I love reading about people who I didn't know about, be they interesting because of quirkyness, dedication, invention, or otherwise. I will delete your post, so don't post in this blog unless you follow this format:
Name Links Summary of what makes them interesting
Cliff Young
http://www.my-inspirational-quotes.com/inspirational-stories/cliff-young-a-farmer-who-inspires-a-nation/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_Young_(athlete)
In 1983, the 61-year-old potato farmer won the first Westfield Sydney to Melbourne Ultra Marathon. Cliff arrived at the start line with overalls and gumboots
...
He finished the 875-kilometre race in 5 days, 15 hours and 4 minutes. Not knowing that he was supposed to sleep during the race, he said when running throughout the race, he imagined that he was chasing sheep and trying to outrun a storm.
When Cliff was awarded the first prize of $10,000, he said he did not know there was a prize and insisted that he had not entered for the money. He said, “There’re five other runners still out there doing it tougher than me,” and he gave them $2,000 each. He did not keep a single cent for himself.
...
It was said that Cliff Young never kept a single prize. People gave him watches, because he never had one. He would thank them because he did not want to hurt their feelings, but will then give it away to the first child he saw. He did not understand why he would need a watch because, he said, he knew when it was daylight, when it was dark, and when he was hungry.

I read about Cliff Young just a few weeks ago. So inspiring! It is also a lesson in conformity, because you will notice that all the top athletes at the time were copying each other, and they thought Cliff's strategy was ridiculous - everyone did. But now everyone runs it the way Cliff did.
How might we see the same sort of scenarios in science, philosophy, politics, etc? What are we over-looking?

Freeman Dyson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeman_Dyson Reading about him, or me trying to explain it really won't do it justice. I would strongly suggest getting his book 'Disturbing the Universe'. It is essentially an autobiography.

John Boyd.
I recommend reading a full biography, because the Wikipedia article only covers his theoretical work. He's considered the most influential military thinker since Sun Tzu and he was pretty much like a real life Maverick.
Because Boyd rarely met a general he couldn't offend, many senior officers today dismiss him as a man who had a flair for math, but who otherwise was an unprofessional officer unworthy of promotion and incapable of making any contribution to the military.
"The only good thing about the F-111," he said, "is that the dumbass Soviets believed our propaganda and built their very own piece of useless ****, the Backfire bomber."
