[Blizzard Cup Finals] MMA, “2011 the year which shall not be forgotten”

Prince SungWon Moon (SlayerS MMA), recipient of the trophy in his finals win at the 2011 GSL tour, has emerged as the “King of Kings.”

On December 17th, in the Daeyang Hall at Sejong University in Seoul, MMA of SlayerS struggled to defeat DongRaeGu of MVP 4:3 in the 2011 GSL Blizzard Cup.

Thus, MMA became the 2011 GSL Blizzard Cup winner, his second winning accomplishment in his GSL tour career, and is the recipient of the “Player of the Year” award.

In addition to his trophy, his win earned him 40 million won (~34.5 million U.S. dollars). Cumulatively, MMA has earned 126.2 million won (~109 thousand U.S. dollars) thus far in his GSL tour career. In addition, his overall career income topped over 100 million won, jumping his prize winning rankings from 7th place to 4th place.

He has nabbed the final winner’s trophy of 2011.

Although it’s been approximately ten minutes since finals ended, I still feel like my heart is still pounding. I feel so elated that I still can’t believe that I’ve won. I thought it would be an easy win because I was leading 3:0, but because it went on to full set of rounds, my teammates told me that they were anxious while watching me.

How did you feel when you were leading 3:0?

I was expecting the 3:0 lead because if I won the first set, I would feel prepared for the second and third set. I think I delved into danger when I chose a build I hadn’t perfected after contemplating what to do during the fourth set.

How did you feel when you were chased down to a 3:3 tie?

I felt extremely anxious and tight-knotted [laughs]. If I were a bit calmer during the sixth set, I probably would’ve been able to block his attack and won. However, my aggressive attacking instinct caused me to play a full set. After the sixth set, all of my teammates told me to calm down. With my regained composure, I was able to push forward with the match and secure my win.

Prior to finals, you told the media that you were going to use Lim Yo-Hwan’s build strategy.

BoxeR (Lim Yo-Hwan) suggested about 2~3 different types of builds. However, because the length of the tournament was relatively short, so I wasn’t able to apply them all. They’re such good builds; hopefully I’ll be able to demonstrate them in 2012.

You became the “King of Kings” of SC2 after also winning the GSL tour “Player of the Year” award.

I don’t believe I became the King of Kings of Starcraft 2 just because I won the Blizzard Cup. IM_MVP (Jung JongHyun) won three times, so I feel compelled to also win three times before I feel worthy for such a title.

You’ve earned over 100 million won cumulatively so far. How did you use your earnings thus far?

So far I’ve deposited all my winnings into savings. I try to dedicate allowance to my parents though. I’ll probably use the winnings from this competition in the same manner.

After the match, what did Team Manager Jessica tell you?

She asked me ‘Why do you always go for a full set and make a person anxious? You almost gave me a heart attack.” [Laughs].

You’ve pegged the win at GSTL, and you’ve also won today. If you have a secret recipe to your success, what is it?

I don’t have any specific trade secrets. I keep telling myself to be composed, and I rely on my team’s faith a lot. Before the match, my teammates came into my booth and told me a lot of advice. My team’s faith in me becomes a lot of help.

What will you remember 2011 to have been like?

It’ll be an unforgettable moment for my 20s. Even as I grow older, I won’t be able to receive this kind of love. I’m quite satisfied in my decision to play games.

What are your goals for 2012?

I’ll try to achieve high scores in next year’s GSL tour exhibition. I also hope that SlayerS wins in the new upcoming GSTL.

Any concluding last words?
In preparing for the finals, I was really tired and stressed out. Jessica and BoxeR were always by my side, and with their help I was able to win.

황태자 문성원(슬레이어스)이 2011년 GSL 투어 마지막 우승 트로피를 차지하면서 <스타크래프트 2> ‘왕중왕’에 등극했다.

17일 서울 광진구에 위치한 세종대학교 대양홀에서 열린 2011 GSL 블리자드컵 결승전에서 문성원은 동래구 박수호(MVP)를 4:3으로 힘겹게 물리쳤다.

이로써 문성원은 2011 GSL 블리자드컵 우승을 차지하면서 GSL 투어 통산 두 번째 우승에 성공했고, 2011 GSL 투어 어워드 ‘올해의 선수상’의 주인공이 됐다.

또한, 문성원은 우승 상금 4천만원을 획득하며 GSL 투어 누적 상금 1억 2천 620만원을 기록했고, 통산 6번째로 상금 1억원 돌파에 성공하면서 상금 랭킹도 7위에서 4위로 세 계단 뛰어올랐다.

2011년 마지막 우승 트로피를 차지했다.

결승전이 끝나고 10분 정도가 지난 것 같은데 아직도 심장이 터질 것만 같다. 승리했다는 사실이 믿기지 않을 정도로 기쁘다. 3:0으로 앞서서 쉽게 끝날 줄 알았는데 풀세트까지 가는 바람에 팀 동료들이 맘 졸이면서 봤다고 하더라.

3:0으로 앞설 때 기분이 어땠나?

첫 세트를 승리한다면 2, 3세트 준비를 잘했기 때문에 3:0이 될 것을 예상하고 있었다. 4세트 듀얼사이트에서 무엇을 할지 고민하다가 완벽하지 못한 빌드를 선택 했는데 거기에서 패하면서 위기에 몰린 것 같다.

3:3으로 추격 당했을 때는 어땠나?

심장이 너무 쫄깃했다(웃음). 6세트에서도 내가 조금만 침착했더라면 막고 이길 수 있었는데, 공격 본능 때문에 풀세트까지 간 것 같다. 6세트 끝나고 팀원들이 모두 들어와서 침착하라고 말해줬고, 안정적으로 경기를 풀어간 덕분에 승리를 차지할 수 있었다.

결승전 미디어데이에서 임요환의 빌드를 사용하겠다고 예고했었다.

(임)요환이 형이 2~3가지 정도의 빌드를 추천해주셨다. 그런데 대회 기간이 짧다 보니 적용하기에는 시간이 부족했다. 너무 좋은 빌드인데 아마 2012년에 보실 수 있을 것이다.

GSL 투어 어워드 올해의 선수상도 수상하면서 2011년 스타2 왕중왕이 됐다.

블리자드컵에서 우승을 했다고 해서 스타2 왕중왕이 됐다고 생각하진 않는다. (정)종현이가 지금까지 3회 우승을 했는데 나도 3번 우승은 해야 그런 말을 들을 자격이 있을 것 같다.

누적 상금 1억원을 돌파했다. 그 동안 상금은 어떻게 사용했나?

지금까지 획득한 상금은 모두 저축했다. 부모님께 용돈을 드리기도 한다. 이번 대회 우승 상금도 아마 그렇게 사용할 것 이다.

경기가 끝난 뒤 김가연 게임단주와 무슨 말을 나눴나?

너는 왜 항상 풀세트까지 가서 사람의 맘을 졸이느냐면서 심장마비 걸릴 뻔 했다고 하시더라(웃음).

GSTL에서 최강 마무리로 불렸고, 오늘도 마지막 경기를 이겼다. 본인 만의 비결이 있다면?

특별한 비결은 없다. 마음 속으로 집중하자고 계속 주문을 걸고, 무엇보다 팀원들의 믿음이다. 팀원들이 경기에 앞서 부스에 들어와서 여러 조언도 해준다. 그런 팀원들의 믿음이 도움이 된다.

문성원에게 2011년은 어떤 한 해로 기억될 것 같나?

잊지 못할 20대로 기억될 것 같다. 나중에 나이를 먹더라도 이런 사랑을 받지는 못할 것이다. 게임 하길 참 잘했다는 생각이 든다.

2012년 목표는 무엇인가?

내년에 출전하는 GSL 투어에서도 좋은 성적을 거두도록 하겠다. 그리고 GSTL이 새롭게 시작되는데 내년에는 슬레이어스가 모두 우승을 차지했으면 좋겠다.

마지막으로 하고 싶은 말이 있다면 전해달라.

이번 결승전을 준비하면서 스트레스도 많이 받고 힘들었다. 주변에서 (김)가연 누나와 (임)요환이 형을 비롯해 도움을 주셔서 오늘 승리할 수 있었다.
