I'm about 600 point masters. I spent about 7 hours this week power leveling a friend from low diamond to mid masters. Beyond that mass gaming (45-9!)
but yeah, beyond that, I play like 4-6 hours a week total, 3450 prereset. I have an issue laddering continuously on my name, as I HATE losing lol. I only have 50 games on my name this season at 600 points.
I guess most people in Masters get in Masters by just outplaying people in a macro game? bahahahaha don't be so hilarious. For every 5-6 cheesey games, I get 1 legit one. Maybe it's just my MMR or bad luck, I don't know. These kind of comments are so funny. It's obvious a player who has a strategy they can't beat, yet refuse to try and yield to a new way around an issue.
You can easily get into Masters & stay in Masters if you can "master" defending cheese, which is 98% of the time in Master league matches. Yawn. In the 50+ games I powerleveled, I got cheesed all of twice. Twice. One 2 rax marine scv all in on slag I saw coming a mile away and held with LESS marines.
You all do know cheese isn't unstoppable, and has a lot of tells? Builds show signs if you scout. And, you don't always have to engage right away... You can run around until 2 more marines and a hellion pop to make a marine scv more dealable instead of just running to the slaughter.

3500 masters last season, 9ish hours per week. If you want to get into master league, start macroing every game, use the same BO religiously until you know how to hold off all sorts of cheese for whatever match up you get.

It depends, from 0 to 20 hours a week. Average probably around 3-4 hours. I play the game to try to relax a bit. All ladder really, don't know anyone who plays sc2 & have like no online friends.
I play a game, check the replay and use my imagination. Next time when I face a similar situation I go for a different approach. When I'm having difficulties against a certain race I come to TL and check if there is a new build or idea. Stealing a build is super easy but I normally just steal an" idea" and have my own approach, it feels more natural than trying to force a change. tl:dr - think while you play & skim the replay. The better your focus the better results, regardless of time put into whatever you are trying to learn.
Oh, yeah 3500 last season, around top ten now.

I expected a thread on this already but a search for it came up empty. Pretty much, what I'm hoping for in a discussion/survey is this - how many hours weekly (in general) do you Master league players spend practicing and laddering on SC2, and how often do you practice with friends/partners rather than straight up ladder? What individual practice regimens do you find most helpful to maximizing the usefulness of your time?
The reason I ask (and a bit of background about me) is that for as much as I love Starcraft 2, I simply don't have a lot of time to play and my technological resources aren't that good. I work an average of 70 hours per week, have a social life, and I live in a historic building in the middle of nowhere and thus have to rely on Mobile Broadband (with its 5GB monthly limits) as my main internet connection, which makes purchasing coaching just not an option (at least until summer). This makes my average play time each week between 6 and 12 hours.
Despite all of this, I'm strongly passionate about improving my Random-playing low diamond/high platinum self enough to attain my goal of Masters. I'm aware that not sticking to a certain race is another thing that will slow my curve, yet I find exploring all of the different matchups intriguing as well as a way to keep the game from becoming stale - and after all, the game should be about fun, right?
Anyhow, enough about me - Masters players, I want to hear from you, post away! If you play at least 10 hours a week I think you can steadily improve. Coming from a high (thank god for GM now I can call myself that :D:D) masters player.
That's the minimum though. Depending on what's happening in rl I'll play way more trying to improve (I already have 600 ladder games for season 2...).

Currently i probably play 2-3 hours a week but to get into masters i probably played 10 hours a week.
|
i play about 10 games a week lol and 0 of them are on ladder i'm in a bit of a rut can't find motivation to play with the current state of the meta game maybe i'll be inspired soon but for now i just idle in the menus and obs or talk to people lol

I play around 20-30 games per week, mostly during weekends and like 90% ladder.
|
40+ easy O_O; even though.. I probably should be considered "grand master" but since im in masters league figured i would vote/post !

5< hours per week. Some is that is 2v2ing with a buddy. I try to keep up with my bonus pool but failed spectacularly last season.
It really depends on what else I've got going on during the week. :-/

I'd say half of the master level players are there from talent and half are there from game massing and cheesing every game. Players such as myself have a lot of years of experience playing RTS games, so our mechanics are sound and our understanding of the game is way way way way ahead of anyone else who started playing RTS with SC2 alone. We're able to get there with basically just RTS wisdom and experience if we are focused and playing well.
Yet at the same time, our years of experience come from our age, so a lot of us are now in our early 20s and don't have as much time for gaming as we once did. We either graduated from a university recently or we are in the later years of our education where it takes a great time of our time. So we usually end up getting into master league then going afk the rest of the season :p

Most times I play a game a week, if I have the time. (Don't always win those..) Then again, if I have the time, I could drill out 20 games (and win around 12-13 of them)
It's a tossup really.

Dunno bout that, SC2 is my first RTS and I play a couple of hours a week, easily got into Master. I know lots more like myself who never played any RTS's before and are in Master League. Most people who I know that aren't in the league just don't bother thinking about why they've lost, and place the blame on the builds of their opponents.

I only spend 5-7 hours a week due to my schedule. Wish I had more time to play -_-

So many pro macro players in Masters. I rarely see Ts or Zs cheesing, Protoss' do some retarded 1 base shit like every second game against me though. I dunno, i get mass linged in 80% of my ZvZ(and i mean the get expo make no drones -> massling), T actually gives me the least cheese(infact hardly ever at all) and Protoss is always some some sort of 1base stupid build/cannon rush in like 60% the other 40% are usually 3gate expo into something standard though

It took a while to get to Masters, but once there I personally haven't played all that much. I'd definitely say it's more than 10 hours a week, but that's considering I never really played before maybe 2 months ago. Either way, good luck in your quest!

I'm Mid-high masters. I barely played any SC1 (mostly like tower defense, etc), and I've played maybe 200 games total (almost all ladder) since beta. Play maybe 5 games a week max, with spurts of practice here and there (5 games a day). I win most of my games with superior macro.
Definitely goes to show that thinking about the game/studying replays can also be a good way to improve, since I clearly don't play very much at all.
I had a strong mechanics from a WC3 background though (so I was always really comfortable with hotkeys, constantly checking my producing structures, etc).

I do not know if I'd put much faith in how much we master players spend time playing this game. There's a vast difference in the time (and effort) needed to maintain a skill and the time needed to achieve a higher skill level.
I play 5 hours or less of ladder a week. Maybe spend 10'ish doing customs with friends.

8-10 hours a day of practice regime...?!?!? i know i have alot of time on my hands

Agreed here. I would say that at least 60% of the time Protoss will do a 1-base all-in (4-gate or fake expand). Another 30% of the time is probably me cheesing him (7 pool etc), which literally always results in him 4-gating a few minutes in, or other things like cannon cheese, etc. I would definitely say that 4 gate is more common than 3 gate expand, though.
Terran usually isn't cheesy, unless you consider 2-rax mass bunker rushes to be cheesy (which is like 30-40% of games, depending on map).
ZvZ usually isn't cheesy either, I guess?
So basically:
PvZ: Pure cheesefest TvZ: low cheese ZvZ: low cheese

I suppose my original question was poorly worded in hindsight - I was really looking for peoples experiences on how long it took to get to Master league and what steps helped get them there most efficiently. Still, knowing how much time it takes to maintain is still beneficial.
What I've learned so far from this is that I need to spend more time analyzing replays rather than just taking time to think between losses...and that I'm encouraged at the poll results from earlier saying it doesn't take a huge time investment to maintain once you get there. I really do work 70+ a week (teacher, coach, and dorm supervisor at a high school) but hopefully this summer I will have time to buckle down and work seriously at it. Last time I had a two week break, I went from platinum to diamond.
