The dragon is awakening. Across the heavens, armies of angels prepare for battle. Throughout the abyss, demonic legions assemble for conflict. Soon, another war will rage across the planes. But in a place known as the Hearth, there lies dormant an ancient power which both sides wish to claim. The monumental struggle to control the Hearth is about to begin...
Welcome players, to Purgatory Mafia. The game of mafia pits players in teams against each other in a battle of wits, truth, deception, and manipulation. While the town seeks to identify and collectively eliminate the scum, the scum seek to mislead and destroy the town. Who will win in this grand struggle? The only way to find out is to play.
Game Rules:
- Play to win. Make your posts, and choose targets for your actions in order to help your team achieve its win condition. - Do not deliberately sabotage your team. Do not intentionally aim to be modkilled for any reason. - If you sign up to play in the game, you are making a commitment to play out the game, which may take up to a month or two to complete. If you know in advance that you will be away for certain periods of time, let the host know well in advance. If you are playing in this game, you may not begin playing in another game without the host's explicit permission. (If you believe you can handle an additional game, just go ahead and ask for permission.)
- Keep the discussion civil. Refrain from harsh personal attacks, and any sort of racist or sexist comments. - Refrain from discussing topics unrelated to the game in the game thread, once the game has begun. - Do not discuss any other ongoing mafia games in this game. Referencing games that have ended is fine. Do not discuss the events of this game outside of the game while the game is still in progress. - Do not make promises or bets that extend beyond the scope of the game.
- You may not sign up with more than one account to play in this game. - Only a single person may play with a single account in this game. - Do not try to gain information about the game in an unauthorized manner. This includes logging onto another person's account, or accessing someone's private files. Furthermore, do not attempt to gain access to out of thread communication channels that you have not been given explicit permission to access (e.g. the mafia quicktopic or IRC channel, if you are not a mafia player). - No smurfing. You must sign up and play with your main TL account.
- Once you die in the game, do not post in the thread. Do not continue to discuss the game in any way with players who are still alive. No goodbye posts. - Once the game has begun, if you are not playing in the game, do not post in the thread.
- You most post in the thread at least once every 24 hours. Your role may also include other activity requirements which you must follow. - You may not edit your posts. - You may not include (embed) images or videos in your posts. - Do not post anything that must be decoded or decrypted by a program (other than a web browser) in order to be understood. - Do not utilize a foreign language or code that only certain other players can understand, due to their background.
- Do not communicate with other players in the game outside of the thread, unless your role explicitly allows you to do so.
- This game follows the TL mafia ban list. If you break any of the rules, your punishment may extend beyond the scope of this game. In-game punishment may be deferred as the host sees fit in order to best preserve the competitiveness of the ongoing game.
- If you have a sudden, unexpected emergency and can no longer participate in the game, privately contact the host in order to be replaced. Do not continue to post in the thread after you have made this request. As a courtesy to the player who will replace you, do not discuss anything related to your desire to be replaced in the thread. Instead, the host will mention in the thread that you will need to be replaced. If you do not have a sudden, unexpected emergency, do not request to be replaced. You are expected to play out the game.

Game setup information:
This is a mafia game for 18 players. 3 players will be randomly selected as angels, and 3 players will be randomly selected as demons. The setup for this game is completely open. All roles and game mechanics are public information.
The town's win condition:
The town wins if at least one town player is alive, and all angels and demons have been eliminated. The angels' win condition:
The angels win if at least one angel is alive, and they make up at least half of the remaining players in the game. The demons' win condition:
The demons win if at least one demon is alive, all angels, the sage, and the demon hunter have been eliminated, and the living demons and corrupted players make up at least half of the remaining players in the game. Anti-kingmaker provision:
If it is no longer possible for the town to win, the remaining town players can achieve a (very) minor victory if all Angels are eliminated. Players will not be specifically informed when this provision comes into effect. Stalemate condition:
If just one demon and the Town Sage remain in the game, no one wins. (The Angels are the ultimate losers, though.) True Love exception:
If just the Angelic Observer and the Town Demon Hunter remain in the game, the Angels do NOT win. Instead, only these two players win.
Voting System:
This game utilizes the Instant Majority Lynch system. If at any point during the day over half the players alive are voting to lynch a particular player, that player will be instantly lynched, and the night will immediately begin.
Information Revealed Upon Death:
Usually when a player dies in the game, the player's alignment and role will be revealed. There are a few ways for a player to die without revealing any information, however.
Game timing:
If there are 15 or more players alive at the start of the day, the day will last at most 72 hours. If there are 14 or fewer players alive at the start of the day, the day will last at most 48 hours. Nights will last 24 hours plus the minimal amount of time necessary to allow it to end at 8PM EST. Day deadlines are always at 8PM EST as well.
Role List:
Town Vanilla (x8)
You have no special talents to bring to bear in the war against angels and demons, but you still vow to keep your town safe. You win with the town.
Town Demon Hunter (x1)
You are the latest descendent in a line of legendary demon hunters, who wield their dark powers against them. Each night, you may target a player other than yourself to attack. If your target is not an angel, he or she will be killed. You win with the town.
Town Sage (x1)
Your study of the powers of light has enabled you to sense and counter demonic power. Each night, you may target a player to illuminate. You will receive "Demon" or "Not Demon" as a result, and your target will also be cleansed of corruption. You are immune to corruption. You win with the town.
Town Channeler (x1)
Your study of the dark powers has enabled you to move people and objects across the planes. Each night, you may target a player other than yourself to banish. That player will be sent to purgatory for the night. You may not target the same player three nights in a row. You win with the town.
Town Seer (x1)
Your study of auras has enabled you to use dark powers to differentiate the pure from the sinful. Each night, you may target a player to read. You will receive "Angel" or "Not Angel" as a result. You win with the town.
Angel of Death (x1)
You are one of the strongest warriors from heaven, and are usually in the front lines of battle, but this mission is so important that you were moved from your regular duties to ensure its success. Every night, you may target a player to slay. That player will be utterly destroyed, and only you will find out what role and alignment the player had. You win with the angels. You may communicate outside of the thread with your angelic teammates, who are:
Angelic Acolyte (x1)
You are still in training to be angelic warrior, so you take great care in everything you do. But should the need arise, you are ready to do what you must. Every night, you may target a player to stalk. When you do so, choose one of: demon, corrupted town, or town with dark powers. If your target matches your choice, that player will be killed. If the Angel of Death has been eliminated, you may (instead of stalking,) target a player to slay. That player will be killed. You win with the angels. You may communicate outside of the thread with your angelic teammates, who are:
Angelic Observer (x1)
Your combat ability is quite lacking when compared to most angels, so normally, you provide support to those who are stronger. Every night, you may target a player to observe. You will learn what actions were performed on your target, but not who performed them. If you are the last remaining angel, you may (instead of observing,) target a player to slay. If the target is town and not the demon hunter, that player will be killed. You win with the angels. You may communicate outside of the thread with your angelic teammates, who are:
Demonic Courier (x1)
Your specialized control of dark powers allows you to move people and objects across the planes. Every night, you may target a player other than yourself to transport. That player will be sent to purgatory for the night. You may not target the same player three nights in a row. On even numbered nights, the demon team may also target a player to corrupt, and choose one of its members to perform this action. If the target is town, that player will be corrupted and your team will control his or her vote. You win with the demons. You may communicate outside of the thread with your demonic teammates, who are:
Demonic Twister (x1)
Your specialized control of dark powers allows you distort the powers of the light. During the night, you may target a player to twist. Any attempts to illuminate, slay, stalk, or observe that player will fail. On even numbered nights, the demon team may also target a player to corrupt, and choose one of its members to perform this action. If the target is town, that player will be corrupted and your team will control his or her vote. You win with the demons. You may communicate outside of the thread with your demonic teammates, who are:
Demonic Concealer (x1)
Your specialized control of dark powers allows you to hide information from others. Once per game, during any day but the first, you may choose to conceal the lynch. When you conceal the lynch, the role and alignment of the player lynched that day will not be revealed publicly, but instead will only be revealed to you. On even numbered nights, the demon team may also target a player to corrupt, and choose one of its members to perform this action. If the target is town, that player will be corrupted and your team will control his or her vote. You win with the demons. You may communicate outside of the thread with your demonic teammates, who are:
Corruption:
A town player who has been corrupted has their status changed in this manner:
Corrupted
The level of demonic corruption in you has reached the point where a demon has taken control of your vote. However, your mind is still your own, and you will do everything you can to make sure that the town prevails. The corruption has left you with the peculiar ability to sense the darkness. Every night, in addition to any other abilities you have, you may target a player to sense. If your target is a demon, uses dark powers, or is corrupted, you will receive "Dark" as a result. Otherwise, you will receive "Not Dark".
Purgatory:
A strange place between the planes, where beings are locked into a state of near-frozen time. A player sent to purgatory cannot perform night actions, and cannot be the target of night actions. A player will return from purgatory after the night is over.
Order of night action resolution:
The Transport and Banish actions are resolved simultaneously before all other actions, and can consequently cause the other actions to fail.
All other actions except corruption and the cleansing aspect of the illuminate action are then resolved.
The corruption action is then resolved (even if the demon who is performing the action was killed the same night.)
Finally, the cleansing aspect of the illuminate action is resolved (even if the sage was killed the same night.)
A complete list of all possible notifications generated by actions:
It will be publicly revealed which players were sent to purgatory for the night:
(Player list) disappeared into purgatory during the night!
When a player has been corrupted, the player and the demon that performed the corruption will be informed:
You have been corrupted! You have corrupted (Player)! You now control his/her vote.
When a player has been freed from corruption, that player (and no one else) will be notified:
You have been freed from corruption!
If a demon with control of a player's vote dies and there is at least one other demon remaining, one of the other demons will gain control, and be informed:
The control of (Player)'s corruption has passed over to you. You now control his/her vote.
A player using the read, sense, observe, or illuminate actions will be notified with a result, or the failure to get a result:
The result of your investigation last night was: (Result)
The Angel of Death's slay action will provide a private flip:
The player you have slain was (a/the) (Team) (Role name).
The Demonic Concealer's conceal action will provide a private flip:
The player who was lynched was (a/the) (Team) (Role name).

Both voting and day/night actions are done by submitting PMs to ZBot. All PMs sent to ZBot related to this game must include the word "Purgatory" (no quotation marks needed) in the PM title. Capitalization never matters. Bolding is never necessary.
How to vote:
All voting in this game is performed via PM. Players are of course allowed to post whatever they wish in the thread, but only votes cast via PM will be counted.
In order to vote, send a PM to ZBot with ##Vote Zona or ##Vote: Zona in the body of the PM to vote. You may vote for a different player with your vote already in place. In this case, your previous vote will automatically be rescinded for you. However, if you wish to rescind your vote without voting for another player, follow the same directions as voting, except include ##Unvote: Zona or ##Unvote Zona in the body of your PM.
If you have the ability to control another player's vote (in this example, suppose you control the vote of a player named "Ex"), you may force that player to vote for someone by sending a PM to ZBot, with ##FVote: Ex: Zona in the body of the PM. You may change the vote to a different player by following the same directions. If you wish to rescind that player's vote without voting for another player, include ##FUnvote: Ex: Zona in the body of your PM.
ZBot will reply and acknowledge any valid votes, unvotes, forced votes, and forced unvotes within 5 minutes of their submission.
How to submit hidden actions:
In order to submit a night action requiring a target, send a PM to ZBot with ##(Action): (Target) in the body of the PM. The various action words are bolded in the role descriptions. For example, if the Angel of Death wanted to use the slay action on Zona, that player would include ##Slay: Zona. If you do not wish to use a night action that you possess, you must submit to ZBot ##Don't (Action). The last valid action PM sent to ZBot each night will be used.
In order for the Demonic Concealer to use the conceal day action, submit to ZBot a PM with ##Conceal. If you do not wish to use your conceal day action during a particular day, submit ##Don't Conceal. The last valid PM sent to ZBot before the lynch occurs will be used. Remember that the lynch occurs instantly once a player has a majority of votes.
In order for the Angelic Acolyte to use the stalk night action, submit to ZBot a PM with ##Stalk: (Target): (Type), where Type is Dark, Corrupted, or Demon. For example, if the Angelic Acolyte believed that Zona was a townie with dark powers, that player would submit ##Stalk: Zona: Dark.
If you wish to perform multiple actions in the same night (e.g. corrupted town power role, or demon using the corrupt action as well as another), submit all the actions you want to perform in the same PM.
You may change your mind as many times as you like during the night (or day). Any valid action PM submission will override previous PM submissions. You MUST submit a valid action PM every night cycle in which you are allowed to perform night actions. (The conceal day action is exempt.) This is an activity requirement.
If more than one demon submits a Corrupt action that is not nullified by a later Don't Corrupt action from the same player, the Corrupt action that was sent latest among all demon team members will be used.
ZBot will reply and acknowledge any valid action submissions within 5 minutes of their submission.
Role PMs:
The body of the Role PMs that will be distributed will follow one of two formats:
You are (a/the) Town (Role Name). Good luck! or
You are the (Angel/Demon) (Role Name). Your team consists of: (Player list). A quicktopic has been provided for you here: (url) You may also use any other means of communication to communicate with your teammates, if you wish. Good luck!
Signing up:
If you wish to play in this game, post in the thread ##Signup. If you change your mind and do not wish to play in the game, edit to remove your signup post. (Game rules do not apply until the game has begun when roles are distributed.) The host will not necessarily accept players on a first come, first serve basis.
Question answering policy:
The information provided in the game setup information and in your individual role descriptions has been deliberately written to be provide all the necessary information required to play the game. However, it is still possible, due to host error, that certain necessary information is missing or unclear. The host will respond to questions about the game in the following manner:
Before roles have been distributed, players should ask their questions about the game publicly in the thread. If any questions do involve legitimately unclear, or missing and necessary information, the question will be publicly answered in the thread.
Once the game begins (roles have been distributed), players should ask their questions about the game via PM. If any questions do involve legitimately unclear, or missing and necessary public information, the question will be publicly answered in the thread without identifying the person asking the question (the question may possibly be paraphrased). If any questions do involve legitimately unclear, or missing and necessary private information, the question will be privately answered by PM.
In addition, all requests for replacement, concerns about rule violations or inactivity, and questions about possible ZBot errors should be submitted to the host via PM. The host will consider all in-thread posts as in-game posturing and will not acknowledge, respond, or react to any posts made in the thread. If ZBot ever publicly displays erroneous information, the host will make an announcement clarifying any errors once they are discovered.
Note: Please carefully read and consider all elements of the game setup before playing. If you do not understand the game, you may begin pursuing strategies which are not beneficial to your team!
There is an observer's QT available. PM for access when the game begins. However, if it is possible that the user requesting access might be an alternate account, I will be forced to deny the request, in order to avoid the chance that a player in the game might access this observer QT.

Questions and Answers:
The abilities available to the Angels and Demons are quite different. Is this game balanced?
It does seem the Angels have the most straightforward goal and tools, doesn't it? I don't want to give away anything about how to play the game, so I'll just say this: If this was a closed setup, I would indeed consider it imbalanced. But this is an open setup, where the goals and abilities of every faction are known to all the players in the game, allowing the players to formulate the appropriate strategy in response.
What happens to corrupted town when all demons have been eliminated?
If there are no demons remaining, there won't be anyone around to control a corrupted townie's vote. Everything else remains the same.
Do corrupted town count towards the town's win condition?
A corrupted townie counts as a townie with regards to the Town's win condition.
Are players notified if a team is eliminated (even if no one has achieved their win condition?)
There will not be an announcement solely because a team is eliminated.
Are there any differences between transportation and banishment to purgatory?
Transportation and banishment to purgatory are functionally identical. When players are publicly informed who spent their time in purgatory during the night, nothing will differentiate the two.
Does this setup favor any faction in particular?
This game is designed to give each team a fair chance to win if they pursue the correct strategies.
To what extent would you have to adjust conventional play to deal with there being 3 teams? (Do normal scum hunting methods still apply?)
A mafia game with 3 or more factions plays out quite differently than the standard 2 faction game, and this game in particular is also different in its own way. However, normal scum hunting methods certainly do apply.
Can teams win together?
Factions cannot win together. It is not possible for two or more factions to achieve their win conditions simultaneously.
Do you need to send a PM every night? Even the nights you don't want to use conceal? Or is it only if you have already PM'd in a conceal and then change your mind that you need to ##Don't Conceal?
Yes. Anyone who can perform a night action MUST submit a PM every night cycle in which they can perform a night action. This is an activity requirement. I expect players to pay close enough attention to the game to never unintentionally miss an opportunity to perform night actions. (The conceal day action is exempt because days can end prematurely with an instant lynch.)
Does the Town Sage knows if he cleansed someone from corruption? As in, if he targets a player and he was corrupted, does he know that?
No.
Once there's no Angel of Death, are your kills "masked" like the Angel of Death's kills are? Or do people see the alignment and role of the people you kill? Same question about the Angelic Observer as the last existing angel.
Only the Angel of Death hides the role and alignment of those that are slain.
Can a corrupted town power role use both the sense action and whatever action this player originally had the same night?
Yes.
If someone is hammered, how long will it take for ZBot to post the lynch post?
ZBot checks its PMs every 5 or 6 minutes, and once someone reaches majority by vote, the next check by ZBot will produce the end of day post.
What notifications are produced when the demons try to corrupt an angel or the sage?
Nobody receives any notice. The complete list of all possible notifications generated by actions is in the OPs.
Does the fact that the transport and banish actions are resolved simultaneously before all other actions mean that they cannot be prevented?
No matter what combination of targets the town channeler and demonic courier choose, their targets will be sent to purgatory. Nothing can prevent either of the two from performing their actions successfully.
Is anyone notified when the demon hunter targets an angel?
No. All possible notifications are listed in the OPs.
Votes are counted in the order they are received, correct?
Yes.
Will Zbot count votes received during the same refresh cycle after majority has been reached?
Once majority has been reached, voting is over and all subsequent votes are ignored.
How does zbot handle mutiple votes for the same target sent in the same refresh cycle? If for instance someone named "Player A" sent a vote at 10:07 and "Player B" sent a vote at 10:09 for the same person which would appear first?
The list of votes (and unvotes) on the same target are in the order that ZBot received them, even in the same refresh cycle.
Suppose "Player A" voted on Zona at 10:07, and "Player B" voted on Zona at 10:09, and ZBot refreshed at 10:05 and 10:10.
10:05 would show no votes
10:10 would show Zona (2): Player A, Player B
I have in the past, tried to determine for myself whether or not TL consistently lists pms sent during the same minute in the order that they were sent and vaguely remember an incident in which TL did not, but even if I am remembering correctly, this rarely happens.
If the angel of death and the demon hunter target the same player and the player is not protected how would the player flip?
If the Angel of Death successfully slays a player (no matter what other actions occur), that player's role and alignment will be hidden from the public.
Can a corrupted town player ever cast a vote?
A corrupted town player starts the day able to vote normally, but whoever controls his/her vote can change the vote at any time (or can cast the vote if the corrupted player hasn't voted yet), and once that happens, the corrupted town player cannot change his/her "own" vote in any way.
When a corrupted town player dies, will the flip reveal that he/she was corrupted?
Corruption status is not revealed upon death.
Can the town channeller choose not to act, and can he choose to perform his action on himself?
Yes, the town channeler can choose not to act, and no, the channeler cannot target him/herself.
Can a player vote for themselves?
No, a player cannot voluntarily vote for him or herself. However, a player can be forced to vote for him or herself, if corrupted. This is something I should have included in the OPs - actually I thought I did, it must have gotten lost as I kept revising things.
If a player is Corrupted and Illuminated during the same night, does he know if he was corrupt?
A player corrupted and illuminated during the same night receives both respective notifications.

have you considered the implications of a mass claim?

##Signup Unless it starts before the first.

Just in case: ##Signup
redff: demons can hide one lynch flip, angels have one NK role that does the same and town has only 4 power roles
|
I should be in already, but just to make sure : ##Signup
Interesting setup IMHO. At first it seems imalanced in favor of angels( cuz of the NK and demon killer), but corrupt ability is very strong too....

##Signup
Very interesting setup...
The 8.00 pm EST is New york time?
|
##Signup it seems to me that claiming is basically asking to die i am also wondering whether or not corrupted townies should claim
|
I guess I should mention that 9 of the invited players have claimed their spots in this game, so there are only 9 spots available to general signups.
