When it comes to pure ZvT, its usually a mid-game muta/lurk which evolve into lurker/ling/defiler. But from looking simply at the micro mechanics involved, it feels like dark swarm combined with ling and lurkers is only semi effective. Because in a tank-light SK army, after the dark swarm comes up, the m&m force just moves away from the dark swarm area. The lings are not ranged so its harder to hit the retreating m&m force.
I do agree that dark swarm will take care of tanks, but for simply SK terran army, the terran army will just move back. Especially because lurker takes a while to burrow, they can engage the zerg army until lurker tries to reposition, and just hit, move back, hit, move back.
However, when the m&m get plagued, its a different story. You can probably skip lurkers entirely, and use mass lings to overwhelm the m&m plagued force.
So how viable is fast defilers (skip lurker, muta, ultra, very early hive) combined with mass plagues? (I mean mass) Using cracklings, and upgrading their armor to 3.

Ignoring for now the practicalities of actually microing pure defiler/ling, there's still the issue of getting there in the first place. As soon as Lair finishes, going Queen's Nest -> Hive -> Defiler Mound -> build defilers and start Plague -> Consume (or Consume before Plague) is just too slow. You can't expect to stay alive with pure ling until defilers come. You absolutely need some Lair tech or you're going to get totally destroyed. Either that, or you make 2928431 sunkens and pray he doesn't get drop.

Yea getting to hive will be practically impossible without mutas or lurkers. Also, pure defiler/ling doesn't make sense, because if your lings have +3, imagine how strong your ultras are , thre is no reason to leave ultras out of the equation if you are gonna rely on hive tech anyway.

I agree, but before the tank push, I think mass sunkens is good enough for just bionic units. Drops can be prevented with mass lings, just be ready for drops and have lings right on the drop point then they can't do much damage with it. The problem is, the tank push comes before defilers probably. I don't know how early that early defilers can come out but maybe not skipping lurkers is also an option

I dont think that would work imo most of the time. Better off just playing standard and throwing down queens nest earlier than normal and going from there.

Also, securing a third gas is critical to success with hive tech - another thing hard to do with no lair tech.

Even without the tank push, without lurkers or mutalisk, you'd be stuck at 2 gas while 2 gas SK Terran will eventually irradiate all your gas expensive units. Lair tech units help secure the 3rd or 4th gas for the transition to the more expensive hive tech units.
I have lost to 2 gas defilers before, but it was my own fault due to macro and late tech.
