I think you should go to orders (o) and allow collecting of things from dead enemies (?)
Alternatively, d-b-c, select huge area, and you should be able to reclaim their stuff. [hopefully.]

I decided to play some DF again after I got my new shiny PC. The old one never managed to run maps larger than 4x4 smoothly, but with the new one I had 100fps in those maps, so I figured I play around with some bigger maps and see what happens. Turns out I get pretty nice fps even with maps as large as 8x8 (get like 50fps at embark still). But: With larger maps, I get lag-spikes every 10 seconds or so, the screen freezing for a second or longer before things continue, making the game quite unplayable. The fps never drops below 40, though. Is that a known issue, and if so, is there a way around it?
I'd really like to play on larger maps. :/

How can I make it so my dwarves pick up bolts that are on the ground?

I'm currently playing a 4x4 embark with 200 population cap, temperature turned on and weather turned on on a computer with an i5 2500K processor. Now in my 12th year and FPS is falling below 40FPS regularly for sustained periods. This is after many FPS boosting measures such as stopping all flowing water and magma, reducing clutter through atom smashing and closing off as many opened and mined out areas as possible.
Next game I play I'll be using a 3x3 embark with a 120 population cap. I'd strongly recommend people choose a smaller embark size. As soon as you start doing anything complicated/interesting on a large embark, your FPS plummets, even on a modern CPU. When you consider that maps are usually 100 levels deep at least, that gives you approximately 1.5 million squares to explore and utilise on a 3x3 embark. Should be enough to keep you busy for a while...

My FPS never dropped below 40, and yet the game stopped for 1-2 seconds at a time, which totally breaks the flow of the game. I suspect some kind of bug, but I have no idea yet what it is. :/
You're right, though, a lot of the fun, interesting things do kill FPS in general, even on faster machines. (Hello, ocean!)

In my current fortress I have an engraver, who ONLY carves pictures of people being killed by giants, and by other humanoids.
Its pretty morbid.

Had just made my first military squad and a Werebuffalo shows up! It managed to choke a duckling to death before my dwarves arrived, then it bit off some heads and limbs while my dwarves were punching it (punching, becaus I'm a noob and didn't have any weapons ready for them). It turned into a human and ran of the edge of the map after having killed two dwarves. Thought everything was okay but a month later half my military transformed into Werebuffalo's! Fun!
Going to make sure I have weapons ready this time haha!
This game is so deep.
Oh, and did I tell you about that one time I got 5 dwarven childs twice as the first migrant waves?

Yesterday 20 or so of my military dwarves generated alot of fun.
I had setup my melee squads with iron headwear, footwear etc., checked out the military tab and it showed the equipped icon. Great I say, lets kick those 10 goblins back to the hole they crawled out from...
This quickly resulted in flying limbs, punctured guts and maybe a lost head.
To avoid more fun, how do you get the dwarves to actually equip the goddamn armor?

Does anybody know if you can apply the masterwork mods to an existing save game?
Or do you need to start am new one for the changes to apply?

You have to tell your dwarfs to wear the armor instead of the clothing via the military menu.

49 dorf came to my fortress with 3rd migration wave, and 25 of them are children. i know a lot of people come with 3rd wave but is this much children normal?
|
I had a 51 dorf, 30 child wave come yesterday
|
One of the lastest releases (few versions back) had a problem with too many child immigrants, but that was supposedly fixed. I didn't have any more child problems since then... maybe its related to your home civilisation, since they affect your immigrants? If your civ is at war, you get mainly high-skilled military-dwarfs, if it is peace you get high-skilled workers. Maybe some conditions causes too many children?

I thought my fortress was doing good and all of a sudden my mason go crazy in the middle of the dining room. Before I figure out what to do he has killed 11 dwarves and then everyone else goes crazy. I finaly realized I was all out of booze, but it was too late to do anything.
This game is just... amazing!
