“Esports changed my life.”
The news of Backho’s retirement felt so sudden for the fans. However, Backho thought the news was a little late, because it’s been a long time since he made up his mind to retire. He felt very sorry towards his fans because he thought he was torturing them with “false hope”, so when he announced his retirement on his mini-homepage after Hwaseung’s last game he had a sense of relief on his face.
He had no regret in his announcement because he had a concrete plan to go to theological seminary and become a pastor post-retirement. But regret came roaring back when he read the replies on the retirement news and the words left on his mini homepage. He realized that there were so many fans who remembered him and cheered for him, and he felt a great sorrow. His steps were heavy with the thoughts of “I could’ve done better” and of feeling sorry towards his fans. With the look of both satisfaction and sadness on his face, he waves good-bye to esports. Let us now delve into Backho’s simple story of how esports profoundly changed his life.
-The *guest* that visited one day-
In one moment Backho made up his mind to be a pastor. He attended church ever since he was in his mother’s womb, but he couldn’t go to church as a progamer and that always left him with grief. After being diagnosed with spinal disc herniation, he had no choice but to think about retirement. He thought about the future when the thought “I want to be a pastor” suddenly came.
“Nobody told me anything. When I couldn’t play due to my spinal injury I had to my future. In the midst of many worries the thought ‘I need to be a pastor’ suddenly popped up in my head. I was fascinated because the thought came out of nowhere. In thinking about living a life preaching the Gospel, I thought then that I needed to pray.”
After that Backho got permission from the head coach and began to go to morning service. He prayed about what he should do and made up his mind. If he couldn’t play well due to his injury anyway, he set his mind on becoming a pastor.
“I don’t have a detailed plan about what kind of pastor I will become or how to study. I only know that after the military I will enter a theological seminary. I’ll think about the rest step by step.”
-Esports changed everything in a short period of time-
In life, 6 years can be short, or long. With the average lifespan increase to 80 years, 6 years is not long. However, those 6 years that Backho spent as a Hwaseng Progamer was an event of life-changing proportions.
“The decision to become a pastor came while I was a progamer. I saw and felt a lot of things. I really feel it changed my life.”
The people who influenced him most are obviously his teammates. Living in one group for six years, he shared a friendship that he can’t gain anywhere else. For Backho, Jaedong, Lomo, Anytime, ggaemo, Young, etc. are both his greatest friends and gifts.
“After I announced my retirement on my mini homepage, I was hurt that I won’t be able to be with them anymore. I have a lot of affection for them. I don’t know if I’ll be able to meet better friends than these the rest of my life.”
Backho smiled, saying that, “I won’t be able to forget esports because it showed me where I should go in life and gave me friends I could be with for life.”
-“I want to be O blood type.”-
Backho did not gain just a dream and friends through esports. Living for 23 years Backho thought he was blood type O, but he found out he was A for the first time as a progamer.
“I found out I was blood type A early this year. To send a blood donor registration card to KT’s Violet, I took a blood test. I heard that O blood types are good at giving platelets, so I wanted to donate blood for platelet extraction but the nurse said, ‘You’re blood type A, and so you can’t do that. For 23 years I thought I was blood type O, but in one moment I became an A blood type.”
If not for the blood donation he would’ve thought he was blood type O to this day. The fascinating thing is he came out O in elementary school, middle school, high school. Even in the military physical, he came out as O blood type. But seeing his blood change to A blood type so suddenly, Backho found out that your blood type can change.
“You look like you don’t believe me but it’s true (laughs). Why would I lie about this? In the military physical I really came out as an O blood type. I think my blood type changed as a progamer. Esports can change your blood type (laughs). Can you say now that Esports changed my life a lot? (laughs)”
-Memories with teammates-
Throughout the interview, Backho praised one player until his mouth was dry. He is the Hwaseung Oz Ace Jaedong. Backho alleged that there can be no one who can keep up with Jaedong in mental toughness.
“There was a period when I thought, ‘Why can’t I play as well as Jaedong?’ When our team had a long break Jaedong still practiced a lot because he had to prepare for individual leagues. Honestly, a lot of other progamers and I would take some rests while practicing in that situation. But Jaedong didn’t do that. He practiced just like when he was practicing for a Proleague game and didn’t rest one bit. That’s really hard to do.”
One day, Backho was so curious he asked Jaedong, “How could you practice like that?” Expecting some grand, ambitious answer, Backho was so surprised when he heard Jaedong’s answer.
“Jaedong said one phrase, ‘It’s something I have to do.’ I realized then that Jaedong was born a progamer (laughs). If I have one regret as a progamer it’s that I didn’t live my progamer life as Jaedong did. Truly he’s a great player.”
After revealing that he planned to go on a trip with Jaedong, Lomo, ggaemo, Anytime, and Young, Backho said “I’m really looking forward to it,” and could not hide the anticipation.
-The one who changed the rules of Esports-
The event that Backho remembers the most is the event in which he changed the rules with his hands. In an OSL game against Firefist, he wrongly thought that Firefist GGed and typed GG first, giving birth to the “gg first” incident. After Backho, the rules were tightened, and gave birth to a number of “interesting” incidents afterwards.
“I remember both Leta typing ‘pp’ and Gorush accidentally typing ‘ㅎㅎ’ and forfeiting their games. Coincidentally, Gorush-hyung’s opponent that incident was me (laughs). It looks like I was a part of all the chatting incidents (laughs).”
Backho was overly talkative in saying, “Now that I think about it, I think I made esports more like a sport.” Backho felt joy in that he left something behind in Esports.
-I’m always sorry for my fans-
The time Backho remembers the most as a progamer is the time he spent with his fans. He regards the ‘Dream Pick’ event and the 1 night 2 day camp with the fans as his greatest memories. He will especially not forget the time when he dressed like a girl and danced in front of his fans.
“I’m both thankful and sorry for the fans who cheered for someone like me who hasn’t done anything. I will never forget the fans who loved me and cared for me anytime and anywhere.”
Backho smiled while declaring that he will catch all Hwaseung Oz games. Promising to pray and cheer for a Hwaseung Oz championship, he said one last greeting to his teammates.
“To my teammates and the coaching staff who always gave me advice, and to the fans who supported me, a player who was always lacking, Thank You. Even though I have retired as a player I will always be a part of esports so please create more memorable games that will attract even more fans. I love Esports!”
