Following the Code S Season 1 finals, AfreecaTV CEO Jung Chan Yong said (link may contain spoilers) "It would have felt unfortunate [for our fans], this season being downsized and held partially online. Despite that, our domestic and international fans supported us, so the tournament was that much more meaningful. Thanks to everyone's passionate support, the next season in July, we'll play every game offline from the FreecUP studio in Samsung-dong."

I just hoped that Afreeca allowed foreign advertisements for the English broadcast to expand the monetization other than the short term crowdfunding. Or some local companies like Samsung, Hyundai, CJ, LG, or BigHit which already had bases in foreign countries might be useful. Otherwise the same things can happen again. Anyway, that breaking news was a dope one.

Hopefully they keep some of the patreon for the prize pool though

Wish that GSL could have had crowdfunding earlier, but i suppose it may have given them a bad look or whatnot. The dream would be if they re-expand to Ro24 or somehow allow for a tiny bit of new blood so that the scene can stay interesting for a long time

With the decreased prize pool, I significantly doubt it. The money to be gained from winning (IF you win) isn't worth it after travel expenses are considered. I would LOVE to see the top foreign pros make another attempt and if they are set up well enough financially to be able to make the trip all the better. But I can't really blame them anymore for not wanting to try it. Even if they win, it's not really worth it and winning a Code S is something no foreigner has ever come close to achieving before.

With the Patreon so far, it's contributing $200k already, which means the prize pool is higher than 2022, unless you mean decreased in general the last several years, but hopefully the crowdfunding will increase a bit more to match that too
