It’s a good marketing slot, I hope they actually rig it a bit and emphasise the ‘show’ part of showmatch.
Well, not rig, but ‘hey guys here’s some money to show up, play some fun games eh?’ rather than a mini-tournament with big splits where folks go ruthless on it.
I’ve found as it’s such a new and unfigured out game that’s still changing, that good games can be actually pretty good, but bad games, well. Very bad.
I know there’s been a subsequent patch but some of the Celestial mirrors in the Tasteless tourney were among the worst RTS matchups to watch I think I’ve ever encountered.
In terms of these tournaments to publicise the game, I don’t think I’ve even seen half the units in the game showcased!

Really hate this trend of "talent"
There will be what 3 BoX series? 2 casting teams for that? We are living large under FG.
Plus a host and all that fancy stuff.

It's basically industry jargon for TV, where the people on camera are referred to as "talent." For whatever reason, it's become common in esports for that jargon to spill over to public facing communications, instead of using more readily understandable words like "commentators." I hate it as well!

I guess the Saudi Arabians are throwing a smattering of cash at Stormgate just in case it takes off? It's pocket change compared to the expenses of even SC2, let alone all the other games. The casters are already there, just gotta fly 4 players out there.

You get to get your foot in the door and be seen to support a new viable eSport and help kick it off, and if it doesn’t stick, well it’s pocket change.
I’m personally of the opinion that even SC2 is really only there for long-time history and prestige, give the whole thing a bit of legitimacy by association rather than anything that really makes much economic sense.
Also SC2 is the one eSport that was effectively run by ESL anyway, so it’s an easy transfer.
If that weren’t the case in a parallel universe, perhaps you see some BW too. But I think that’s more complicated given how that scene is structured.

Speaking of the actual game, looking forward to giving it a shot later.
How much hotkey customisation is possible at this stage?
|
You can customize keys based on a grid. So if you change Z (bottom row first column key), it changes every key on that slot. You also can't change modifiers. So, setting up a camera location is ctrl+ F1 for example. You can change F1 but not ctrl yet. There are also some hotkeys missing altogether, like jump to last alert or center camera on currently selected unit/building.

Unfortunate as given my hotkey setup this will be a bastard to play haha, most of that stuff is exactly what I’ve remapped and got used to.
Shift as camera keys to control isn’t too bad to be fair it’s not a bit change. My hotkeys for everything else are a bit strange, after playing Unreal Tournament for a bit I decided to build hotkeys around a mix of WASD, Qwerty and left some untouched.
Which sounds tricky to replicate, but hey. Still excited to give it a shot.
It’s somewhat ironic that I personally adopted actually quite similar hotkeys to what the Stormgate devs actually went with, and I like their approach but the locking stuff is gonna make it painful.
You’re pretty in the know, is there a reason they didn’t make them properly customisable on EA launch? Surely it is one of the easiest things to implement amongst genuine challenges, and show me 5 StarCraft players and I’ll show you 5 different hotkey setups:

They are there and they have accomodation anyway. Even if you pay all 6 like 50 bucks/ hour thats 300 bucks/ hour for a 3-4 hour event. Still cheap

Wait, the coop commanders cost 10$ each? How could I have missed the pricetag so much? How are the servers today?

It's apparently £10 which is ~$12.87.
A full 2.5x over SC2 content.
It wasn't advertised or talked about at all, it just popped up. I'm sure that they know that it's awful pricing (and a lot of us sure told them immediately), but i think it may be bad enough to actually lower revenue because people aren't willing to buy it and recruit a snowball of friends into that ecosystem - especially in the context of the game being much less developed, stable and performant than SC2 was when it sold £4 commanders every few months.
In particular there is a months old bug which causes everything on the map to stop working and the game to become unfinishable when the game performance drops too low due to too many units being out. It's happening on a huge fraction of co-op games, that sort of thing just did not fly in SC2.

In my opinion, this is not “the future of RTS”.
I did not pledge even 1 dollar to this game or its studio, even though I heavily considered investing at the time of the kickstarter.
I feel sorry for whomever did, and can understand their pain, frustration, delusion. I was about to fall into that trap.
What changed my mind was that what they had released at the time, defacto, was but a glorified shadow of real great Blizzard RTS titles, that captured our generation and made us dream, gave us great moments, great dreams, great hopes, great times.
The future of RTS will be the future of RTS, and when a triple AAA title will come out, you will feel it in every bone, in every fiber of your being, you will see it, own it, and acknowledge it, and worship it.
This is just water under the bridge.
To give some credit to it, I feel like they have cool resource names.
That is about all the compliments I can honestly give, other than seeying a field of broken promises and empty dreams
