I much prefer this. TB's is pretty good too...so long as it doesn't go completely nuts like say, NASCAR or for the rest of the world, Football jerseys.

I don't know what football you are watching but in most of the world the only sponsors on a football shirt are: 1) The Football Association and league they play in, i.e UEFA, FIFA, FA on the right sleeve 2) The shirt maker logo 3) Their team logo 4) The main team sponsor across abdomin all in all, you rarely even notice them. The ads you see on screen around the pitch aren't intrusive either. Its not like racing where their car, shirt, helmet, gloves, eye balls, nutsack, butt crack and every other nanometer of space are filled with sponsors.

if you plan on doing this all by yourself then i will admit that is a helluva undertaking.

MLG is sponsored by NOS energy drinks and they are a direct competitor to EG's Monster Energy. This idea sounds amazing, but not without a few bumps. What happens at their events? Nothing. this has never been done because the majority of tournaments are not invites and so a designer simply cannot prepare for all the possible combinations of players, teams, sponsors. if you plan on doing this all by yourself then i will admit that is a helluva undertaking. Nah this isn't true, it's actually really easy at a live event. You have an entire production crew dedicated to this stuff and there aren't all that many teams. All you need to do is setup the templates for each team then change the name around in the overlay. I'm working with the Starboard folks to create a full-on program to do all of this and auto-populate all the sponsors into an overlay. That will make things even easier.

Still, the notion is still possible and might be well worth the compromise if we want to show more gratitude to our benefactors.

The idea really doesn't come across as particularly difficult to implement. It's a small, unobtrusive "virtual jersey", as you put it, that can just pop up somewhere on the overlay to show the sponsor.
