Players such as myself have a lot of years of experience playing RTS games, so our mechanics are sound and our understanding of the game is way way way way ahead of anyone else who started playing RTS with SC2 alone. We're able to get there with basically just RTS wisdom and experience if we are focused and playing well.
Dunno bout that, SC2 is my first RTS and I play a couple of hours a week, easily got into Master. I know lots more like myself who never played any RTS's before and are in Master League. Most people who I know that aren't in the league just don't bother thinking about why they've lost, and place the blame on the builds of their opponents.
You must realize that in the RTS community, there are very few people concerned with why they actually lost. Just look at the SC2 strategy forum
You're right though, anyone who is mature enough to actually improve will make it to master league.

I don't find this to be accurate in the slightest. It's not only inaccurate, it's like the exact opposite of what actually happens, and I seriously doubt the guy who posted that is in master's. Anyway OP, I spend about 60-90 minutes on weekdays and maybe a couple hours on weekends playing. Not this weekend tho cause im at my parents' house for easter^^ I guess most people in Masters get in Masters by just outplaying people in a macro game? bahahahaha don't be so hilarious. I'm not being "hilarious" - this is exactly what happens; either macro games or shorter games that end with a powerful 1 base push. Either your definition of "cheese" is way too broad, or you are not in master's league. 6 pools, 4-5gate allin, marine/scv all in, All day baby Now you're just lying man -.-
I mean it definitely depends on where you are in masters and what race you play.
As P on my main account where I'm playing high masters/GM players all day, I almost never get cheesed in anything besides PvP. I mean, I guess if you count 1 base PvT marine/tank/raven/whatever and buki-builds, then maybe 10-15% of my games are cheese, but those builds aren't frustrating to play against, and they only work if you slip up on macro. And even in PvP, it's super-standard cannon rushes. I never get proxy gated anymore.
OTOH, when I played Z for a week on a smurf, where I was playing people who were 3300-3500 last season, I got 4 gate nexus cancelled, cannon rushed, 2 rax super fucking all-in'd at least 50% of my non ZvZ games. I don't understand ZvZ enough to know wtf is considered cheese.

You can't really compare yourself to other players. Some masters got there in no time despite having no RTS experience. Some got there by playing 2000 games. Most of us lie somewhere in the middle.
I think you should just play the game and enjoy the process. Goals are fun (getting masters was a goal for me too), but if you get too serious it will suck the fun away. When I was gunning to get promoted and would go on a losing streak, I'd get super pissed and have zero fun. When I just get super high and try to play well and focus without worrying about results, its tons of fun and I usually do better too.
I play 20-30 ladder games a week. It took me about 500 games to get to masters.

Maybe in NA yeah.

I would say I was at the masters level somewhere during the beta, since I got promoted to it as soon as it came out once I played a single game (as well as diamond) so its a little hard to say how many games it took. I think I had about 300 games or so before I was at the top of my platinum league in beta. This was with no RTS experience coming into sc2. My experience with staying in masters is much like everyone else in this thread.

Hihi, My ign is SolidPyre and I'm a 400point master player with about 180 bonus pool^^. I don't play that often to be honest, for me the game is natural. I didn't play broodwar and I bought starcraft 2 just like any other xbox game that I buy. I had no experience in RTS, infact I mainly played the all too familiar Runescape on the pc (as a level 128 for anyone that knows the game). I play mainly custom games with my team (solid) and play maybe 1-2 hours a night and weekends maybe 4-6. I'm also only 16 years old and so have more time on my hands than say someone who has to work. This is all I can say for now, hope it helped.

I play anywhere from 30-40 games a day and i'm sitting 800 pts or so right now.
So roughly about 8-12 hours a day varying and I can balance out time for my 2 yr old and active duty military during the weekdays (rarely weekends).
Just takes time and dedication and you'll get there. Just keep up the hard work.

I spend 3-8 hours just eating, drinking, surfing, watching stream/videos and waking up to be sharp enough to play at a high level, occasional 100 kg benchpress at the gym
I play about 20-40 hours a week, can depend how tired I feel, I'm on the computer like 14/7 :/
I was pretty much already micro/macro mechanically strong from my BW custom/team games experience, I've still never massed 1v1 games or learned to use BO's lol, somehow I still have higher APM than the majority of the people I play with but still never able to break 150-200
I'm 22 years old soon and getting to old for this shit ~_~*

3-5 Hours a week. 700 Points Master.
|
I play probably 5-10 hours per week. 99% of the games I play are ladder games. I spend a decent amount of time watching streams.

Not even 50% honestly...

I play about 4 hours a day, so that's about 28 hours a week. I'm only diamond, so I think there's more to it than just time to get into master's.

im in GM and i play only like 10-20 ladder games a week at most while maintaining my rank
and probably twice as many in customs

Agreed, I'm 700 pt masters and I see cheese in around 1/10 games

depends on my motivation. i've had a couple of months where i played about 1 hour/month and then a few weeks where i've played 30 hours/week. right now i'm averaging about 30min/week.
