Apex Legends is a hero based Battle Royale made by Respawn Entertainment - the same guys that made the awesome Titanfall 1 & Titanfall 2 games.
While this game doesn't have the wall running of it's predecessors (yet???) it does inherit great gun play, beautiful environments and smooth mobility, you can still climb most hurdles. Out of all the BR's I've played, including Fortnite, this game runs AMAZING.
This game is Free to Play - only cosmetics are purchasable but you can earn them all freely in game just by playing. Each hero has 3 abilities. A passive, an active on a short cool down and an ultimate on a long cool down.
Runs on the Source Engine but you wouldn't know it unless you did your research. I'm not used to basically playing a MOBA hero in a BR but it works.
Winning is all dependent on communication because you can't drop by yourself - you go in teams of 3. My first game nobody had a mic so our coordination was terrible. Died about half way through.
2nd time playing my team had mics and we all coordinated our abilities awesomely and ended up winning.
I secured our win with a really awesome ability on my hero - he can drop shields and call in an airstrike. So I dropped this big dome shield on top of my team and called in the airstrike at the same time and murdered the other 3 teams because the circle had shrunk so small that they couldn't avoid the attack. It earned me MVP of the match as well =p
The game is really fun and they have a bunch of neat mechanics like being able to move and shield yourself when you are down. Which means your team mates can use you for cover while they deal with your murderer. It is a neat idea that takes some of the punch out of sniper rifles and long range combat if the other team is on point and protecting each other. Like Titan Fall, there is just a lot of smart stuff in this game. And it uses all the Titan Fall weapons(no smart pistol, aka trash gun, RIP), which are all great. Even the god damn triple tap.
Just remember, sliding is faster than running because you got a rocket strapped to your butt.
It has it's moments, I have played a few games but Battle Royale type game just aren't my thing. Wish they had a King of the Hill type battles. It doesn't help that there is only 3 useful characters out of the 8.
I'm pretty bad at BR Shooters in general. Got some Top 10 finishes at PUBG and Fortnite but no chicken dinner for me. Is there some sort of MMR and how good is solo Q? I hate to be playing against some Shroud level players :/
All EA games have some match making systems with hidden MMR. Titan Fall was pretty good at not matching you with completely savage players. Though that game was also uniquely savage because it was so god damn fast. This one will likely have something under the hood as well. Though considering how important team mates are, it will be interesting to see how that aspect factors into people's rank.
This game seems okay. I probably prefer Blackout slightly more because this game feels pretty barren from the reduced player count. Would love a solo option but this game is obviously designed for squads so eh.
It's okay, I'm probably just getting bored of BR games in general.

Except the chars super is one that anybody can use. I could argue that should be the case for the unique skill.

Are you talking about the zip line super or the bloodhound super? Both are very good. I have had great luck with all of the characters so far.
Pretty fun game, got 3 wins in around 50 games or so. Have some performance problems at 1440p though. When looking at different areas fps can vary from 50-130, this is with lowest possible settings. Hopefully they can work on optimization, but it's source engine and big area so not sure how much they can do.
A lot depends on teammates though when playing pubs, something which is a lesser factor in other BRs with solo modes.

How is that a catch? its still free to play and lootboxes dont matter at all. and even so they still give you a shitload of them for free until level 50.....thats not a catch, mate.

i've made pessimistic assumptions with 0 loot boxes after level 100 and the battle pass costing $10 USD. Even with me taking the 'negative side' where EA/Respawn is unclear ... the revenue model still seems reasonable to me.
Tried it and it sure has some interesting additions, which are missing in other current BR titles, the 'dumbed-down' inventory with each picked-up item only taking up one slot is something I really like, plus there aren't too many different weapons to choose from while still maintaining some variety through addons. Firefights seem to last a bit longer than in other comparable games, which I generally prefer, but in return a lot of the weapons don't exactly 'feel' powerful.
Can't say I like the class-system, although they tried to keep it simple here, as well, with only two active abilities and one passive, it's just not my cup of tea regarding FPS in general. As far as matchmaking goes, forcing a third team mate upon a premade duo often feels atrocious, I'd rather prefer the uphill battle instead of having to cope with a random mate most of the time. When it comes to MTX, the skins in this game are so laughably bad, but I really think that's a good thing, because it maybe leads players to realize they should focus on gameplay instead of cosmetics.
Overall I think they've made really nice additions improving team play like auto-following your 'jumpmaster', the pinging system or having little features like billboards showing the currently leading squad, but for me personally, the game is too 'arcade-ish' in nature and at the end of the day it's still a BR game, so it won't hold my interest for long.
“…We decided to make this game. Not to be throwing EA under the bus, but this wasn’t the game they were expecting. I had to go to executives, show it to them, and explain it and…not convince but more, ‘Hey, trust us! This is the thing you want out of us.’ […] They had no hand in development or anything about this game.
Yeah I feel like this game is validating for Respawn.
These people are the minds behind the CoD:MW1 and MW2 days of Infinity Ward, and as wonderful as Titanfall 1 & 2 each were in their own ways, they never caught fire the way Modern Warfare did.
To see them really disrupt the most popular FPS market again with this game really feels great. I can't wait to see what they continue to do as a studio after the financial stability that this title will bring them. Hopefully EA doesn't make the same mistakes Activision did with these folks.
There are just a lot of good design decisions. The folks at Respawn played the game with each other for a month without voice chat and with place holder names to refine down the tagging system. That is just good game design, but one that can’t be done in most development houses that won’t give the team the time to do it. And the smart decision to build in an always accessible “thank you” button.
And there are other smart decisions that are small. Like the smoke launcher has the smoke turns up to 11 and then they doubled it just to make sure no one could see shit. The slide is really good and makes it easy to aim while zipping down a hill. The knock down shield is just a cool idea to give players some level of control even when they are down. And the respawn ability by using peoples banners just makes for amazing stories if a team can pull it out. So much of this game is smart and they haven’t even started adding stuff.
Just downloaded Apex Legends and am about to play the training. I've never played a battle royale game before, nor have I ever watched gameplay of one, but hopefully this turns out to be fun
I also had my first 15 minutes with the game today. The overall feel of the game is nice but don't expect the tutorial to do anything for you. Instead of hunting or scavenging for loot, landing and moving as a team and showcasing abilities it just fukken teaches you how to move with WASD and aim/shoot. What a complete waste of time. I am not new to shooters, I am new to the battle royale genre FFS. Just about the only good thing it teaches you is that you can collect dog tags and call people who died back in, which is a unique defining feature of this specific game.
Everything else you'll have to learn the hard way through fucking up other people's online experience as you go along with live matches. Needless to say on my 1st match I got killed before I found a weapon within 30s of landing.

Yeah I am in the same boat as you. No experience with BR, not much experience with FPS games, even. Right now my strategy is to avoid people as long as possible and just explore the map and experiment with items.
One thing you CAN do in the tutorial is try every weapon (I think it's every weapon) to get a feel for them.
I wish they had some weapon mods and stuff in Training mode so you can get used to them. Otherwise this game is great. After playing about 10 rounds I gotta say, I like a lot of the things they did and don't have any big dislikes yet.
I'll continue playing this at least until Anthem is released, maybe further.
If you guys wanna play around together, I would totally be up for it. I'm a really nice person and really bad at shooters though ^^' That's why I mostly play Lifeline, so at least I can help other ppl kill shit

cool strat! i'm bad too.. and i play as Lifeline as well.

yes, i wish there were some kind of open target shooting sandbox where we could experiment for as long as we want with all weapons and add ons at our disposal.
Also, in OW they have robot dummies that shoot at you. This would be good for experimenting with Armour.
This is been great fun, I can't wait for the cross play functionality to be added. Hopefully Sony isn't trying to make this a dick measuring contest as well and block PS4 out of it like they've done before.
As much as I am not a fan of the arcade-y bullet sponges that the characters are it makes for a forgiving gameplay that keeps it from getting frustrating when you have to battle with inferior weapons and maybe a man down or being surprised. Combat reminds me a lot of Black Ops 3 with the slide and guns churning through bullets at incredible pace. Movement is so nice and responsive and engagements are lots of fun especially because the bleed out times are longer and some abilities can really turn the tide. It always feels like you can turn a fight around if you get a moment to think about the next moves.
Micro-transactions seem completely pointless to me. The skins aren't very noticeable and there is just so much in terms of all the quips that I wonder how the sales are. Hopefully good enough because I'm really enjoying the game, good fun with few friends or even just solo-queueing as the ping system makes at least basic team-work rather easy.

The Morale Instance JimmyJRaynor supports an EA game. Shouldnt you stick to Indi games only? How is your war against big mean companies going?
Why is an EA game popular? Shouldnt it be hated and boycoted by default?
So I was finally able to play yesterday and I had a lot more fun than I expected. I was only going to play for an hour, but that turned into 2 and I had to really force myself to quit. Hell right now I really want to play the game!
The gunplay is good and the abilities are fun to use. I do like not having fall damage and I enjoyed the squad system a lot more than I expected. Playing with randoms has been great so far, easy to communicate and been a blast. Respawn did a fantastic job with their ping system, it's actually amazing at just how good it is making allies who don't use a mic useful still. I applaud them on that and pretty much everything.
Hopefully they continue to update the game with new weapons/maps and I can see this being popular for a long time (I know there is a roadmap, but it doesn't give a lot of detail).
I'll tell you what. Hemlock with a blue barrel and stock and above in single fire mode just hits ON POINT if you just pause half a second between each shot. No recoil. Shreds people at a decent mid range even with just a 1x optic. (I prefer the 1x-2x blue optic myself)
I just recently tried out the spitfire as well. You load a purple magazine into that bad boy and at least a blue barrel and stock and you can just go to town on people at mid-long range with 60 bullets. I wiped a 3 person squad with just 1 clip the other day as they tried to find cover.
Another favorite is the R-99 with the digital threat scope. I like to play Bangalore - Smoke enemy team - run between them and light them up. Smoking yourself and sniping with a Kraber is also a lot of fun. =)
This game is fun. I win about 1 out of every 10 games. Which isn't great but it's nice to win often enough.
Just had a super fun experience I wanted to share.
Me and my two random guys had a pretty rough early game fighting a team but came out alright going into Round 3. Still 8 squads left. Find decent loot, etc.
Round 3 ring kinda shafts us, forced to relocate. Caught in transition by a squad on either side. Pathfinder - the guy that can make Ziplines for his team, punches us a hole out to a cliff way above us. We lose 1 member off the line as he's shot down. I managed to recover his banner and re-attach to the zip line in mid air. Was fucking awesome.
I'm Bangalore so I can use smokes and stuff. I smoke our position so we can make an escape - trying to run to a respawn beacon to get our buddy back alive - run into ANOTHER team. Smoke out - retreat into nearby buildings. We hunker down as the other 3 squads all start having a shootout. This lures the other 2 remaining squads at this point to the area. This giant 6 way Mexican stand off begins.
My buddy Pathfinder and I are holding the building down tight, covering the stairs from the top and bottom pretty well. Suddenly Round 5 starts and there is no way in hell we are going to make it before the Ring murders us or another team catches us. Pathfinder drinks an ultimate accelerate that happens to be in this building. Like a fucking blessing from God himself. He runs to the roof and blasts his Zipline as far as it can go. We fucking James Bond, guns blazing, down his Zipline to safety. It just so happens that the other teams were so busy fighting - they didn't realize the Ring closing until it was too late. The only way out before death was to run into the small choke between two mountains. Right were Pathfinder and I were already setting up camp.
It was hilarious watching 3 squads running and fighting each other as they came towards us as we were lighting them up. One squad started running back further into the Ring. One Squad just didn't have enough HP and started falling. The last Squad kept charging at us and actually made it into the safe spot. That's when I threw my ultimate - an Air Strike. Good bye Squad.
The other Squad that ran back into the Ring tried their best to run AROUND a mountain - they must have had lots of heals but eventually we got the win as they ran out of supplies.

I agree with that, I had very little idea as to what to do in the game besides look for items and I feel like it would be much better if I had a tutorial that taught battle royale concepts at a general level. I honestly don't really want to play anymore because it's a team game and I'd just be dragging my two teammates down like I did the few games I played
One interesting experience I had was I tried using my mic and this guy told me to stop talking and I thought he was being a dick, but it turns out my brand new mic is just messed up, so at least I haven't been actually flamed yet
I had a few bad games in a row and then one game where I got gang-banged by a full team before I could pick up a weapon, so I raged and was ready to quit for good.
But then the next game my team stuck together and we did some good work so I'm gonna stick with it hahaha
Who cares? Just have fun with the random guy. We had one guy rage because we didn't already have 500 hours played on a week old game. He left. Me and my random pubbie decided to play Metal Gear Solid and not use weapons, only healing items. We ran around the map giggling like school girls and made Final 3.
Or play with friends. If you have no friends. Add me. I'll be your friend. My name on Origin is just PsyonicReaver
Yes, this game totally needs an open MMR system and ranking to improve its players behavior. Because that totally makes people play better and doesn’t create negative social dynamics in a team game.
They can have a skill based match making system, but we don’t need some try hard esports bullshit in a brand new game. Let folks chase personal achievements and goals, rather than some leader board.
I think you can (and should) skip the MMR, except maybe some loose behind the scenes matching, but I wouldn't mind like a behavior score or something and let match making pair up people with similar behavior scores.
The game desperately needs a gun range though. In something like Fortnite it wouldn't be a big deal because you can do things like drop hot for practice, shoot guns at nothing, or just play around with low tier guns. But in a team game I don't want to let my teammates down by doing that sort of random stuff.
At least you can play Lifeline and bring some marginal utility just by surviving until you get your ultimate.

One out of 4 games some tryhard guy leaves the game instantly when they see that me or the other guy is a potato. This is depressing
When a friend and I queue as 2 and get a random 3rd, they often leave early after going down (even if they're still revivable) or splitting up from us on the drop or whatever. It happens. And we've won games as 2 also. I don't mean that as a brag, there's just so much shit that can happen and different ways to play if you feel like it, that being down a man can still lead to some epic results (and more exciting!). It's the nature of BRs. The number of games where I drop as a full group of 3 friends and we get wrecked within a minute is probably comparable to the number of games where just me and 1 other can get top 3 or better. I've learned to embrace it, rather than get salty at every game I die young.
Also I think there might be some very soft kind of matchmaking, even if that's not visible to the player. I don't like the idea of seeing an actual rating or tier on each player in a BR game.
Completely anecdotal but so far my pub experience has actually been awesome. As a completely terrible fps player, and its super obvious to my random teammates as well, I've been helped out. Some have gone out of their way to get my dogtags out of a storm even under enemy fire!
Fun game with my friends too. Idk how much i'll actually play this game because Im terrible at the gunplay without a wingman and you get into fights so infrequently its hard to improve. Real feature I want is a small 3v3 arena mode or 3v3v3v3 with respawns and some objective. This way you can get into the action quickly and I can learn how to shoot these silly guns haha.
Game runs smooth and looks great, combat mechanics seems fun, but this game is plagued by a complete lack of MMR or match making system which results in casual baddies like me for the most part getting wrecked by people who have clearly been playing PubG/Fortnite and are well practiced and honed for this type of game play.

I understand the need to get better and to practice and have fun. I also find it easy to let losses go in this game and not get salty, but there should be some way to separate the bads from the goods so the goods can play against other goods and the bads can be bad with eachother in the kiddie pool.
Plus like the poster for the quote said, alot of the time people get extremely toxic when they see you haven't done anything with your life besides grind out 1K Apex Legends games after grinding out 10K fortnite/Pubg games.
You guys are absolutely right about the "leagues will get ppl to be more toxic" I didn't think that far ahead.
Still, like the guys above me stated, I just want to play with other potatoes and have fun missing all my shots and do zero damage XD
To the problem of tryhards leaving instantly: Mostly the second guy will leave soon after and I'm standing alone Played 2-3 games just sneaking around alone (playing Bloodhound helps with that a lot ^^) and trying to get to top 3.
One fun story: Our Jumpmaster did go directly to the supply ship where I killed 2 guys with melee attacks. My highest kill count in a game so far :D
@PsionicReaver Will add you this weekend when I have time
EDIT: Another sad story: I was on the team of the Champion and was ultrahyped! Alright let's do this. Show this guy what you can do! Well, Champion did split mid-air (Me and the other guy where going to his ping at the edge), goes into middle of the map, kills 3 ppl, dies and leaves...
This game is really growing on me, more I've played the more I want to play. If there is someone who wants to play on PS4 I'm down to queue together, not super good at shooters by any means, PM me for the PSN name.
Got a few wins now, mostly been carried hard by my team mates. Just getting around different guns has taken a while, what I really enjoy is how powerful the grenades feel. There is actually benefit of lobbing nades into a shack someone is hiding in and the trajectory shown allows you to get them in through windows etc very nicely. Allows you to force people out of good positions especially towards the endgame.
Also for those having issues with random team mates and them not playing for the team or dropping early etc. It is just the same as dota or any other game in that. Random people in the internet don't always think the same way as I do and I'm much happier when I realise that. If I get upset about random person in the internet not adhering to my expectations I just try to take a break, celebrate it when it's fun but don't get angry if people play games differently, there is room for all of us to our thing.
Hey guys, I know this game has a lot of different issues concerning crashes but I cant even get the game to start for some reason... It loads the game and after that just never opens it but jumps back to Origin... anyone know whats up about that? A friend of mine has the same problem... Much appreciated!
Fun game for sure, especially with people you know. But my only win so far was with randoms. We hardly pinged and kind of synchronized somehow. It's fun to play with strangers and see them take risks to help each other out. Hoping for one or two more maps.

I rolled back my nvidia GPU drivers to a previous version and I haven't crashed since, I'm not sure if it's definite but it seems to have worked.

Confused as to why anyone would like this game. Fortnites great, blacksite is good, given cs is such a solid game, PUBG is decent. This? Everytime i play i start to fall asleep.

I'm deth2munkies on Origin if anyone wants to play. Game is fun but kind of shit when playing solo, way more fun with a group of 3. I never really liked Fortnite and tried to get into Blackout, but the movement options and gunplay in this make it so much more engaging.

This game I just play and time flies by.
I don't have to force myself to play Starcraft , I LOVE IT!! I don't like getting smashed, but the wins are such a rush! I'm a big SC2 fan.
With Apex, if I make the top 5 teams I feel like I've won. But still not the same rush as winning on the SC2 ladder.
Is the new character launching with S2? Or still on the horizon
My friends and I still play now and then, once or twice a week. I think the game's still solid at it's core, there's just a few things they seem loathe to make changes to, or rather they just take forever to do so. Not just "rawr buff this nerf that" stuff, that's more subjective / data driven, but little improvements and quality of life stuff.
