[SPL] KT Rolster Move to First Place at Midway Point

Looking back, looking forward

By: Zealously

Week 3 has ended and so has Prime's chances at making the round playoffs, while KT and SKT are now all but locked in for the round finale. Requiring a highly unlikely chain of events to make it, IM, MVP and underperformers CJ come into week 4 knowing that they need landslide victories to have even a remote chance at making it past the round robin stage.

But before we go into the details for week 4, let's look back at week 3!

January 13th

SK Telecom T1 (3-1) CJ Entus
(P)PartinG < Yeonsu LE > (P)herO
(P)Classic < Sejong Research Station > (Z)Hydra
(T)BrAvO < Bel'Shir Vestige LE > (P)Sora

KT Rolster Move to #1 With Win Over SKT

SK Telecom took their first loss of the season against their eternal rival KT Rolster, whose mysterious tendency to win when Flash loses allowed (P)MyuNgSiK, (T)TY and (P)Stats to take out their respective opponents and edge out SKT with a 3-1 score. Myungsik's case was a curious one, as he had posted very few results outside one monstrous qualifier run six months back. However, seeing as he also earned Code S advancement just a few days later, it seems that his win against last season's GSL finalist (Z)soO was no fluke, and that may yet fulfil the potential many saw in him in the past. (T)TY continued to impress, beating (Z)Soulkey in an absolutely whacked out but entertaining game, utilising a perfectly tailored build to throw the SKT Zerg off and snowball his way to victory.

Although SKT took a loss to KT's mixed bag of players, they were strong enough to shut down CJ Entus despite (P)herO[jOin] surprisingly beating PvP master (P)PartinG in the first game. Hydra continued to follow his three-step way of playing Proleague so far, getting ahead early, attempting to make an awkward transition, and losing horribly. Just as in his game against Liquid's (P)HerO, Hydra's game against (P)Classic was disappointing. (P)Sora and (Z)EffOrt both looked capable of bringing the series back against (T)BrAvO and (Z)Soulkey respectively, but ultimately they both fell short on the back of a few bad calls and questionable decisions. On that note, here is a great game you should watch

Outside the matches between the big teams, the highlight of the week was (P)Stork finally breaking his depressing 13-game losing streak by defeating (Z)KassiA on Sejong Station. His streak, which began on the 21st of April last year with a defeat to sOs on Fighting Spirit. Since then, Stork lost a few games that he should have won, and for each defeat it looked almost like he regressed rather than progressed. In the Winner's Interview, Stork echoed the sentiment many fans seem to share, that each consecutive loss hurt his confidence and put him at a disadvantage going into his next game. With his streak broken and his confidence once again going up, we may yet see Stork became a true contender for the ace position on Samsung some time in the future.

In other news, (T)JinAir_Maru and (T)KT_TY held the Terran fort for their respective teams, combining for a total 11-0 so far, influencing the Terran winrates so greatly that Terran actually has the best overall record in the league. With this season's format, TY and Maru can almost single-handedly carry their teams, and by how dominant the two looked last week, they are well on their way to doing so.

Now, let's look at the upcoming week 4:

Round 1 Standings
1.KT4-114-7+7
2.SKT4-113-6+7
3.Samsung3-111-6+5

5.IM2-38-12-4
6.MVP1-46-9-3
7.CJ1-46-13-7

Roster Notes

  • Failed to qualify for Code S? Simultaneously look great and horrible? Haven't yet found your own in Starcraft II while your team mates have? Not to worry, (T)FanTaSy, your team is in a safe enough spot to field you anyway!
  • (Z)Hydra and (T)Bbyong continue their punishment for their disappointing openings in Proleague and have been replaced by (P)Bong (now Hush) and (T)Bunny. Since CJ's overall performance is best described with the word "fiasco", trying a new approach might be best.
  • Prime is playing the next rookie on their line-up (Z)DeParture twice this week, even replacing Kal against KT Rolster. He's received the toughest draw possible, facing (P)herO and (T)Flash in his first Proleague matches.
  • Mafia Zerg (Z)Action is making his season debut for KT Rolster.
  • The King of Wings (T)Mvp is finally playing a game!
  • (Z)TRUE vs (T)FanTaSy gave us one of last year's best TvZs. They play again on the 20th, this time on Star Station.
  • 1 TvT, 1 ZvZ, 4 TvP, 5 ZvT, 5 PvP, 8 PvZ

Must Watch Games: Week 4

Keeping the Hope Alive: MVP and CJ Entus

When EG-TL was in dire straits last season and the only thing that could take them to the playoffs was a miracle, fans rallied behind them, eager to support the fan favorites are they attempted to create a miracle. While not making the round 1 playoffs is a small thing in comparison to finishing dead last, MVP and CJ Entus are in a similar situation to EG-TL of last season. They can still make it to the round playoffs by beating all of their remaining opponents, but it's a long shot for sure. Praying that your favorite team makes it, cheering your lungs out for the ace player hoping that he'll take it and by some miracle bring the team to the next stage, is simultaneously a great and terrifying feeling that certainly adds another layer of excitement to watching Proleague.

If you want to go through all that, here is what needs to happen for MVP to reach the first round playoffs:
  • MVP wins their 3 remaining matches against KT, CJ and Samsung
  • Incredible Miracle goes 1-1, losing 0-3 to Samsung and beating Jin Air 3-2
  • Jin Air loses to both Prime and SKT OR Samsung loses their remaining three matches against IM, MVP and SKT
This would put MVP at 4-3 in matches, passing IM and either Jin Air or Samsung to finish 3rd/4th.

About as likely as: Bisu winning 2014 GSL Season 2

Now, if you wouldn't mind MVP hilariously failing to make the cut through three consecutive flops, here is what has to happen for CJ to make it to the round one playoffs:
  • Jin Air or Samsung lose their remaining matches, preferrably by going 0-3 in all three matches.
  • CJ wins their remaining two matches against Prime and MVP, going 3-0 against both.
  • Incredible Miracle loses horribly to Samsung but somehow beat Jin Air by a landslide.
  • DongRaeGu doesn't randomly remember how to carry MVP in team leagues
CJ making the round playoffs isn't just about winning the matches, they will have to rely on getting great map score differentials against Prime and MVP and the other teams forgetting how to play Starcraft over the weekend.

Slightly less likely than: Jessica forgiving all the ex-SlayerS players and joining Axiom as coach.

If you're a fan of medals, you're probably a fan of team IM. Although they've historically been fairly weak in team leagues, they still have a chance at redemption in round one. Hey, they're even fielding Mvp to see what happens. Here's what has to happen:
  • CJ and MVP don't pull off a miracle and remain below IM in the rankings.
  • IM beats Jin Air and Samsung (preferrably with 3-0 or 3-1 scores)
  • One (or both) of Samsung or Jin Air choke in week 5 and lose both their matches along with one in week 4.
Just as likely as: An all-Terran group in Code S

Focus match: Fantasy vs TRUE

Fantasy is an enigma. Seemingly at random, he showcases almost unrivalled micro and aggression. It's the kind of play that saw him edge out Life in WCS Korea Season 2, and it's the kind of play that he put up when he faced Jin Air's TRUE last year. Both players are characteristically aggressive, favoring unrelenting attacks over a turtle-style of play. Much like the immortalised Gumiho vs Losira, Fantasy and TRUE's play styles interact in a way that will almost always produce extremely exciting games. Of course, it must be mentioned that Fantasy is not very good at macro. As Zergs learned to handle the Terran aggression that was almost impossible for many to cope with in mid-2013, the room for error in the economy department became a lot smaller. Judging by Fantasy's recent games in Code A, he still has some issues in that department. However, those same issues have been prevalent throughout HotS and they have never prevented him from playing extremely well on occasion. Proleague is where Fantasy grew up, in a manner of speaking, and the best of 1 format could end up favoring his inconsistency and allow him to take the game, showing that doubting the Terrorist is unwise.

But however much we harp on Fantasy for being a flawed player, TRUE is hardly a paragon of consistency. He hasn't played many games lately, nor have they been particularly impressive, but KeSPA players have a tendency to bring out their best in Proleague - whether it is because they feel more motivated or because the format somehow suits them better is debatable, but many of the Proleague heroes fail to consistently bring their A-game to individual leagues despite tremendous skill.

At the heart of it, this match is one of ifs and maybes. Will Fantasy play on the level where he apparently doesn't even need to macro well to win? Will TRUE play on the level he did when he last faced Fantasy? It's certainly possible. If I can recommend a single potentially great match to tune into this week, this is the one. Don't miss the oppurtunity.

Week 4 Predictions

CJ Entus > Prime
MVP < KT Rolster
Incredible Miracle < Samsung Galaxy Khan
Jin Air Green Wings > SK Telecom T1
KT Rolster > Prime
MVP < CJ Entus

I hope it isn't another KT vs SKT only sort of thing again.

I want to see IM and CJ step up their game, and now's the best time to do it.

SKT is taking it easy. Would be unfair if they won everything and made the entire season dull.

Mind doesn't work in logical ways. If Stork's issues are mostly his mind, then this win is great. I have to imagine that's the case, since Stork has been sent out I believe more than anyone on the team besides Roro and Solar. It's possible they're playing him because of his popularity and seniority, in which case, yeah, this wouldn't mean anything. But if Stork's a very good player, then this is a great win, even against an unknown player.

I'm also excited for the Fantasy game, but why not recommend Maru vs Soulkey? :o
That's maybe the two best players in kespa against each other.

Samsung definitely have some potential in Roro, Reality and Solar... but they have some real deadweight like Stork to accompany it.

Their 3 wins have been against Prime (auto-victory), an inexplicably slumping CJ Entus and Jin Air, while losing to KT. Solar played out of his mind to beat sOs twice in their win vs Jin Air, but otherwise they really have been middling in the pack. I think their games against MVP and IM will be the true test of where they're at amongst the pack, as IM in particular seem like the benchmark team that separate top 4 / bottom 4 to me. I predict that they'll lose to SKT, beat MVP, and probably lose to IM. That'd seat them about 4th/5th in the competition and seems pretty realistic of the caliber of players they have.
