Starcraft is dead is kind of an "esports myth" it's pretty much everything most esport fans knows about Starcraft these days. It's like me talking about Quake, I know of it, I can say it's super important or whatever but honestly I don't actually care about it or have ever taken more than half an hour to watch it. About the video itself obviously they missed match fixing both in BW and SC2, the rest is interesting altought we can (and have) talk in great length about region lock effect. SH were terrible, but I don't remember them ruinning that many game, it was only trully awefull in 2014 and that was actually a mostly Protoss year. I mean it was just the worst, but it didn't happen that much, so IDK if it had that much of a factor.

Quake and SC:BW is literally all I played while growing up, nothing else mattered, while all of my friends who played pc games were playing CS. Funny how you mention Quake here.

I guess you gotta have a decent storyline for a 10 minutes video.

I think they hint at it, with the RTS isn't as popular mention, and also relax dude its a video I found randomly. I just posted it for conversation/discussion.

I just finish the video and feel frustrated at the lack of mention of either match fixing scandal, the picture painted that Stephano and Idra literally retired purely because of swarm hosts, claims that everyone stopped watching starcraft because of swarm hosts when viewership oddly ROSE every swarm host match, and a really strange take I haven’t heard in ages that region locking sc2 killed the entire scene(?). Overall pretty disappointing video. Yea, alot was missed in the video and it definitely misdirects.

The game is just not fun outside of 1v1. If "casual" players aren't playing your game they are also not watching. Broodwar was so big because it had all these sub-communities like BGH, Fastest maps and all kind of UMS maps. The strict focus on 1v1 balance (and watching), the ladder/map system and the unbelievably garbage team maps killed all of these.

He focuses in on the most visible complaints from a large time period and hypes up the impact these complaints had on the game. His audience is people with a cursory understanding of what esports is, and maybe playing one game with big tournaments. They will believe a short video focusing on the low hanging fruit of fast-to-describe critical fall. They need a disproportionate amount of time spent on basic history of the game to care about the reasons they give. theScore was founded in 2012 covering traditional sports, adding on esports in 2015. They're babies in the industry and wouldn't make a thorough video unless they paid a group of oldtimers a lot of money to do it for them. You would need 15 minutes of production to barely cover Starcraft BW in Korea and Foreign tournaments. Culture, revenue, tournaments, organizations, foreign scene, streams, personalities. A sprinkling of SC's advances and good idea incorporation over prior RTS games and above prior 90s graphics. You would need another 15 minutes to cover the SC2 Beta & Release, youtube, early MLG NASL, pre-twitch GOM/u-somethingother/justin.tv parentage/forgot other, hype train early Korean tournaments. Basically, picture a film at least three times as long just explaining the rise and staying power of Blizzard SC. Then a grind of unknown time on why it stayed on top for so long, and some 7+ overlapping reasons why it stayed on top and why it couldn't stay on top forever. The rise of ARPG games like LoL splitting off casual RTS fans, simplified blob battles (incl infestor/broodlord, archon toilet, bioball protossball) vs SCBW, the non-adoption/partial adoption of old SCBW pros (also The Elephant In The Room, the fever of 'next big thing' in computer games, Blizzard patch schedule/instability of resolved metas getting destroyed, the generation that grew up on "new genre" RTS aging and the next generation being attracted by glittery newcomers. Talk about an incredibly long video with dozens of interviews and hundreds of video clips to illustrate the points! I'm probably missing at least 5 reasons in the previous paragraph that it would take a week to rediscover. The TL staff drafting an article based on being around from SCBW through SC2 as the predominant foreigner website would run to an incredible length. Essentially, theScore were bound to fail to present anything conclusive in a short video with their limited experience and budget, but at least they did a passable job on the history and almost got one medium-impact reason for its dwindling staying power. (Also, they should get some flak because blaming football viewership decline on just a handful of backward owners/orgs would never have flown, but this mediocre offering somehow did. And shout out to people noting the resemblance to the perennial "SC2 is ded and I know why that is" threads.)

There is no infinite growth - PC market is in decline compared to before. Is PC dead? Not at all. - Economy also doesn't grow infinitely Top games seem to be focused around teams. SC is mostly 1vs1 - LoL - CS:GO Games should adapt to future - SC2 didn't have skins, but CS and LoL adapted in that case which sort of makes players more attached to their "assets" - SC2 did well to introduce co-op, purchaseable skins (even if I dislike some of them) and purchaseable co-op commanders (apparently people pay for that too) - SC2 failed to popularise custom games (UMS in SC:BW) to cater to more casual players - Maybe RTS is just not that popular anymore Blizzard focused too much on fast balance changes instead of fun gameplay. - Do you like mass void rays? Mass swarm hosts? Mass colossi? Mothership? Also, video is right that SC being preloaded on computers was a huge point as well as national television. KeSPA was Blizzard's gateway to Korea and they didn't persuade them. Instead, they attacked KeSPA and attacking Korean gaming association can only backfire due to fans it brings with it.. For sure reasons for StarCraft's decline are complex and you can't just point out 1-2 reasons only.

It's interesting to look at the list of 'things that happened' since SC2's release in 2010 (and it's a long, long list), but I don't find many compelling arguments being made when people claim that [reason #15] was an outsize cause in SC2's decline over [reasons #1~10000].
