Cologne is a very nice city and its close to Bonn and Düsseldorf. Bonn is a beautiful city where I studied for three years. If you can get a "work-ticket" for subway and bus from ESL you should take it. It allows you to take regional trains, subway and buses in North Rhine-Westphalia for free.

Otherwise I wish you good luck on your new job
