Despite that most of the teams who sign their QB's to big deals get much worse. If the cowboys can get anything decent in trade they should do it just to avoid the cap charges of whatever deal it would take to sign Dak. This is a good point, but I don't think it's the case that paying your QB a lot is bad idea, like it is with running backs. Rather, the rare QB is definitely worth it, and teams are afraid of missing out. Heck, I don't even think we "knew" Mahomes would be as good as he is after one year, but most teams would have paid for him...and most would be wrong.

I agree that paying a QB a lot is not always a bad idea. Peyton, Brady, Brees, and now Mahomes, Russ, probably Jackson, all worked out or will work out pending injury. But if you were able to do the math I would suggest the risk of paying that much and ending up with a medium or worse QB. Compared to the risk of getting a qb out of the draft and having a pretty similar risk but at a fraction of the cost with having all that other money to load up around him which will up his chances at success and team success. Then if you throw in some extra draft picks for even more cheap talent, its a slam dunk. Without the salary cap the calculus would change but right now I believe the odds to play would be on the cheap QBs whether that is the draft or after someone over paid gets cut and you can get them pennies on the dollar.

WR who is probably regarded as the 2nd best ever if he had more than 2 years of competent QB play and has been playing since the dawn of the century, vs. talented guy half his age? Who would have paid Mahomes (considering it would not be possible) after his 1 game? And how could paying him that early have been a mistake? You get freaking Mahomes, and after 1 game, I guess for $10 million a year?

I was trying to use fitzgerald as a example of another current player that is much more close to norm. And he didn't say one game, he said one year. And he was not saying they did pay him like that, but rather that most teams would in spite of the risk.

Look at the other QBs in the league where the teams have to make a decision. You think you know but you don't. You don't fucking know. You look back and think you do, but you don't.

TBH i don't think its so hard after a few years. The only hard call on the near term horizon is Lamar Jackson. Otherwise Kyler is on a yes trajectory, all the other Sophmores+ are on a no (even though most will get paid anyways).

But other people do, you think this is not what the Rock had in mind when him and his partners purchased the XFL. People keep trying this sort of thing and at some point it will stick. If you look at basketball you went from no kid will ever skip the Ncaa so we change the age to 19 and get a extra year of free scouting. To now where multiple top 10 projected picks are either skipping the entire year, playing internationally or choosing the G league. And that is one year and people are taking the money over the NCAA. Football you have 3 years, if any alternative appears at all stable you are going to see a lot of kids taking 3 year deals instead of heading to the NCAA.
