So I have been interested in Speed Running Pokemon and recently started running Pokemon Yellow. This is the very first game I ever tried speed running, and I have never thought I would Speed Run in my life.
But after watching Werster (who holds the WR) run Pokemon Speed runs, I decided to join in Pokemon as a series has been with me since my childhood and I remember my very first Pokemon Red game that I absolutely loved. I watched the show, desperately wanted Pokemon Cards, and Battled and Traded with friends using GameBoy link cables. It was all the rage when it came out and many many gamers, young and old, were entranced by this new game.
However, as I got older, I started to care more about stats. That Pikachu needs to have perfect DV. Why is my Mankey attack so low? Then as new generations were released, EV Training and natures were added further allowing for greater "customization" of stats. I couldn't play the games anymore for the pure enjoyment of the game. I just had to have that PERFECT pokemon. Then I discovered speed running. Only thing that is important is the stat of the very first pokemon, then you rush through the game! It was the perfect way for me to play the game! With speed as the goal, I wouldn't need to worry about having a full 6 party, with the very best moveset and perfect stats. I only needed one great pokemon! With that in mind, I dove headlong into this new style of gameplay.
After a couple days of experimental running and taking some Shitty Notes, I kind of got the gist down and started a great run
I was really excited about the time, since well I most likely would have ended the run sub 2:20 which is really good for my third actual run. Th World Record for Yellow is 2:02 and although behind I was quite proud of it Unfortunately RNG got the better there...
As much as luck seems to play, I have a lot of fun in these runs! The fact that luck controls whether I make time or lose time, makes it exciting every part of the way Although this seems counter intuitive, as luck is something that just isn't part of competitive play for most games, RNG combined with the relaxing nature of the game controls, gives a nice feeling of excitement while enjoying the game casually. I have fun in all these runs. And because it is such a non demanding game to play, I can ENJOY the game as it is. I love to listen to the music, chat with my viewers, and just have a good time. Although it can be frustrating when you play for a couple hours, then lose everything because of luck
So I am streaming right now, aiming for another attempt + Show Spoiler +
I was never a perfectionist in RPGs. I always finished D2 (normal) without redoing a boss for loot. Grinding just bores me as does getting the right nature or EVs. I think I got into the theorycraft but never into the grinding parts or competitive pokemon. I liked picking my team for the battle tower, and TL had a challenge a few years back where people were supposed to do pokemon runs together. It didn't work out but I did finish a Ruby run with 6 pokemon with base stats 350 or under. Many hours were spent looking up stats on bulbapedia.
Why did you pick Nidoking for the speed run? The poison ground typing can't be that great in Gen 1 considering no good poison moves existed and you got hit by a lot of super effective attacks. Was it for Nidoking's good special stat and attack and moveset though. Did you pick him for the versatility?
Pokemon is still a very relaxing game to play. I still play every game in the series eventually. Today in White I caught a Kyurem while grinding for the Elite 4. It's still nice to collect.
I would still play the game more if my friends did, but sadly we've all moved on to SC2 and LoL and DotA. I am not as carefree as I was when I was younger during Silver/Crystal so I can't continue playing and theorying out good teams to take into different stages of the battle subway.

nidoking was, in general, stupidly strong in yellow version. i legit got this bad boy to mid 50s and just walked over everything.
But seriously I messed up really bad there I forgot to teach Thunderbolt before Rock Tunnel I accidentally deleted Ice Beam I accidentally used X Speed on Bruno, thinking I had an extra one
But overall, I'm glad I finally finished a run! This was the first one that I was able to complete and with pretty good time!
Thank you for those who tuned in~
edit: and Yes Nidoking is used because of early Double Kick for Brock, Thrash at 23, Versatile moveset for rest of the game And of course godlike stats
Wait are you using the hack to get nidoran? You can either get a nidorino/a or Gengar?
Maybe it only works for Nidorina. I could swear there was another hack that worked before you got to Pewter. Also I'm not even sure if it'd be hard to get a nidoran that early or even worthwhile. Nidorina evolves with a moon stone I just learned.

You can get Nidoran in the bush before Viridian Forest in Yellow You can also get Nidoran in the bush on road to Victory Road in Viridian City in Red, Blue and Yellow.
This is a glitchless run, so I have to use the Nidoran Male to Speed run with it
