+ Show Spoiler +He pulled the battery so he could sure it was really off and not making contact with any cellular towers that could track his location. Even assuming his phone was also a camera, he planned to capture Dexter red-handed, not just take pictures for evidence.

all cell phones (by law) have a gps kind of device in them. this is so you can dial 911 and have police/etc come to you.
+ Show Spoiler +one thing that is bothering me with the show is how lila knows who jimenez is. she never met him, i dont know how should would get into contact with him. another problem is that you know dexter isnt going to get caught. if i thought dexter had a chance of being caught, i'd feel twice as intense during the episodes.
the way i feel about dexter (the show) is similar to how i felt about death note, an anime. it had the same villian-as-protagonist mantra. if the writers decide to end dexter, they should end it in a similar, gut wrenching way.

the little bit with laguerta proving doakes' innocence...how will that play out
how will he turn doakes over to the police...

No, thats wrong. Most phones work off cell towers within the network and the phone can be traced to a smaller area (a few city blocks or something) but not specific. If a phone has GPS it will say so.
PS- This show is ridiculous.
