Do you have a favorite progamer? Do you cheer wildly in your bedroom when Pusan rampages with his zealots? Do you giggle like a school girl when YellOw plays in proleague? (LastRomantic I'm looking at you!) Are you willing to stay up until 5am just to watch Sea crush the life out of another zerg? Then this is just the contest for you. We need an army of TL'ers to write.

TeamLiquid is looking for your enthusiasm and progaming knowledge to help support a future project. We need brief biographies written for the pro players that have entertained us over the years.
  • Entries shouldn't be too long, a couple hundred words or so are fine (obviously this varies depending on the player).
  • Entries should mention any achievements in leagues, play style, or foreign scene impact.
  • Any outside anecdotes are good to include (check out the 50 progaming incidents in the articles section for ideas).

+ Show Spoiler [Example entry] +

Elky aka Bertrand Grospellier

Nickname: The Desperate Terran

Bertrand Grospellier was a member of the AMD / Hexatron franchise, one of the few proteams to carry active foreign players in Brood War. He began his televised playing career in early 2002, and finished in mid 2004. He played terran for most of his career, and is considered the second most successful foreigner in Korea after Guillaume Patry.

Elky's biggest achievement in Korea was reaching the semi-finals of the SKY 2 OSL in the summer of 2002. In the semi-finals Elky battled the Emperor, Boxer, in a best-of-5. That series was marred by controversy as Boxer used the allied-mine trick, causing a regame. Elky fell in the semi-finals to Boxer, and then lost a disappointing set to Yellow for the 3rd place spot. Nevertheless, no other player since Elky has even qualified for individual play, and his reputation as a legend is intact.

Outside Korea, Elky proudly represented his country at four WCG final tournaments. In the inaugural WCG in 2001, he made the finals after beating GoRush. There he had to face Boxer for the second time in the tournament but was unable to emerge victorious.

Elky retired from competitive StarCraft in 2004 and now plays professional poker for a living.

I encourage you to pick your favorite gamer and tell us what you know. If there are repeat entries for the same player, the best one will be chosen by the staff. I suggest you use the Articles Section and the Search Function to find all the information you can.

Your reward? Your name will be prominently featured on the player's profile page. In addition, the top writers for this contest will receive a contributors star on TL.

There is a great number of players to write about. The popular ones will of course fill up quickly. If you are a fan of a more obscure player, support them by writing them up! Players with no bio's are lonely T.T

Good luck!

GARIMTO (Kim Dong Su)

Nicknames: N/A

First bursting on the pro-gaming when it was just only starting off, he impressed many with his Protoss vs. Zerg play, as well as his many uses of hiding buildings. Playing for Hanbitstars, winning two OGN Starleagues and being known as the protoss who has revolutionised modern P, he eventually retired, settling onto a life of commentating with OGN for Proleagues and game designing with a company. His last hurrah was during the Panasonic OSL, where, even though he was semi-retired, was able to put on an excellent last stand, especially against the Emperor, SlayerS_`BoxeR`.

GARIMTO won two major OnGameNet Starleagues in Freechal (defeating SKELTON, 3-0) and the Emperor himself in the SKY 2001 OSL, BoxeR (3-2), where the latter would go on to have a tough time in later OSL finals. Besides the OGN leagues, he would rarely appear in Teamleagues for Hanbit or KPGA Tournaments.

After his military service, he decided, it's time to show the world who was the best protoss. He quit his job as a commentator, and signed a lucrative contract with KTF MagicNs. He is listed on the roster as a player, but most view him now as more of a mentor and a coach. The TL.net community hope that he will be thrown for some games in the Proleague, to see how well he goes these days.

Where is everyone ~_~

Guess I will take the obvious

SlayerS_`BoxeR` (Lim Yo Hwan)

Nickname: The Emperor

The most popular Starcraft progamer ever to grace the e-Sports scene, Boxer was originally a Protoss player, but the lack of Terran players changed his mind to make a full-time switch to Terran. His first major win was the Hanbitsoft OSL, a great victory for the Terran race and Boxer himself, as there were no Terrans at all the previous OSL. His near-undefeated run through the whole starleague (with only one loss to Kingdom in the semi-finals) would start a new era of pro-gaming.

Participating in 6 OSL finals, winning 2, losing 4, 1 KPGA Championship and 2 WCG's under his belt, Boxer has been touted as one of the most sucessful progamers ever. He, along with GARIMTO and YellOw, have been said by many fans as the people who have revolutionized modern pro-gaming strategies, with such strategies as the Tank Drop and the Double Barrack Cheese. Memoriable moments have also came from these finals, such as EVER 2004, Game 4 vs iloveoov with the do-or-die marine/medic rush which forced the series to go to Game 5 and Coca-Cola, Game 4 vs YellOw on The Ragnarok where he bravely managed to avoid an offensive sunken attempt to defeat him, also to make the series go to a 5th game.

After his loss to Reach in the SKY 2002 OSL, his father disputed with the team he was currently in, IS (now Lecaf), and Boxer was forced to make his own pro-team, initially containing talents such as Sigamari (who is in Samsung), IntoTheRainbow and the monster Terran, iloveoov. This team, Orion, would go on to become SK Telecom T1.

Boxer, like any other major sport star, has been marred by many controversies through-out his career, the IS-Father dispute just one of them. He has been bitter enemies with Autumn, for the abuse on Game-Q forums between them. Unfortunately they have never played eachother in a major tournament. The Elky allied mines incident, as well as KBS interviews have been other incidents.

마재윤 Ma Jae Yoon
ID: sAviOr (formerly IPXZerg)
Race: Zerg
Team: CJ Entus
Nicknames: Maestro, JesusZerg, Matler
DOB: November 23, 1987
Notable Accomplishments: UZOO MSL Champion, LG CYON MSL Runner-up, Pringles 1 MSL Champion, Pringles 2 MSL Champion, Shinhan Bank Season 3 OSL Champion, GOM TV MSL Runner-up
Other: KeSPA Best of Player of 2006

Anyone who has even been in the same room with someone who follows the StarCraft professional scene in the past year has heard his name before. Easily one of the most dominant players in existence and the most accomplished Zerg player of all time, he is currently termed "bonjwa", the best, by other players.

sAviOr first garnered significant attention by battling his way through the UZOO MSL in 2005. However, as he soon discovered, most of this attention was extremely antagonistic after he beat the perennial favorite Reach 3-1 in the finals. A spot in the OSL repeatedly eluded him, but in the meantime, he made it to the MSL finals three more times, winning two of them. His infamy continued to climb as he downed S-class progamers one after the other. Although he was slowly gaining fans, many still felt that he had much left to prove.

In the first Superfight commemorating BoxeR's expected hiatus from the progaming, sAviOr unexpectedly destroyed the Emperor 3-0. By this time, people were forced to acknowledge sAviOr's dominance. He also qualified for the subsequent Shinhan 3 OSL, and to give you a rough idea of his skill level, he was quickly the favorite to win the entire OSL despite being a first-time contender. He fulfilled those predictions by convincingly defeating NaDa in the finals. His only crushing defeat to date came at the hands of the rising Protoss star Bisu in the GOM TV MSL finals losing 3 straight games. Sporting an inhuman win rate of over 70% for 2006, sAviOr was also named the KeSPA Best Player of 2006 and has stayed at #1 of the KeSPA rankings for over half a year. In recent months he has also played in far more televised matches than any other progamer. Statistically his best match-up is ZvP followed by ZvT.

His gameplay can generally be characterized as macro based. His trademark build is 3 hatch muta into lurk contain with mass expand into hive tech, something that he employed extensively to great effect when he was less well known. His skilled use of defilers is, in particular, unparalleled. Despite his relatively low APM, sAviOr is widely feared for his abilities to multitask, anticipate his opponent's moves, apply heavy pressure, counter attack, counter counter-attacks, and overall control the flow of the game, simply dominating his opponents. As other players started to dissect his style and the number of matches he played shot up, he has adapted his play to be more unpredictable, often preparing builds tailored specifically for certain maps and opponents.

When giving interviews, sAviOr is extremely straightforward and confident in contrast to the humility often expected from successful progamers. He has also stirred up controversy in several notable incidents, such as putting all the OGN members in his group during the Pringles 2 MSL selection ceremony, his "yawn rape" of JJu, and picking Terran against his former teammate GoRush. His matches against Nal_rA are characterized by fans as a "holy war" with Nal_rA as the pope and sAviOr as Hitler, a rather controversial comparison in the eyes of foreign fans.

sAviOr has been an extremely influential player, not only by reshaping the Zerg paradigm, but also ushering in a new era of supremacy by fresh young players. His future goals include leading CJ Entus to the Proleague championship and winning WCG.

looks like someone already did sAviOr, oh well

Nickname : The Neo Emperor
Other id's used : AdamaS, really[aLive], iOi[aLive]
Birthdate: 1986-09-25
Age: 20 as of 7/5/07

Casy is a member of OGN SparkyZ, formally known as KOR. He entered the proscene in 2003 and continues to play today. He is a very strong Terran user known for his brilliant micro and creativity,as to the point that he has been called the "Neo Emperor", a reincarnation of the legendary SlayerS_`BoxeR`. He shows many resemblances to BoxeR, as they both have a strong TvZ and a very weak TvP.

He has won 1 OSL, the 2006 Shinhan Season 1 OnGameNet Starleague(OSL), defeating ChOJJa(Z,KTF) in the finals at a score of 3-1. Other achievements include placing 4th in the 2005 Shinhan OSL, losing to iloveoov in the semifinals(3-2) and PuSan in the 3rd/4th place match(3-0). He has also placed 4th in the 2006 Shinhan Season 3 OSL, losing to NaDa in the semifinals(3-2) and IriS in the 3rd/4th place match(3-0).

[Oops]ClouD (Cha Jae Wook, 차재욱) Terran

Nickname: The Giant Killer

More known as the second Wook on OGN Sparkyz (the other being Casy, Han Dong Wook), Cloud has not had many individual accomplishments, but has had many teamleague accomplishments to his name (thus being dubbed the Giant Killer). Some of these include beating Nal_rA on his premiere map, Guilltoine and Chojja on Incubus 2004 in the deciding match of the SKY 2004 Round 3 Finals.

For individual accomplishments, he has not done much as of late, having only appeared in 3 OSL's (Shinhan 2005, Shinhan 2006 1 and Shinhan 2006 2), with his best performance being in Shinhan 2006 1, losing in the round of 16 to his fellow teammate Casy (who would go on to win it against Chojja). On the other side, he has not had much sucess in MBC leagues, most famously losing to IntoTheRainbow to a tank/zealot combo in the minor leagues.

DarkElf. The mere mention of his name strikes fear into the hearts of the mediocre. Who among us can forget his breakout 2 win streak from the first round losers game of the K-SWISS ODT on Christmas Eve 2005, defeating the ZvT monster Mumyung and the machine Hwasin (30% vs T at the time) securing a place in the second round?

But alas, what goes up must come down. His subsequent 0-2 loss was a crushing blow; truly this was his darkest hour. Not one to stay down for long, in April 2006 DarkElf managed a triumphant win against another giant of ZvT, none other than ZergMan himself (over 35% vs T). But perhaps, like Icarus, he flew too high, as this victory of victories was followed by a small, six game losing streak spanning the rest of the year. The ensuing hours were very dark, perhaps even darker than his previous darkest hour.

But all who speak the name DarkElf know that he is not so easily dismayed. In 2007 he has outdone himself: This year he has won more games than he has lost, bringing his overall record to a nearly-winning 50%. He has beaten the best at their worst, and he has lost to the worst at their most average. He knocked an out-of-form Anytime out of Survivor, before losing in the final match to a never-in-form Justin. He has racked up wins against Nada, Sea, and FireBatHero, and losses against TheZerg, Cool, and Tester. They say a strategist's most powerful weapon is unpredictability, and there is none more unpredictable than DarkElf.

Nal_rA - Kang Min
Nick name: Dreamer Toss, Flower Toss, Runny-nose Toss^^
Team: KTF

Nal_rA is loved and revered by fans and players around the world for his daring and unique play. Known as the dreamer toss, his strategies both baffle and outwit his opponents. His play has moments of brilliant micro and superb strategical sense. Along with Garimto, he is credited with much of the innovation that protoss players live by today.

His PvZ is one of the scariest matchups that has ever entered the proscene. He is one of the few players that can pull off the reaver/sair strategy effectively and uses it frequently. He also is known for building massive amounts of cannons earning him the nickname the flower toss. He forces his opposition to play safe with his massive amounts of cheese, but he has deadly straight-up play too that can decimate players when they least expect it.

His accomplisments include an OSL and a MSL, making him the only protoss ever to hold both championships in his grasp. He is also the runner up of both starleagues and has appeared in the MSL numerous times. He is one of the oldest protosses still in the scene and was a founder of the protoss race along with the other two kings, kingdom and reach.

Master of long, drawn out games, Nal_rA brought to us one of the greatest Starcraft BW moments of all time. It occured on Parellel lines against GoodFriend. He successfully pulled off a double-recall with hallucinated arbiters even when GoodFriend knew it was coming. Many a fans swear, it is easily the best game they have ever watched.

Clearly Nal_rA has shown and proven that he is and will remain among the greats of starcraft for all of time.

Hey this is just a suggestion for all you guys doing write ups. I think you should make sure you have all their achievements detailed out with the exact starleague name and the date. Also the more statistics the better. I'd try to keep opinions to a minimum unless they are mostly universally agreed on. But when I read these I'd like to be able to follow their careers chronologically with dates so I can see the progression of their career with highs and lows, and it just gives you a better overall understanding of the evolution of progaming and that player's role in it.

You can obviously write these any way you want but that's just my opinion after reading some of them.

Those will be taken care of. The writeups so far are exactly what are needed.

Legionnaire - Peter Neate - 피터 - Protoss

Nickname: Wink Toss

Only starting out as a humble foreigner who only came for WCG, he eventually stayed and became a progamer, pausing his degree on IT at University. Slowly starting out, he eventually was signed up by Pirates of Space (now MBCGame) along with Brian 'Assem' Fransciolli. He showed how he can be a weapon in Teamleagues, demolishing Toona SG 4-0 (with his victims Sirasoni, Ogogo, Goodfriend and Rock).

Eventually, Legionnaire transferred onto Hexatron with Assem again, to unite with other foreign progamers, Dan 'Rekrul' Schreiber, Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier and Guillaime 'Grrrr...' Patry.

Daniel Lee (manager of Hexatron, now eSTRO) used Legionnaire effectively in the teamleagues, downing players such as BoxeR on XenoSky, XellOs on Neo Forbidden Zone and ClouD on R-Point.

Eventually, after a controversial set of events which forced Legionnaire to forfeit his game against Yooi in the MBC Minor Leagues after beating Soo 2-1 in the preliminaries, he decided it was time to hang up the mouse and keyboard and go back to Australia and concentrate his studies.

Legionnaire was a fan with many Team Liquidians, oftenly posting his experiences in Progaming. His Korean Legion (pun intended) of fans came from his signature Wink after victory pose, as well as his super-reaver play, which if I believe, broke the record of kills (with 55).
