However, the point pool distribution, by the region, looks to be more complicated than initially planned.
The root cause after all is KR region lock. Talking about how the point counts if KR-main player wins an Open Cup, I got replied that "it will be counted towards their Korean points account". That turns out, depends on how convenient KR players can participate in the Open Cup, which ranks Open Cup Asia (in KR server) > Open Cup America (lag) > Open Cup Europe (even higher lag), the point pool is effectively indefinitely shared with both Circuit region and KR region.
Especially for Open Cup Asia, I wouldn't be surprised if all the points from it are won by KR-main players and turn to KR points. If this assumption is true, however, it means the non-KR Asian players are competing based on a roughly 500 point short point pool in the very beginning, comparing to America and Europe. Remember that non-KR Asian players are still competing the global finals spot with other Circuit region players, such 500 point pool shortage can be HUGE. (Not to mention the tournament challenger spots of non-KR Asian regions have been cut in half (2->1) in the ESL Pro Tour system, comparing WCS.)
I understand ESL looks to be on track of removing region lock in the near future, but not yet for 2020-2021 season. True, the Open Cup point pool distribution (evenly in KR, EU, AM) is fair if there were no region lock -- which unfortunately happens to not be the case for 2020-2021 season.
Simply applying region lock to Open Cup Asia also doesn't look satisfying either. First it will make KR-main player to lose a source of weekly point pool. Second considering the popularity of all the three Open Cup #1, there are over 130 players participants Open Cup #1 EU, 88 players in Open Cup #1 AM, while only 22 in Open Cup #1 Asia... If region lock is forced on Open Cup Asia, I can see the community dissatisfied about Open Cup Asia being "too easy".
Thus, I feel the current point pool plan is not an optimal solution, but I also fail to bring up a "better" one. Just throwing my thoughts here, and hope our discussion can lead to a better pro scene in the future 3 years.
