I'm gonna have to bow out this time. As much as I enjoy dusting off Crawl and proving that you don't have to be a good player to win, I actually have responsibilities that take more than 15 hours a week now

We're pretty deep into the tournament. It's definitely too late for you to join a team, but I believe you can still start up and see how you rank as an individual.

So just now an amazing thing happened. The first fully-unassisted* bot win in the history of DCSS:

1851235 qw the Executioner (level 27, 197/197 HPs)
             Began as a Gargoyle Berserker on Nov 22, 2013.
             Was a High Priest of Trog.
             Escaped with the Orb
             ... and 3 runes!
             
             The game lasted 00:45:16 (56797 turns).

*there was a bug that had to be manually fixed partway through; qw was inadvertently not checking for -Tele on weapons so it was wielding one.

qw has won once in about 160 attempts but I don't know how much it was being updated in that time. Probably 1% winrate is a high estimate though.

picked up game again. went gargoyle conjurer. game went FANTASTIC. book with all the big lvl 9 spells in d5 or so, artifact mace with rf++, high mr,blink evoke etc, artifact armor with tonsa stats,quaff id potion of mutation increases my wings for easy fly and gives clarity, BOOTS OF RUNNING(2nd i ever found) to top it all out. breezed through dungeon and lair till l:4 death yaks start. all fine can get them 1by1. till my FUCKING "s" key gets stuck while i channel that new beam spell and during a giant lagspike. result: my already endgame prepared caster with 28 ac ,fireball at like 10% in armor etc died to a single death yak without fighting back for no reason other then stupid key.

game is hard. -_-'

Currently in the midst of my best crawl run to date. Level 15 Gargoyle Earth Elementalist. Just cleared Orcs and Lair. Time to start going for runes.

Hey Bitter, try a Minotaur Fighter using polearms. Reach makes things a lot easier. Start with Okawaru. He'll give you stuff. Equip plate as soon as you find it. Switch to The Shining One later on when you're ready to take the end of the Vaults. Max your piety in the Crypt. From here on in, summon TSO's minions on anything that even seems tough. Use it very liberally, because you can always recharge piety at any time in the abyss, which should be effortlessly easy by the time you worship TSO. Use TSO's one time max piety ability to turn a demon trident into a Blessed Trishula and upgrade that to +9,+9. Even if you have terrible luck and find NOTHING... as long as you have a large shield, 40 AC, and TSO's minions, you can near effortlessly tab your way through zot to the orb and get out.

Whenever I'm feeling bad and want to just win, I play this character. It's about as easy as the game gets, so if you really want a win, give it a try. This character can tab through just about everything. Later on you can learn haste and tab through the extended endgame too.

Each death is a lesson to never underestimate the monster type you died to again. I can still remember specifically dying to black mamba in lair a long time ago. That's how you win eventually... climbing upon the corpses of all the characters you've splatted.
