I am just genuinely confused and just want to know if this is just ladder now because of fewer players or if I just keep working at it I will actually have some "GGs"
Other than that it's been great coming back, sc2 always satisfies my RTS itch.

After playing over 100 games and placing in a diamond (was a Master player), I am quite confused about the type of matches I've been getting. It seems it's either I get rolled by a far superior players or I crush them. Out of my 100 games, I can probably nearly count on my fingers how many games I played were me and my opponent are even in skill level. I know what you mean. I think there are less players in the population; MMR has significantly dropped compared to the skill level. For instance, I used to average around 5.2-5.3k and now I hover around 4.9k and hit GM's regularly. I play regularly and didn't get "bad" all of a sudden. Again, I just believe it to be the amount of players and/or cross region play (i.e. hitting many high level smurfs). I wouldn't be discouraged but it is frustrating sometimes. Good luck in your play! EDIT: Also the threshold for GM on NA is 5.1k whereas is used to be a minimum of 5.3k. That should tell you something.

Also great to have you back, love seeing the game come back to people that have been gone a while. Just played with my brother who is coming off a nearly year long hiatus, former diamond player. He put up a great fight against me after forever. Feels good man

I have the same feeling at my honorable level (Diams 3 3.2K~3.5K MMR) I have an hypothesis. I think there is a big gap of skill from a session to an other from some players. I think because this is an old game now, maybe people play more occasionally than before. At some lvl, you see the difference between someone who play 20 games by day and other who play 25 games by week. Maybe not in terms of pure skill, but more in terms of mechanics. I meet some guys at 3.2K MMR who just crush me as they have a pretty good macro (zerg notably) and sometimes meet some others at 3.5K MMR who play like a silver one.
