Alrighty, so after getting nostaligic reading through the board game thread a day or so ago, i also realized how there were a bunch of board games that people mentioned that i have not yet had the privlage to enjoy. This got me to thinking about my favorite type of non-video type game, card games, and how perhaps there were some that myself and many others have not yet heard of, or played. I will list some of my favorite games, and i hope people will do the same. Please provided as best a discription of the game you can, and also a link to the rules if you do not want to write them all out. Here are some of my favorite games:
52 Card (4 suit) basic card deck Games: HEARTS!!!!
This is a classic four player game that just uses a normal deck of cards. It is very easy to learn how to play, and is great for something relaxing with friends, family or perhaps 2 couples. The game may be easy to learn, but it is one of those ones that it is still hard to win, unless you are very good. Here are some rules i found that should explain it to people who have never played before. http://www.toycrossing.com/hearts/basic-rules.shtml
Texas Hold em
This game needs no introduc... Rules: http://boardgames.about.com/cs/poker/a/texas_rules.htm This is obviously a game that takes GREAT skill to be great at, but i still love to play it even though i am terribad.
Idiot
This is a game that i just recently learned how to play last summer. It is not the most tricky or difficult game, but it is one i enjoy for a good time. You could easily teach this to your younger children, or old grandparents and have fun with them Rules: http://www.idiot-cardgame.com/rules
Egyptian Rat Screw
This might be my favorite of the ones menioned, just becuase i get crazy competitative with this game. I mean i have gotten in a few fights with people over this on who slapped first. This game only takes about 10 minutes to learn, and is an instant classic. If you can get people to shut up for that long and actually try the game, they will love it. Rules: http://www.waste.org/~oxymoron/cards/ratscrew.html This website has a lot of extra rules that can be fun, but i reccomend playing it easy at first, and mixing it up once you get the hang of it.
Personal Deck Card Games: I was not sure how to label these, but i think it gets the point across. These games require you to have a certain deck of cards for this game only.
Apples to Apples
This is another very common game but I think i have to bring it up just incase someone out there has not played it. This game is very fun to play with a lot of people, but i can assure you that it will get pretty noisy and crazy. I played this game all the time growing up, and I promise that it is worth it to try it out. http://www.com-www.com/applestoapples/applestoapples-rules-official-basicset.html
BANG!
This game i first learned about last year, and i actually like it a lot. It took a little getting used to, but playing this game (especially with the expansion pack) is a lot of fun. The theme of this is an old west town, where one person is sheriff and the rest are either assigned to kill the sheriff (outlaws) protect him (deputy/vice sherrif) or kill everyone (renegade). I think only 6 can play with out the expansion, but it is super fun! Rules: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bang! (best rules i could find)
5 crowns:
The only reason i put this game in here is because my parents are in love with this game. For those who have played gin rummy before, this should be a real easy game to understand and play. It is, in fact, just a oversized gin. This game is one where you make sets and runs (hehe i said runs) to put all of your cards down. It does not take too much skill, but rather a sharp mind and eye, and a lot of luck. Play this game if you just want to have an easy game that you can teach to a lot of people (less than 10) Rules: http://www.setgame.com/fivecrowns/rulesfivecrowns.htm
Now i know i left off a lot of great games, but that is where you came in. If i had to find and write about every great card game there is then i would be here for at least 4 more minutes. So lets here them, what are your favorite games??
+ Show Spoiler [BONUS GAME] +POKEMON!!!!!!!!!! I never actually played the official way, so i have like no experience, but i feel like i should be sent to jail for not having included this. Oh and i had a holo Chrizard, so i am a total boss!!!!
Edit: fixed a picture
EDIT 2:
I will add games that people recommend here: please post as much as you can about it,a dn why you like it so people can understand more about it:

Magic the Gathering changed my life positively.

I never played that, so i wanted someone to share more about that game then i ever could have.

I make my living playing Hold'em so that's obviously a good game.
I also really used to love playing Bluff. I'm not 100% on the rules anymore but basically the objective was to get rid of all of your cards. And the rules were probably similar to Uno in what cards you could place (same denomination or same color) - only that you can lie about what card you're playing (you place them face down in the middle in a pile, one per guy and turn). If someone else checks you up and they're right you need to pick up all the cards. If they're wrong they draw 3 new cards. We also played with drop and multiple-stack cards (ie. dropping cards on the floor, putting some in your pocket, etc... and placing multiple cards in the middle instead of one as you should. Got away with some sick 6+ cards a few times lmfao). I used to love the "8 of clubs" 3 times in a row, when someone finally checks the third time, boom, it actually is 8 of clubs.

I play Bridge with my family a lot on holidays. It's kind of a tradition now.

I liked egyptian rat screw, but the problem was that there were always the jerks that would slam their fist down on the cards as hard as they could so that if you wanted to win, you would have to get hurt.
|
OMG Egyptian war is so fun. I have no idea why you call it "Egyptian rat screw", because that makes no sense.
And like somebody else said, mention Yu-Gi-OH.
And Big 2. Seriously, how can you forget Big 2.

PYRAMID: AKA GET DRUNK QUICK WHILE HAVING FUN!
Standard deck of 52 cards, no jokers. Recommended 4+ players.
Place 15 cards face down in a pyramid formation (one on top, two below, three below, ect). Deal the deck equally.
Flip the first card. If anyone has the same card as that they put it on top and delegate one (1) drink to any other player, more than one card of the same type can be played at once. Flip the next card on the second row, if anyone has that card they can delegate two (2) drinks to any other player, drinks can be split (ie, player 1 can give one (1) to player 2 and one (1) to player 3). Once all the cards have been flipped on the fifth row, find who has the most cards left in there hand. They are now on the "Bus" (if two or more are equal, they are both on the bus).
The Bus
Shuffle the deck. Lay out four cards face down. Flip the first card. The player on the bus now guesses whether or not the card next to it is higher or lower (ace high). If they guess right, then they guess if the next card is higher or lower than the card that was just flipped. This is a great, easy game that gets you drunk quite quickly! GL HF
Edit: Changed the amount of cards dealt to each player from 5 to the whole deck, can't exactly remember on this point (usually too drunk to remember...).

Egyptian Rat Screw is by far one of the funnest games (read: not just cards) I have ever played. You can waste hours on it without even noticing. Simple, fast paced, and almost completely random, it's a total blast.

I've had a few russian friends teach me how to play Durak, and it's probably the best card game I've played. It's the only one I know that involves attacking and defending between players.

Oh this! We played this quite often in high school. We also played hearts, 500, bridge, tarock, and of course magic the gathering.
Fun times XD

For fun games, don't forget Spoons.
Gin rummy is a simple game that's pretty fun.

^^ That game is so much fun! Here's some other games you can play with traditional cards:
By far my favorite game to play with friends. Unfortunately it's only a four player game, but it's still tons of fun (I'm from the Midwest US by the way)! Organizing little tournaments can be pretty fun, since you always play on a two man team: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euchre (There's a variation called "Double Deck Euchre, too"
There's another favorite of mine what I called Chinese Poker, but my google search has come up with another game, maybe someone can help me. Basically you deal out all the cards to however many people you have (you can play with 2 decks if there's a lot of people). The person with the 3 of clubs leads by putting down one or multiple cards that the next player has to "beat." For example if he puts down a 3, the next player has to put down a 4 or higher (2s are higher than aces btw). The next person in line then has to put down a card higher than that, and so on and so forth going around clockwise in the circle of players. If nobody can beat the card, or nobody WANTS to beat the card, the person with the "winning" card gets to lead the next round. (so if a 2, the highest card in the game for some reason, is played, it's automatically starts a new round with the person who played the two leading). There's a trick however! I mentioned that one could play multiple cards instead of just one (this is where the poker part comes in). I have the option of playing doubles, triples, straights (of three or more), two pairs, two triplets, ect. (no full houses or flushes though) as well. If I play two 5s, the next person will have to play a double that is higher than fives (two 9s or something like that), and that pattern continues around the circle until no one can or want's to play over it (you can always pass, btw). If I play a 5, 6, 7 and 8 as a straight, then the next person has to play a higher straight. (7,8,9,10 would do the trick, or 10, J, Q, K). BUT I cannot beat a 4 card straight with a 5 card straight, nor can I beat a double with a triple. It ALWAYS has to match the pattern of the card that was led (this is why being able to lead is really important. If you have a really great straight, you won't be able to play it until you manage to get the lead). Once you get rid of all of your cards you win! (you can also set rules so that the loser of the previous round has to give up his or her cards to the winner in the next round, and the winner trades them for his/her worst cards. It makes things a little more entertaining)
Have only three players and can't come up with any good 3 player games? Try this one! It's a little complicated, but veteran card players should pick it up pretty quick: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinochle (I play 3 handed pinochle most of the time, scroll down a bit, you'll see it)
Euchre too boring? Too easy? Doppelkopf is a game I picked up in Germany that's kind of like a mix between Euchre and Pinochle, but has a bunch of other crazy rules (a lot of them optional) Might be kind of overwhelming if you don't play cards that much: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doppelkopf
Those are my favorites, but I have a bunch more,
There's a game called "King Mau" or "Mau Mau" but I'm not allowed to talk about the rules
Another one that I remember being really fun was some Russian one also played with a standard deck. (The title was pronounced "Daka" or "Dacha" or something like that, and I was told it meant "Idiot.") If someone could help me out with, that'd be great, because it was a fantastic game. EDIT: Maybe it was "Durak"?
Other than that, i enjoy "Rummy", "Speed", and "BS". "Crazy eights" is great for little kids, too, it's kinda like Uno, except you don't have to pay for fancy cards. There's also Double Solitare, played like normal Solitare, except with two people sharing the middle piles. Whoever has the most in the middle wins.
If you're a little inexperienced, beginners find "Go Fish", or "Memory" quite enjoyable
If you have a toddler, 52 card pick up will be the only thing you will be playing.
|
Euchre Pinochle Spades Rummy Bridge Golf Spoons (If you haven't played this with 6-8 people, holy shit so much fun) Canasta
All games I played growing up. Euchre is too much fun.
|
Spoons is a great game to play with a good sized group, especially if some of your friends have terrible reflexes.
How the hell does one play bridge? There's a daily bridge column next to the comics in the newspaper i read, and it sounds incredibly complicated. Is it just because of the jargon?

Durak is amazing! So is Pit, if anyone's heard of that.

What about Hearts and Spades? >_<
EDIT: LOL, I blame my tiny mouse's wheel button... Sorry, must've overscrolled. Anyways, there's still the asian version of Hearts where you can shoot the moon in many ways: collecting all hearts only, all hearts + Q of spades/J of diamonds, or all hearts + both Q and J. Also 10 of clubs is -50 if you have no points, but doubles the value if you do.

I used to play that at lunch all the time throughout my middle school years. We called it bullshit and you deal out the entire deck and then the cards play in sequence. You take the entire deck if you're lying and get caught, and if they're wrong they take it instead.
My family also played a lot of Canasta awhile back. Whenever we'd visit my dad's parents and grandparents there would be a massive canasta game or two with the entire family. You can google the rules if you're interested, but it revolves around two standard 54 card decks and then getting a "canasta" of cards by getting 7 of them. 2s and jokers are wild and pure canastas are worth more than ones with wilds. Once somebody discards their entire hand the hand is over and score is taken based on what was played onto the table and subtracted based on what is still in everyone's hand. You cannot discard out until you have one or two canastas on the table though, so there are some mind games where you can quickly drop a canasta and go out immediately to catch your fellow players with a bunch of cards in their hand still. It's kinda complicated to pick up, but I used to play on Yahoo awhile back ^_^ Maybe I should play some more. You can play with 2-x players with teams of however many you like although 4 or 6 players with teams of two seems like the best methods. You might want to a third deck if you're playing with 6 or more players though.

The only card game I've played a lot with my friends or competitively was the Star Wars Customizable Card Game. In the heyday of CCGs it was second only to Magic in popularity, and while the game has been out of print for about 10 years now, there is still a volunteer organization that runs tournaments, maintains the rules, and creates new "virtual cards" to keep the game fresh. A pretty complex game, but fun as well, especially if you enjoy star wars.
The official site and forums can be found here: The SWCCG Players Committee
You can find info there on tournaments, new cards, decks, rules, etc.
|
I have been recently playing Cribbage and o my is it awesome, especially with a home made board. If your last place you have to write your name on the back of the board so everyone knows you suck lol.
|
Gin rummy is my personal favorite besides poker. Of all the rummy variants it seems to be the most skill dependent, at least when playing "Hollywood" scoring. It's sad that playing over the internet is a bit tough as any serious games suffer from rampant use of "helper" programs that show what cards have been played/are remaining and other such things that while the perfect human player could theoretically know, most of us mere mortals could never dream of recalling perfectly.
All that being said as a live game it is an incredibly good gambling game as the point system is easy to adapt to wagering, and since it is a two player game it's a good backup when you don't have enough for a poker game.
|
Pitch is the greatest card game ever invented. It's especially fun with teams.

This thread makes me smile. I absolutely love good card games/board games and over the years at family gatherings and the such, we'd always play tons of card games and a huge variety of card games. The game that we all knew the best was Euchre, which isn't too surprising as you won't find many people in the state of Michigan that don't know how to play it. Would there be any interest in a card game night from anyone here? In the past over at a couple of other sites, I hosted a weekly/bi-weekly card game night where we would play for a couple of hours a different card game each week and I tried to find games that people didn't know.
Below I'll list what we did for games that were playable online and I'll give a few other games that I personally enjoyed. This list isn't exhaustive of the ones I've played or know.
Euchre Spades Oh Hell!- pretty fun game where you try to predict the exact number of tricks that you can take in a hand. Side note: If you are looking for a crazy game that is a ton of fun based on this concept, find the card game Rage. Essentially it's the same as Oh Hell! except there are cards that literally change the trump suit, cards that eliminate trump, cards that reward bonus points, cards that deduct points, etc.. Tons of fun with a number of people! In each hand you also reduce the number of cards you play with. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rage_(card_game) for more info. 3-5-8 Texas Hold'Em Hearts Agurk(Cucumber) - Awesome card game that doesn't take much time. http://www.pagat.com/last/agurk.html. Used to be able to play this on playok.com, but they sadly got rid of it.
Barbu - Want a game that involves a ton of different games in one? Try this one. http://www.pagat.com/compendium/barbu.html. Gin Rummy Rummy 500 Cribbage - Truly a classic game. I remember playing this in elementary school all the time!
Whist - Bridge without the bidding. Minnesota Whist - Slightly more complicated than Whist. http://www.pagat.com/whist/minwhist.html Bid Whist/52 Card Bid Whist - Slightly more complex than Minnesota Whist. If you can play those three games, you've got a good head start at getting good at Bridge. Pinochle
Invented Game To Try:
1. Concerto - A really easy to pick up partnership game that just involves a normal deck of playing cards. The idea is that your partner and yourself are trying to form the best four poker hands you can from your hand while playing one card at a time. http://www.davidparlett.co.uk/oricards/concerto.html
Other Fun Commercial Card Games That I'd Recommend:
1. Phase 10 - Really simple game by heart, but a lot of fun with the right group of people. http://www.natlassoc.org/fun/games/phase10/phase10r.htm
2. Rook - Another bidding/trump card game. http://www.pagat.com/kt5/rook.html
3. Mu - For those more advanced card game players. In this game you can make a number or a color trump, and they ultimately combine to form three levels of trump! It's a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/152/mu-more
4. Skip-Bo - A classic: http://www.boardgamecapital.com/skip-bo-rules.htm
5. Pit - A game that I actually used with my middle school students when I student taught to help showcase some of the craziness of the trades on the stock exchange. Absolutely fun game with a large group of people. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pit_(game)
6. Mille Bornes - Another game I played a ton in my youth. http://www.centralconnector.com/GAMES/Milleborne.html
7. Sequence - Combination Board Game/Card Game.
I've always wanted to learn how to play a couple of card games as well. Never learned how to play Skat, but was always interested.
Brings back a lot of great childhood memories!

I've played A LOT of different card games in my life, but the top spot has to go to VTES as the most involved and complex card game ever.
Black Chantry Productions are the licensed producers of Vampire: The Eternal Struggle, the collectible card game based on the role-playing game Vampire: The Masquerade, set in the World of Darkness, the game setting of White Wolf Entertainment.
Vampire: The Eternal Struggle is a card game in which you take on the role of an ancient vampire, a Methuselah. For thousands of years you have lurked in the shadows of human societies, manipulating mortals and younger vampires. Your hunger for power knows no bounds, and you use whatever means possible to weaken your enemies, from subtle mischief to frontal assault. You must increase your influence and destroy the other Methuselahs one by one, before they destroy you.
The game has been out of print for almost a decade but has been recently picked up by BCP and Paradox Interactive and is going strong now.
Why is it the most involved and complex game ever?
1. It's designed for multiplayer - unlike many other card games this one was designed from the ground up to be played by 5 players, not as a duel, by the same person who created MtG and Netrunner.
2. Crazy deck building - you get 2 decks, crypt with vampires that must have at least 12 of them and library with 60-90 cards in it, each without limit on a number of copies of a card. With over 3500 different cards this creates A LOT of possibilities.
3. Crazy gameplay - as soon as you play a card, you draw a card, combo potential is through the roof.
5. Tough choices - in a 5-player environment it's really hard to just bully others as they can simply gang up on you. Also, you only get points for eliminating a player to your left (regardless of who eliminates said player) so there's usually plenty of scheming and dealing with other players involved.
Overall, an amazing experience. You can find out more here: https://www.blackchantry.com/
Edit: damn, didn't notice it was a necro from 11 years ago
