I saw quite a few games recently where zerg goess mass hydras. I wonder whats the point of that? Sure they can snipe science vessels easier (but scourges are not bad at that job either), but they are much less efficient vs bio than lings+lurkers, are not they? Not to mention tanks.

Zerg players had enough from Dropships flying over there defending base army, winning the game for the Terrans, even though they spread overlords, lings to spot, saw the drop, defended it. At least now they can snipe the stupid high reward, last resort, super ultra play or just die to marines higher dps.

hydras are actually really good TvZ vs SK terran. this game by soulkey is the best example of mass hydras vs bio i can think of
edit: not to mention it’s also vs Rush, best vesal user and probably the best SK terran user

It seems like the preferred strategy for pros on maps where it's harder to take a 4th gas ( Sylphid, Eclipse, etc). Upgraded hydras + defilers + some lurkers are a good combo vs SK terran that only really need 3 gas. It allows Zerg to break out of their natural once defilers are out and try to push out and get a 4th gas. Something that is so much harder if they try to just wait longer and squeeze out a few ultras instead.

But lately now that the current map pool has more maps with easier 4th gas I've seen pros sorta switching back to classic ultra-ling-defiler style. So I think it's sorta player and map dependent but it's definitely a strong viable strategy. But if you let the terran take 4+ gases they can build up a strong tank army that is very hard to break with hydras. I've even seen players like queen start off with hydra/defiler to get a 4th gas and then try to do a really late tech switch to ultras once they see the terran has built up a huge tank army.
