entire tournament. That, mostly, is what I think he can't pull off with any great frequency. Yeah, agreed, consistency has been an issue for him. I guess at least when Life wasn't doing his best, it was consistently so. I think a good part of Maru's issue is that he's used to winning largely on superior micro. This comes up against Parting in particular because Parting's a player you can't beat on superior micro, even if you're Maru. It reminds me a bit of younger chess players who rely on tactical play: when your opponent is good, they understand tactical play also and you won't win unless tactics are in the service of superior overall strategic and positional play. I think this is where Maru can still improve in a way that shows against Parting especially. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how he does in GSL/NSSL this season. Maybe he has it in him at the moment, maybe not.

While I agree with the sentiment, I'll pop in to say that his set vs PartinG is a fairly meh example - PartinG's a player who has always had his number. A series such as vs Hack in GSL would fit better as an example, It hink.

Did anyone notice that Life rarely picks off buildings and goes for Drones instead? I think going for buildings like Baneling Nest or Spawning Pool would be better? I think a huge reason Life lost Game 2, 3, and 4 is because of the map pool though. Those maps are not good to awful for Zerg. Not TvP if I remember correctly? TvZ might be his best matchup, but he stayed in the GSL more than any other terran last year mostly because he could hack it in TvP when nobody else could...

We're still talking about someone who reached GSL playoffs 4 times in a row and ended up being #1 in 2014 Proleague if playoffs matches are factored in. Life was much more inconsistent in GSL/Korea (he was even briefly Code B) than Maru. The rest is clouded by unequal traveling opportunities.
