PvP was 1 base versus 1 base, usually blink all-in versus blink all-in, and the person who expanded first usually lost. A lot of natural expansions are made, but few are ever mined from. ZvZ was similar but instead 2 base versus 2 base, though a lot of games would also turn into roach wars where the person who got their third first won most of the time. PvT and TvZ were pretty good. They were both mostly marine/marauder/medivac/mine against standard Zerg and Protoss compositions. "Oh?" you wonder, "Why was this season so bad then if two matchups were good?" There were three Terrans in the RO32. Yes. Three. Maru, Supernova, and Bbyong. Supernova's mech got bopped in the RO32, and Bbyong lost in the RO16. Maru made it to the quarterfinals before finally losing to Life. The maps were horrid for Terran and balance wasn't in the race's favour at all. Suddenly the last couple seasons don't seem so bad, now do they? Most of the Terran games were pretty normal, though there was this stupidly bad game where Bbyong had to fight against 35 Swarmhosts: That just leaves PvZ, of which there were a massive number in this season since it was 16 Protoss and 13 Zergs. PvZ was an absolute dumpster fire. The game featured in this piece was actually about 10x more interesting than most games because something weird happened. Most of the PvZs in this season were one of the following: 1) Protoss does a blink/sentry or similar all-in off two bases to try and kill the Zerg since the map pool was so bad that taking a third for Protoss was next to impossible, but also for another reason I will get to soon*. 2) Protoss does an all-in, but doesn't manage to completely kill the zerg, then dies to swarmhosts about 15 minutes later. See Soulkey vs. Squirtle 3) *Protoss doesn't all-in, but instead takes a third and plays passively. Zerg goes to Lair ASAP and starts massing swarmhosts. Protoss dies 15 minutes later unless Zerg plays too passively, in which Protoss wins with the perfect deathball composition. Nothing of note happens for a good 10 minutes either way. 3b) 3) occurs but Zerg goes both spire and infestation pit at same time. Protoss panics upon scouting infestation pit, rushes double robo colossus, then dies to mutas. Alternately, Protoss scouts muta, goes overboard on muta defence, then proceeds to die to swarmhosts. 4) The game is played on Habitation Station, in which the Protoss already knows they probably lose, since the Zerg can quite literally just park their swarmhosts near a watch tower and pressure both viable Protoss third options, as can be seen in this game (the below game killed my soul. Squirtle loses with an economic lead because he cannot kill swarmhost/mass spore/viper/infestor, even after Soulkey loses all his corruptors by bunching them up on top of archons): 5) Zerg goes roach/ling all-in because a lot of maps required massive, awkward walls that made Protoss struggle. It doesn't work out for Zerg as much as they'd like. 6) Protoss goes colossus/void ray deathball, which kills Zerg unless they go swarmhost since nobody knew how to use vipers yet. 7) The game is played on Polar Night, so really nobody wins because that map is a travesty. I watch old GSL while I exercise, so I tend to have a high tolerance for how bad some of the games were. The first 2014 season was the only one so far that I had to actually quit watching because it was so bad.

Zest did the best he could after the disastrous start, but even playing perfectly from that point onward he had no business winning that game.
