![]() One thing that feels really special about Serral is how well-rounded he is. Almost every player is characterized by something--Stats is better at defense than offense, sOs is better at cleverness than mechanics, Zest is better at micro than macro, TY is better in the late game than the early and mid game, and so on. Even players that really are solid at every aspect of the game like Dark have tendencies we can latch upon--Dark likes aggression more than defense, roaches more than hydras etc. But with Serral it really feels that he's equally good at everything, equally favouring offense and defense, cheese and macro, early game and late game, and he doesn't even favour any particular composition. There are a few small differences like he's a bit more mechanical than clever, but even then he has smart builds. He's better at ZvP than ZvT, but how big the discrepancy is isn't obvious. I can't recall the last player we've had whose skill set has been so evenly distributed across the different aspects of the game.

But this tournament, Serral has shown that he can be very aggressive and close games when he wants. I would give him the edge considering the state of ZvP.

Love that we're opening with Has vs Zest xD for the team match. Given the weird format I could see it going either way. Serral's team appears to be stronger overall so I guess I'll go with them.

I think he's maybe the best ZvP player in the world currently, and none of the top Koreans seem to have figured out the other side of the matchup right now, so I kind of think he'll win 4-2/4-1.

I agree, Serral's ZvP is a thrill to watch. I always see Polt playing when I watch, where he always has a secondary army (i.e. strong enough to beat warpins, probably equivalent to a 3-4 medivac's worth of units army). But with the unique tools of the matchup, notably lurkers in the midgame and brood lords in the late game, Serral is able to elevate that sort of counterattacking, multipronged aggression to the next level. I feel like the games where Koreans copy this style and fail (outside of early game cheese) it's when the protoss is able to squeeze out 5-6 carriers or tempest tech before the BL push hits (I recall a few of Dear's and Stats' games). I haven't been watching enough late game Serral ZvP to compare his hive timing to these few games, but I imagine heavier lair play would punish over-eager stargate tech, and I seem to recall Serral's impeccable lair tech play, so it seems like he has this failure point covered. I think this should be a really interesting match. Serral has so much momentum and is currently riding the crest of his own innovations, but Stats' adaptability and solidity cannot be underestimated. I always remember the cross finals immediately after Dark's first SSL win, the one where he pulled out baneling drops, and seeing Stats having all sorts of micro-adjustments to his play e.g. leaving 3 stalkers at every base, slightly different simcity/compositions, and he avenged his SSL loss. I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this as well, but it would definitely require quite a lot of preparation that may be difficult in a weekend tournament like this...

I checked sc2unmasked and saw nobody at that MMR in GM or Masters, and no non-Dark/soO/Rogue anonymous zergs that could even be close. Probably just a mistranslation or Inno misspoke. He has had 7200 MMR on EU.

I feel the same way about Maru... he can cheese, he can macro, he can play mindgames and do trickery, can do insane multipronged harass or setup a deathpush at your front door.
