EG’s New Recruit Park “JYP” Jin Young: “I will show you my true value”
Coping with Terran & a GSL spot, killing two birds with one stone

The “Zerg Killer” Park Jin Young (JYP of EG) has joined EG, one of the best North American Pro-gaming teams.
On December 30th, 2011, EG announced JYP’s recruitment. JYP, heralded as a “New Type Protoss” gained publicity in his skilled matches against Zerg players. After placing in Code A three times, JYP has also succeeded in obtaining a spot in 2012 GSL Season 1 Code S.
JYP, who had been playing independently for about a month, is now able to face a new season in a new environment. Many also anticipate the future effect of reuniting JYP and former TSL teammate Lee Ho Joon (PuMa).
JYP, through a phone interview with thisisgame.com, revealed, “I want to show my true value by working on refining my skills against Terran players.”
You have been recruited by EG. How do you feel?
As previously mentioned on the EG site, I believed I joined the best out of all the foreign teams. I lost against Terran players a lot, but I want to improve in this area and prove my worth. In one word, I would describe myself as “happy.”
We are curious on how you went about the EG recruitment process.
After I left TSL, GSL Code A was being scheduled. Until then, I wasn’t intent on searching for a new team and I decided to practice independently. After Code A Round 3 was completed, I was able to get in contact with EG with PuMa’s help. I was planning on searching for a foreign team, and it appeared to have been perfect timing. I wasn’t a bad deal at all, so there was no hesitation in making my decision.
After EG’s announcement, how were the reactions of those around you?
The fact that I had joined EG was thoroughly concealed until now. [Laughs]. After the reveal, I received quite a bit of snub from players that I am close to. I guess overdid the secrecy. Everyone appears to wish the best for me.
From now on, you’ll have to play with a foreign team; don’t you feel like you’ll have to study English a lot harder?
I’m at the skill level where I can understand important vocabulary and get the general gist of things. This recruitment has made me come to understand that English is really necessary. Either way, I will have to study English a lot more. Once I get settled into the EG house, I will then study hard and casually progress my skills.
Can you tell us about your benefits?
I think I’m in the same position as other players on my team. We receive a decent salary and equipment support funds for international tournaments. That’s about it. The salary is satisfying.
How are your living conditions?
I will not be living the EG house in January. I believe I will move there in February. It is possible that I will reside in the SlayerS house. (EG and SlayerS are in a partnership in which they offer exchange housing.)
We are curious about what you discussed with former teammate Lee Ho Joon (PuMa).
There was nothing that we explicitly discussed. However, we did mention that we wouldn’t be lonely anymore when we go to future international tournaments. I told PuMa, “You’re good at competing in International tournaments, and I received a spot in Code S, so I guess we would also do better in our country.” Oh, and PuMa told me that EG supports their players a lot. Things like that also helped me make my decision during the recruitment process.
Are you friends with HuK and Idra?
At the moment, I am only acquainted with HuK and Idra. I have seen HuK around more, but I’ve only talked to him once. At the present moment, the only person I am close to in EG is PuMa.
It seems that you will participate in more foreign competitions.
I believe I will be attending all major league international competitions. I am already scheduled to go to Germany tomorrow (January 3rd). Because the event does not coincide with any Code S schedules, I will be exhibited at the Homestory Cup in Germany as an EG invited player.
We believe that your new team will help you in your Code S preparations.
Of course, they will be of great help. Even before my recruitment, EG players helped me in my placement matches. I’m weak against Terrans, but I believe I practiced the most with PuMa.
Please tell us your future plans or anything we should look forward to.
My biggest goal in 2012 is to overcome playing against Terrans. I want to raise my win rate against Terran to at least 50%. I will attend a lot of foreign tournaments but I believe the GSL is going to be the biggest stage for me. I will kill two birds with one stone by trying to accomplish these two goals at once. I hope to receive a lot of encouragement from my fans. A lot of people helped me after I left TSL, and I want to thank them now.

‘저그 킬러’ 박진영(EG)이 북미 최고의 프로게임단 EG에 합류하게 됐다.
지난 2011년 12월 30일 EG는 박진영 영입 사실을 발표했다. ‘뉴타입 프로토스’로 주목 받던 박진영은 극강의 저그전 실력을 통해 유명세를 탄 유망주다. 3번의 코드A를 치른 뒤 2012 GSL 시즌1 코드S 승격에 성공하기도 했다.
약 한 달 간의 무소속 생활을 정리한 박진영은 새로운 환경에서 새 시즌을 맞이할 수 있게 됐다. 과거 TSL에서 함께 활약했던 이호준(EG)과의 동반 상승 효과도 기대되는 상황이다.
EG에 입단하게 된 박진영은 디스이즈게임과의 전화 인터뷰를 통해 “부족한 테란전을 보완해서 내 진정한 가치를 보여주고 싶다”는 소감을 밝혔다.
EG로 합류하게 됐다. 소감이 어떤가?
EG홈페이지를 통해서도 밝혔듯 해외 팀 중에 가장 좋다고 생각하는 팀에 합류하게 되어서 기분이 좋다. 테란전에서 많이 졌는데 그런 부분들을 보완해서 성적으로 내 가치를 보여드리고 싶다. 한 마디로 소감은 ‘행복하다’이다.
EG에 합류하게 된 과정이 궁금하다.
TSL을 나온 뒤에 GSL 코드A 일정이 있었다. 그 때까지는 새 팀 합류를 고려하지 않고 무소속 상태에서 연습을 하려고 했다. 코드A 3라운드가 끝난 뒤 (이)호준이가 EG에 이야기를 해준 덕에 접촉을 할 수 있게 됐다. 해외 팀을 알아보려고 생각은 하고 있었는데 좋은 타이밍에 만나게 됐다. 나쁘지 않은 조건이었기 때문에 빠르게 결정했다.
EG 입단 사실이 발표된 이후 주변 반응은 어땠나?
사실 EG 입단 사실을 그 동안 철저하게 숨겨왔다(웃음). 공개된 후에 친한 선수들에게 핀잔을 좀 들었다. 너무 숨겼나보다. 다들 잘해보라는 반응이다.
앞으로 해외 팀에 활약을 하게 되는데 영어 공부를 열심히 해야하지 않을까?
중요한 단어 정도는 알아 듣고 의미만 파악하는 정도의 실력이다. 이번에 입단을 하는 과정에서 영어의 필요성을 느꼈다. 아무래도 열심히 공부를 해야할 것 같다. EG 숙소에 머물게 되면 그 때 열심히 공부를 하면서 자연스럽게 실력을 길러야 할 것 같다.
어떤 조건인지 말해줄 수 있나?
아마 팀 내 다른 선수들과 비슷할 조건일 것이다. 어느 정도의 연봉과 해외 대회 출전 지원이다. 그 정도다. 장비 지원도 있다. 연봉 수준에는 만족하고 있다.
숙소 생활은 어떻게 되는 것인가?
1월까지는 숙소 생활을 하지 않을 것 같다. 2월부터 생각하고 있다. 아마도 슬레이어스 숙소에서 생활을 하게 될 것으로 보인다(EG와 슬레이어스는 숙소를 제공해주는 협력 관계를 맺고 있다).
한 때 같은 팀이었던 이호준과 어떤 이야기를 나누었는지 궁금하다.
딱히 나눈 말은 없었다. 다만 같은 팀이 됐으니 해외 대회에 나갈 때 외롭지 않겠다고 하더라. 나는 호준이에게 “너는 해외 대회를 잘하고 나는 코드S에 갔으니 우리나라에서도 더 잘하겠다”고 말했다. 아, 호준이가 EG는 선수들에게 지원을 많이 해준다고 이야기를 해주더라. 그런 이야기들이 입단을 결정하는데 큰 도움이 됐다.
크리스로란줴나 그렉필즈와 친분은 있나?
크렉필즈와는 인사만 하는 정도의 사이였다. 크리스로란줴 선수는 좀 더 자주 보기는 했지만 인사만 했다. 친한 사이는 아니다. EG에 친한 사람은 호준이 밖에 없다.
해외 대회에 더 자주 나가게 될 것 같다.
메이저급 해외 대회에는 거의 다 나갈 것 같다. 벌써부터 내일(3일) 독일에 가는 일정이 생겼다. 입단이 결정된 직후에 1월 3일 일정을 물어보더라. 코드S 일정을 보니 충분히 갈 수 있는 일정이었기 때문에 독일 홈스토리컵에 EG 초청 선수로 출전을 하게 됐다.
코드S를 준비하는데 있어서 새로운 팀이 많은 도움이 될 것 같다.
당연히 많은 도움이 된다. 입단 전이었지만 승격강등전을 준비할 때도 EG 선수들이 많이 도와줬다. 테란전 극복이 가장 문제인데 아마 (이)호준이와 가장 많은 연습을 하지 않을까 싶다.
앞으로의 계획이나 각오를 말해달라.
2012년 최고의 목표는 테란전 극복이다. 테란전 승률을 50%로 일단 끌어 올리고 싶다. 해외 대회에 자주 나가기는 하겠지만 GSL이 가장 중요한 무대라고 생각하고 있다. GSL과 테란전 두 마리 토끼를 잡겠다. 팬들이 많이 격려해주시면 좋겠다. 팀을 나온 뒤에 도와주신 분들이 많은데 그 분들께도 감사하다는 말을 하고 싶다.
