IEM Katowice 2020: Qualifiers

The online qualifiers for IEM Katowice 2020 have concluded, with 2018 champion (Wiki)Rogue and (Wiki)PartinG claiming the final two round-of-24 seeds in Korean server qualifier #2. With the twelve seeded players set, the wait begins for IEM Katowice to kick off on February 24th.

IEM Katowice will begin with the "open bracket" portion of the tournament, with 64 players battling it out live in Poland for the remaining Ro24 spots. IEM Katowice will be first event of the newly established ESL Pro Tour—the successor to the previous World Championship Series system.

Gotta feel bad for Trap. He came so close to qualifying every time, but just wasn't clutch enough.

Same with soO. And I have no doubt that Trap will qualify through the open bracket.

Probably Jin Air sends the whole team again this year? Will be interesting to see if the Chinese teams do the same, Kaizi in particular.

I think whether or not Jin Air sends their guys will be an important hint at how the larger Jin Air esports org is doing, especially given how they APPEAR to be reducing their investment in League of Legends. As I said before, when they promoted their SC2 coach to LoL coach: it could either be seen as a shrewd internal promotion of a successful coach OR a cost saving measure, depending on the other moves around it.

DPG don't even have to send their team there because everyone except firefly is qualified

I feel bad for Parting. That disconnect could not have happened for a worse time for him, he had just exposed a weakened flank in Rogue's Lurker ball and was going for it as soon as the disconnect happened. That gave Rogue plenty of time to think and plan his next move and he was able to recover and finish Parting off.

Oh well, at least he qualified anyway and maybe it was for the best that way since the other way around would have meant a Trap vs Rogue team kill.

I don't think the disconnect mattered that much. But we'll never know.
Trap vs PartinG was entertaining, but I would have liked to see Rogue vs Trap. soO looked to play sub-optimally with infestors and vipers. I wonder how Rogue would have played instead.

When I look at who makes it in a tournament where region lock is not in place, I don't understand why people want to get rid of region lock all of a sudden. It doesn't seem like much has changed.

It has indeed: the best foreigners are on par with the best koreans(despite the latter having more top tier players) right now, and after a certain treshold(top 16? top 24?), foreigners are more numerous and stronger than koreans.

In HoTS, the best foreigners could show up and win some series against koreans before being ultimately overwhelmed and there arguably weren't any foreigners in the top 16 best players in the world(a handful in the top 50).

neah, he mostly tore through some 2nd/3rd tier zergs in ZvZ, and was rather easily stopped by top tier players

It's just one that's TBD, but i think it's likely that it's an IEM event in China. They've been holding those regularly for like the last few years, even if they didn't have SC2 at all of them.

That would be amazing, that's precisely what SC2 needs. But how come you think this? It would seem logical that the other Global event would take place at Blizzcon?

And the final, non-global Master is already listed on LP as DH Leipzig 2021.
