I think at this point no one really knows what a "balanced map" is. We know maybe what is NOT balanced.
But my advice is trying to watch the maps people from all races play the most and try to emulate some of their things (base to base distances, expands distance to main, ramps, chokes, # of expos) but at the same try to be original with something:
Walls, bridges, islands/semi-islands, etc.
