HSC Qualifiers are to take place this weekend.
Qualified players earn travel support and a spot in the Group Stage.
Qualifiers will be played as single-elimination into double-elimination brackets. For EU, KR and NA (i.e. the regions with >1 qualifier slot) the double-elimination starts with the Ro16. For the other regions (with 1 qualifier slot) it starts with the Ro8.
After the qualifiers 14 additional players (6 from KR rankings, 6 from EU rankings and 2 from NA rankings) will get invited based on EPT points. Those players will sadly have to pay for their travel themselves.

Hello everyone.
My load currently is high and I am a bit stressed since we are so late due to various reason I do not want to further execute here. In the end we'll try to make the best of it. We changed the system so the qualifiers are for paid travel + hotel. That was the same as before - but we will have them first and after those we will fill the rest of the slots with the highest ranked EPT players by the connected region.
I increased NA slots to 4 as well since I believe the NA scene is right and currently deserves more than 2 slots. Please (help me) spread the word about qualifier dates / time and t hat invites happen after. Ill obviously also shoot messages to the players I invited before the systemchange.
I will create all the challonge brackets today so the signups are ready today LATEST.
Thanks for any help and understanding the bit of a rush.

I hope that first KR qualifier isn't indicative of who plans to participate... So many of the top KR players were missing and even a lot of the mid or low tier ones who you'd think would be looking for a chance to get paid travel didn't participate. I thought this HSC being during SC2's longest offseason ever would motivate more KR players to attend.

I dont think Maru and herO are playing in this HSC, and according to some source Dark cant leave KR due to pending military service but I personally believes that Dark just doesnt want to go (Cure is older than Dark but he can still play). With Bunny also not playing in the qualifier, and he has no team to cover for his travel expense, he might not be playing neither. That leaves us with "tier 2" player, which are still very good, but I think that means Serral or Clem should take this HSC handedly.

Nightmare qualified, beating Gumiho twice across the two days. Hopefully this means DH Atlanta wasn't a fluke and he can consistently play at decent level.

So Gumiho is the only KR that accept the invite? Is this period just a bad time for KR players to travel oversea or something, given it before the Xmas and all?

Its just late in the year. Either you are qualified for Katowice or you are not. HSC doesn't have the same prizemoney as Dreamhack and the non-qualified have to pay t hemselves. For most from KR, tahts too expensive

I'm mostly surprised players like Bunny/DRG/Ragnarok/Classic/Armani/Creator didn't even try to qualify for the free travel. Very odd to me. The top players like Maru/Dark/herO not showing up is unfortunate but not surprising.

Bunny and Creator are exhausted and didnt want to travel. Not sure about others

This is nothing against HSC team as a whole, but this has failed as a global premiere event TWICE this year. So next year, if ESL still run the EPT for SC2, the organizer need to get their damn mind more on this. HSC 21 playing during GSL playoff is an atrocious schedule conflict and should be sniffed out MONTHS in advance, instead of forcing player to either miss their GSL run or not able to play in HSC. That is unacceptable of a Premiere Global tournament in general and ESL should be ashamed for letting that happen.
And then this change to the invite/playoff system because of cost issue, which are in line with the change from ESL for doing the casting of DH Atlanta from the studio, is more like a poor planning and execution of the event. I understand that there have been things that out of the ordinary expectation this year (war, regression, ect.) but that is still no excuse for changing things weeks before the event and transfer all that risks onto the players. There is also the timing of this event, which are only 4 weeks after Atlanta and one week before XMas, which means some player (non-EU) cant join because of travel exhaustion/visa issue.
HSC is still a very fun offline event with lots of fan interaction, and I thought that the audience from HSC21 was WAY better than DH Valencia, but to make it as a Global Premiere Tournament, I think we need to make it so that players can have their best chance at making the events and provide the most competitive offline event possible. Hopefully we see these things tighten up if this is run again next season, actually lets hope that we HAVE this again next year first.

GSL conflict happened since GSL had to move out of their way because of Dreamhack. Our date was approved in 2020 already. This simply fell off - shouldn't happen but did. Nothing we could do there.
We usually never cover costs for everyone @ HSC so the previous time was a special and only possible because Shopify stepped in big time and even that big time sponsorship wasn't sufficient to cover it fully due to increased travel costs from COVID etc. My personal opinion: If travel should be covered, ESL needs to support to some extent otherwise its either the way we do now (split, paid and nonpaid) or not running the event at all. This has nothing to do with organisation of the event. I was way ahead of time in that position and it took forever to get a final answer.
In terms of traveling. Exhaustion and full schedule really isn't something we can consider. Our event has been run june/july and december for like 10 years now. While schedule for players is tight and I understand its exhausting, thats kind of the progaming life too. IF you want to compare this to CSGO this is still not nearly as saturated.
I am all for what you say: provide players with equal chances to get there but in the end as long as its not fully supported by the circuit this is an event run by a business. This never is an event that generates anything for us. If we get to +/-0 which we usually don't, then we are already happy. Asking us to cover every cost simply makes us unable to run the event.
Last but not least I'd prefer to go back to our roots without EPT circuit and have more freedom or be part of the circuit but get support for the travel. I think a lot of your criticism is justified but directed towards the wrong people. Did you criticize ESL for "only" providing travelsupport for qualified people? Atlanta (any any Dreamhack) with an open bracket only allows people that have the financial means to travel too. One time in US, one time in Europe. Its never perfectly fair.
my 2 cents

edit: to also add to this. Creator for example was really angry about the "invite non paid slots" before we changed. Then proceeded to travel to Atlanta and decide to not even play qualifiers cause he was exhausted. I don't think that is something that can be qualified as criticism to taketv but simply player choice
