A labelled diagram of the female reproductive system, just so there's no confusion over which parts are being discussed.
I encountered an interesting read in the medical pages recently, and it's an amazing article about the human body. I'd like to share it with you here guys:
How bacteria in the vagina change during pregnancyOne thing that becomes more clear with each piece of research is that the human body is a hive of mostly harmless bacteria that live in any crevice they can reach while affecting their human host as little as possible. In some cases these bacteria can be very beneficial – preventing more dangerous bacteria from taking up residence in places like the stomach and throat. In some cases they can occasionally go rogue, get into places they shouldn’t be, and cause havoc. Despite the relatively safe and prosperous homes that the human body provides, living on it does have it’s downsides. As the body changes, grows and falls ill the bacteria are subject to seismological shifts in their living quarters. And for bacteria that live around the female reproductive areas, pregnancy represents a pretty major shift indeed. Just to clarify, bacteria do not actually live in the womb (if they get inside there that can go very badly wrong) but they do set up camp along the vagina and basically any areas of the reproductive system (and indeed the body) that can be reached safely from the outside. As well as protecting against fungal and other pathogenic infections simply by colonising the available space, the vaginal bacteria also actively help to decrease the pH inside the vagina, making it harder for other infections to set up. Killing off these bacteria (as anyone who has ever taken antibiotics to deal with cystitis will be aware) can lead to the fungal infection thrush, as without the bacteria in place the fungus can take over. In order to explore how the vaginal bacteria might change during pregnancy, researchers took 68 samples from 24 healthy pregnant women (between 18-40 confirmed weeks) and compared them to 310 samples from 60 non-pregnant controls. They isolated DNA from the vagina, sequenced it, and then organised it into different bacterial taxonomic groups. All the control women were non-menstruating at the time, and around half of them were taking hormonal contraceptives. Full details can be found in reference 1. Overall, pregnant women showed much less diversity in bacterial species and fewer colonies present, particularly in areas up near the uterus which were very sparse indeed. In both pregnant and non-pregnant women, colonies varied throughout the vaginal area, and the dominant species were Lactobacillus spp. Some particular bacterial species were found to be more prevalent in pregnancy, although the overall diversity was reduced. This snapshot of the vaginal bacteria flora as a changing landscape; affected by internal pH and decimated by oncoming pregnancy, is a fascinating one, showing a wonderful interaction between humanity and the bacteria that live inside them. But pregnancy doesn’t just involve changes in bacteria, it also comes with a baby! The womb where the foetus grows is a comfortable and sterile environment, and suddenly in a short space of time it is required to be forcibly pushed down a narrow bacteria-laden tube into a cold unforgiving world. In a fascinating (although rather underpowered) study of infants born by either by vaginal birth or C-section, researchers (reference 2) did indeed find a difference in the bacterial communities. Babies born through vaginal delivery had typical vaginal species such as Lactobacillus, Prevotella, or Sneathia on their skin, throat and gut while babies born through Cesarean had picked up species of skin bacteria (Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, and Propionibacterium). Furthermore while in adults there are different bacterial species in different places (skin, gut, vagina, etc.) in the newborns it was the same bacterial species everywhere. Given that they’d only just entered the world from a sterile environment this isn’t surprising, but it does raise interesting questions about how the different species find their way into the infant and start to flourish in their own little niches. Speaking as one of the many, many C-section babies out there I can’t say my method of birth had a huge impact on overall health, or indeed my relationship with bacteria! But what is clear is that bacteria are with us throughout our life, changing to match our bodies, and growing and fluctuating as we go through different stages of health. — Ref 1:Kjersti Aagaard, Kevin Riehle, Jun Ma, Nicola Segata4, Toni-Ann Mistretta, Cristian Coarfa, Sabeen Raza, Sean Rosenbaum, Ignatia Van den Veyver, Aleksandar Milosavljevic, Dirk Gevers, Curtis Huttenhower, Joseph Petrosino, James Versalovic (2012). It is proof how amazingly complex the human body and life is. Even at the biological level, there remains so much more to know about the basic functions and biochemical processes that the body undergoes.

Yeah, vaginas (and females in general) are amazing.

There has to be a reason that there are ten times as many vagina threads as penis threads. Virgins got the snatch on the mind much???

Not quite as interesting as the "cervical cycle" thread. The phrase, "fluid has become white and creamy" was used, I believe.

Some explanation or tl;dr for us non-scientists here?

You can't expect a community of young males to give a damn about the careful science of the thread, and ignore the fact that you're talking about vaginas.

This thread should live about 5 years in the hearts of TL. Please, mods, dont stop this thread.

I think at this point people are just trying to find anything to make a thread about.
I mean it's a General Forum sure, but maybe we should try to remember we're on a Starcraft site, I'm pretty convinced that most of the people that come to the site don't really want to read about vag bacteria during pregnancy..

I guess if we were nerds we could state the types of bacteria swe were born with to predict how we were birthed.
Alas, cool. Thats why babies dont get sick

tbh it was kind of a boring read for me

Are they ? The excretory system can work properly without penis/testicle/ovaries. I know that theoretically the urethra is part of the excretory system but i always thought the urethra is simply the "tube"... that is part of our genitals, but still.. do we give genitals full credit for peeing ?

Not for women they aren't. The urethra is separate from the vagina.
On topic: I love vaginas. This is an interesting article thought I don't think it warranted its own thread on TL.

Was an interesting read but the conclusion of the study felt very inconclusive. So you've discovered different strain of bacterias depending of the method of birth delivery...then what? Is there a better way of giving birth, are some bacterias more prone to cause disease, infections, complications, etc. Just feels incomplete.

Agreed, I did not pick up any implications from that read.
Are they trying to say that natural births provide newborns with a more diverse array of bacterias necessary for healthy living and development compared to C-sections?
I can see how that can be relevant or are they trying to explain the shift of bacteria from the vagina into other areas of the body being the cause of an increased risk of mortality thus explaining why there are still women dying during birthing?
Too vague... needs more research but interesting nonetheless

Yeah. I agree. Vaginas are pretty gross to be honest. Even though I'm heterosexual, I can't stand the sight of a vagina, nevermind the smell. All of these vagina threads are really uncomfortable. Not sure why I clicked on it. ;(

Vaginas are a hive. K, now for some blue waffles.

Actually, it surprised me he made a thread out of something completely logical (and known to almost everyone^^) at all... Yes, vaginal pH changes during pregnancy, that meaning not all bacteria survive. Yes, if you're born via C-section, you'll pick up different bacteria first since you're taking another way out O.o Would be interesting to know if female C-section babies have more vaginal problems (e.g. fungus) later on since they came in contact with the normal vag bacteria later, but that's not answered here; this thread is about the general "OHMYGAWDAVAGINAWITHBACTERIA!!!11" - thingy...

Killing off these bacteria (as anyone who has ever taken antibiotics to deal with cystitis will be aware) can lead to the fungal infection thrush, as without the bacteria in place the fungus can take over.
Childbirth can be demonstrated here as the baby moves down the ramp and is subjected to fungal growths and harmful bacteria.

So, theres now scientific women are dirty as the bible says. There should be a law in place to have us cut them up every time instead of letting them poison our babies?
I don't get the point of this thread, this doesn't seem to provide discussion for even right wing preachers.

Edit : actually thinking of what the article said, there are no bacterias inside the womb/vagina, but around. I'm afraid the title is wrong and misleading.

I'll add a tiny bit of info here. The bacterial population in the vagina is extremely important to ensure a normal pregnancy. A reduction in normal bacterial population can lead to the colonization by other species, which cause inflamation inside the vagina, this infection can then ascend through the birth canal, infecting the amniotic cavity or the baby, causing a multitude of bad obstetric results, mostly premature labor, with all it brings.
