True...the thing with my desktop is that it has that pause problem (that some others are having). Might be a problem w/ our end of deal, but maybe phase 2's hardware/software update will smooth things out.

I would also guess that the beta isn't optimized yet. I've heard that WoW beta was same way -- took up a lot more resources in beta than it did after release.

I hope you're right. That patch 13 (I think it was 13...you guys know which one) messed everything up, but I thought they cleaned it up nicely after a week. What I'm worried about is after this hard/software update, it may be messy for the first week again...

i dont understand. any quad core should be fine, hell, i think most dual cores 2ghz + will be fine depending on the settings/resolution.

Im pretty sure that the p4 wont cut it no matter what you do.

It is fine...but I don't think SC2 actually utilizes all 4 cores. It's just the pausing (for the beginning of the first game and just random times) that annoys me....but oh well, SC2 is still one hell of a game.

I've got some problems when there are more than 400(2v2 + matches) units on screen. My pc starts to crawl, the game becomes very choppy. I've got an ati 4850 and a 4200+ amdX2. I'm thinking it's my processor thats causing the problem(it's about 3 years old now). Or is it my graphics card choking on all the units(cause I heard sc2 was designed to stress gfx cards more than the cpu)? Dont want to upgrade one and find out that the other component was causing the problem..thanks guys.

some graphics settings affect the cpu more than the gfx and reverse, try increasing cpu intensive settings and see if performance worsens more than if you increase gpu intensive settings.

Upgrade the CPU and video card should do. However you need to check your motherboard before you do incase of any changes.

Dual cores are only now getting "somewhat" used to their true potential... Nevermind a quad that will probably be just a dual until 2-3 years from now. But if it makes you feel important whatever ....

Adobe flash is a real CPU hog now, I've noticed. If you watch youtube videos (especially at fullscreen if you have a high resolution display), and livestream, it can quite easily bring CPU usage to 100% for older CPUs. Even many flash games bring CPU usage to 100%.

1. CPUs aren't only used for gaming. Even with Windows Vista Quad cores could be used to more efficiently run programs and operating system, let alone all the newer programs and versions of programs (and operating systems) that have come out since then. Many many games have had quad core performance boosts for a long time now too. Blizzard doesn't because they take a longer timeframe to develop their games, and do not have the time to completely revamp their game engine any time that sort of thing happens.
2. Even if game were just getting dual core advantages now (which would be a joke, since even quad cores started quite a while back), it doesn't mean that games that use quads won't be out in 3-4 years. Many people Keep their PCs for 3-6 years before getting a new one, so getting a quad now (or in the past) is an investment one can make so they don't have as much of a need to upgrade again 1 or 2 years later.

Lastly, if you have something like a pentium 4 Extreme edition that is overclocked, it's obviously going to perform better than this guys 3.15 Ghz CPU.
Even then, I can guarantee that CPU is not good enough to be running all PC games at decent settings. It also would not be optimal for operating system and programs. Sure you can run games on it, but it doesn't mean Gaming (or especially non-gaming) performance is even close to optimal.
That said, the dude that said P4s were crap is a complete idiot. For their time P4s were powerful, and generally gave better performance than AMD's similar CPUs(although at a higher price point).

Xapti P4s are generally considered one of the worst CPUs. Athlon 64s at 2ghz would absolutely demolish Pentium 4s at 2.8ghz -_-

Time for an upgrade.

My computer is pretty new but I'm still afraid of what would happen if I were to play a 4v4 game with everyone at max supply. I'm running 1920x1080 (24" widescreen) with everything on ultra.

New specs:
AMD Phenom X4 965 BE @3.4ghz
ATi Radeon 5850 1GB Black Edition @ 765/4500
MSI 790FX-GD70
8GB G.Skill Ram

I would lag in a 1v1 max food battle with everything on ultra running at 1280x1024 (19") with my old rig. There was no way to play 2v2 unless I drop the settings down to medium.

Old specs:
AMD Athlon X2 3800+ @ 2.0ghz
Nvidia Geforce 512MB 9800GTX+
Asus A8N-SLI Premium
4GB OCZ Ram

I would check the heat if I were you. Based on the fact that your system is old, heat can be a very big problem. I used to have a problem with youtube on my old computer because bad heat dissipation.

SC2 is CPU bottlenecked more than most games. It may not push the most poly's but it has to calculate a ton of stuff when there are a lot of units on screen. Thus the demand on CPU and poor performance.

freshiie22,

Please use the program located at this link:

CPU Z

And kindly take a screenshot of what it says your motherboard is. It should be the first tab of the program when you run it. If you cannot provide a screen shot please provide a model name/number for your motherboard. This way members of the community can determine the most efficient upgrade for you.

For the future, there is a computer help blog that I maintain in the blog section of the forums. A shortened link to it can be located in my signature of this post.

The reason it's a good idea in this case to post the motherboard and the motherboard socket number, is because if the socket is 775, there is a relatively cheap way about bumping up from single core to dual core. If it is older than a socket 775 model, you will have to purchase a new motherboard and processor to make progress.

The 775 socket is one of, if not only, the sockets that supports a single core through a quad core processor.
