Hey all,

I got a Logitech G510 for Christmas, but my dad has given me the option of trading it in for a different model. The reviews of the G510 I read online were not good, so I'm considering trading it in. Please take the time to vote in the poll and post. Please explain why you like or don't like a certain keyboard. Thanks all

NGeX

EDIT: I was using a Logitech Wave wireless keyboard and mouse combo, but it died on me after 2 years. USB key broke. I don't want to buy anymore wireless products.

EDIT2: Ok, I'm vague on what I'm looking for in a keyboard.

- I would like the keys to be fairly well spaced as I usually misclick V when I want B.
- I want the board to be flat. My last one had a slight curve in it and it was rather uncomfortable for SC2 use.
- I would like it back lit, but it's not necessary.
- Anti-ghosting would be great as sometimes I think I have dropped gateways or hatches...when I really haven't.
- Mechanical is preferred but not required. (I honestly like the sound to know that I've fully hit the keys)
- Must not be wireless.

Is that a good enough explanation of what I'm looking for?

The switch is arguably more important than the keyboard itself.

Mechanical keyboards that use Cherry MX Brown, Red, or Blue switches are the most common. The typing feel across keyboards that use the same switch is for the most part identical.

Here is a good intro.

I'd say get the 6gv2. It's got black switches and has a very smooth feel. It's not loud like other mechanical keyboards, and many pros (such as IdrA) use it. Plus it's not completely ridiculously overpriced, like the 7g.

I feel like this thread is a bit vague, though I can definitely recommend a mechanical keyboard. I switched from a Lycosa to a 6gv2 recently, and I will never go back.

In terms of specifics, I would definitely say that if you're considering black switches, go for the 6gv2 rather than the 7g. All the 7g really has is USB/Headphone jacks, a wrist rest that you can easily buy cheap somewhere else, and a heftier price tag.

Do read up on switches though, if you are going mechanical. Steelseries uses MX-Blacks, the Black Widow uses MX-Browns. I'm not sure of any other easily testable switch colours that you may be able to find at any store.

Edit: Beaten to it by the post above mine. ^.^

A good friend of mine got a filco tenkeyless for about the same price as I got my 6gv2, so it's really up to your preference of switches if you're going for mechanical.

How can you forget to put probably the most popular keyboard in the poll? 6GV2 for the price is one of the best keyboards, feels very smooth and isn't very loud.

Qpad MK-50, can be ordered specially with different switches, original keyboard has red switches, cheap keyboard with surprising build quality for the price. You can also order the MK-80 (blue backlighting) and MK-85 (red backlighting) with own choice of switches. Go look at http://www.corporate.qpad.se/modules/news/

WASD Keyboards, can be specifically made with custom keycaps and switches.

Das keyboard, High quality keyboard with blues or brown switches.

Ok so forgot the 6gv2. Sorry. So maybe I'll reset the poll for fewer keyboards.

reds are absolutely not the most common, its deinitely browns blues and blacks that are most common.

The typing feel is also VERY different from brown/black to blue, have you touched a mechanical keyboard before? lol

Read the mechanical keyboard thread on the tech support section of TL, to the OP. You will learn a lot there, but more importantly, do your research before buying. The Razer blackwidow keyboard has the most votes on here because more people use it, but trust people who have used more than one keyboard before you hop right into it.

You didn't even read my post did you? Go back and look again.

I lumped red brown and blue into the same category.

I said that a switches of the same type feel similar. So a Das keyboards Blue MX switch is going to feel very close to any other keyboards Blue MX switch. This is just a reading comprehension fail.

If you want to discuss my usage of red instead of black as "most common" thats a different story.

Get a Filco or similar mechanical keyboard (Leopold, Rosewill, Das Keyboard, Ducky etc.). I personally dislike the Steelseries and Razer mechanical keyboards because of their built quality or because I dislike the switches (I HATE MX Blacks) but it's all down to personal preference.

Dude, you shouldn't be giving English lessons. You did say that those 3 were the "most common", you didn't mean it, but no need to get snotty because someone read what you wrote, rather than what you meant.

I'd go for Filco, and do some research on whether you want Blues or Browns. I have one with Blues, and it's excellent.

This is exactly it; the kind of switch you use really comes down to preference. I'd say try them each out, and see what you like best, and from there start looking at options that have the switch that you like. I know a lot of people on here have expressed a hatred for Black switches, but I wouldn't trade them for anything. Just gotta find out what you like!

Edit: Just read your updates on what you're looking for, and just wanted to make sure you know that a USB keyboard can only have "anti-ghosting" for up to 6 keys, I believe. If you want more, you'll need to use an actual keyboard port (can't remember the specific name). Just thought I'd let you know, because my desktop doesn't actually have that port.

Pick your switch

45g
blues - strong tactile bump - clicks
browns - light tactile bump - non clicking
reds - linear (no bump) - Non clicking

65g
blacks - linear (no bump) - non clicking
clears - Medium Tactile bump - non clicking

Now pick a brand
Filco - blues browns blacks (commonly) can get reds (130-160 price range) amazon
das - blues browns - student discount ~100 dollars (various)
Leopold - blues browns black reds clears ~99-120 (elite keyboards)
Rosewil - blues browns blacks reds ~80-130 (newegg, various prices random sales)
These are the cream of the crop mechanical keyboards, if you are okay with used keyboards check out geekhack

razer BW - blues -
steelseries - blacks

mainstream mechanical keyboards (lesser build quality)

if you want back lighting you need to either get a ducky shine or get a noppoo pro with blacks (they only make the lit one with black switches (best off getting both of these off geekhack) these do get pricey 130-160 + shipping from china or dealer

TLDR: go to geekhack and look at the wiki, educate yourself, make an informed decision as this is a keyboard that will last you for 5+ years easy

I think 5 years on a mechanical keyboard is a bit conservative. 20 years is a better lifetime expectancy and mechanical keyboards can be serviced.

For some reason I just love the standard microsoft keyboard. I have gone through 2 of them since the game has come out, with another one as backup. For 20 bucks, its great.

I have tried some mechanical keyboards in the past but for a game like starcraft 2 I dislike how the keys feel so springy and taut.

Don't touch the logitech, they die in 2 years. The steelseries 7G and Black Widow are your best options, as they are mechanical. The Razer Starcraft keyboard is tiny, and not really all that comfortable looking, more a gimmick. I honestly think that you should go Black Widow, I have one and it is a great shape and the macro buttons are in a relatively useful place. I use them to select either hatches or queens.

I've used a Razer Blackwidow, IBM Model M, and a Das Model S Ultimate. I actually felt I needed to exert more effort, causing a lot of discomfort. I tried each keyboard for about 2 months.

I had given away my Logitech G15 thinking I would love a mechanical. After the repeat failure, I bought a Logitech G110 and just now feel back to the point I was before. So much more comfortable.

So, I don't understand what all the hype is about mechanical. But I guess to each his own. I still believe it's all about comfort anyways.

@Creegz. You're joking me if you think Razer makes better built keyboards, or anything for that matter. Razers feel so cheap. Even Logitech's $50 keyboard feel better made than Razer's $100 ones. And to top it off, Logitech's customer service is 100x better.

Here's a blackwidow paint peeling with some use

The blackwidow was released, what a year ago? And people are already posting pictures of it doing that?
I had my G15 since release and it still looked practically new with some light cleaning. When I gave it away, the person I gave it to thought I'd only used it for a few weeks.

let me break it down to you real easy: DON'T GET the slim or non-standart funky keyboard. Just classics.
If you are gonna buy mechanical keyboard, don't get the razor/steelseries they are not proffessional, trust me. The best choice is Leopold/Filco/Rosewil.

If you don't wanna spend a fortune on a keyboard like me (mouse>keyboard), then I'd suggest

A4-Tech X7-G600
[image loading]

perfect keyboard. cheap membrane. keys are big, not flat/slim. good space between keys, it's kinda loud (makes you pretend you have a mechanical keyboard lol). no media keys (I mean why would one need those)

I'm playing on this keyboard and I love it. Got a couple of those 1 year ago in case my shop stops selling them and I have one spare, but during that year only a couple of letters became a bit greyish, not white, everything else is in great condition.

I must say I love this keyboard. So if you're not planning to buy mechanical go with this one.

_-* EDIT: price is 20$ btw *-_

P.S.: in the box there are regular wasd and arrow keys, so if you don't want rubber, you can change it back. What I did is put rubbered "W" on the "V" place, and "A" on the "4" (they look almost the same kekekekek). So I have rubbered 4, S, D, V. Yeah, I play Zerg so you can guess why :D...So my "A" and "W" are regular right now.
it's all a joke

Thank you sooooo much for this link. I was searching for a fitting mechanical keyboard almost all day and was very close to going into full rage mode. I got Razer's BlackWidow a few months ago, but it didnt work for me, so i resold it to a clanmate (no palm rest, terrible macro-keys on the left side), then started searching for other backlit keyboards but almost none. Then i found IOne's XArmor series, which seemed fitting, but isn't available in german Layout. That means it acutally is, but not the backlit version. No turns out QPad looks exactly like IOne's X-Armor except of some additional "decals" and free choice of layout and switch! Looks like i finally found my keyboard which fits 100% .

Get a keyboard where production money is spent on quality parts and not on ridicolous colors or "ergonomic shapes". Which means, it costs either 1 buck and breaks after a month, or 100 bucks and lasts your whole life.

I prefer my filco tenkeyless with cherry brown switches. I've never tried red or black, but they're supposed to be good for gaming. I also played on a Das with blues, which I hated, and IBM Model M with Switches from Heaven, which are way to heavy for my skinny hands. It was kinda ridicolous getting exhausted from pregame APM spam.

Type on the same keyboard you play and really learn how the keys are and how much pressure they need. I used the same keyboard for daily work over a year and it just gets better. That's why I play mech, baby.

Edit: I also play some on my HHKB with topre switches, which are supposedly the finest switches in the world, but I really can't recommend that. The timing is more difficult than with plain cherry browns.
You can use control groups to train units without even looking at your base.

If you want black switches id say get a 6gv2, for blues or brown Das or Filco will have a lot of good options. I wouldn't reccomend getting a black widow, ive had issues with 2/2 models ive used and i personally dont like the extra buttons or the shape of the board itself.

the world's a playground. you know that when you're a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.
