In case you never checked out my blogs or are too lazy to download the mod (available at campaigncreations.org), here's a recap of some of the media I produced for the project. AO is now released and considered final although many of the things I wanted to polish or finish never got done. That's what happens when you're a suicidal schizophrenic lunatic with barely the will to get up in the evening.
I plan to make a full incarnation of the concept in Starcraft 2. Since I had some interest here with the blogs and the modding guides that failed in the contest horribly, I'll probably post about it if/when that time comes.
These videos include both technical demonstrations I created throughout the mod's lifespan and some CGI stuff I attempted with my extremely infantile knowledge of 3ds max.

I have tried many times to make a release demonstration video covering most of the units including the Great Destroyer but since Xfire is such a terrible, terrible program and either doesn't record or desyncs the sound, and guncam crapped out on me, and everything else lags like hell... I've pretty much given up on that. There was one time Xfire played nicely and I got a full gameplay video out of it. So, here it is! I'm not responsible if you kill yourself from my commentary.
If you're expecting amazing B+ gameplay, you'll be disappointed. I used to be decent back in the day, but not anymore, especially when I'm playing some random test game I wholly expected to crash and be a waste of time. Also, my map is terrible. I'm not much of a mapper.

Here's my voice acting demo reel, too, just for kicks.

You might call me the Boxer of the modding world. I'm all washed up now, though. Thought about taking up commentating; I'll probably wait until the sc2 beta to see if I can get a key or not, and devote my time to covering all of the details of sc2 and trying to see what can be done in terms of modding, then make 1920x1200 videos out of it all.
Well. Some people seemed to enjoy these videos. Let'see if anyone else does.

Looks interesting! I tried running it, but once I try to start single player SC crashes saying "unable to find glue/PalCs/BackGnd.pcx. Not sure if I'm just missing something from the FAQ, but any ideas how to fix? My SC isn't cracked or anything.

lol great attack effects the flying dragons look imba :<

lol this dragon in the 3rd picture is from baldur's gate II isn't it?

Trippy with Diablo units in Starcraft! Anyways how does the mod play really? Do the player control the usual broodwar armies against all this units you showed or did I get this all wrong?

Pie pie pie pie pie pie pie pie!
I tried this with some friends the other day... your beta testers must be extremely lucky, or you've added some extra digits to the stats, because we never managed to survive into the midgame at all :D. Good work, Mesk.

I haven't gotten around to trying this out but it looks like a lot of fun.

Do you have a link to step-by-step instructions for a retard like me to get this running? Once I have it running can I revert back to normal Starcraft easily?

Seconded. Also, what is this game all about? Is it a team game where you try to survive the attacks of an A.I?

There's a readme file when you extract the .zip. Basically you:
1.Extract the game. 2.Extract the BWAIDowngrader.zip that's included. 3.You run the BWAIDowngrader v1.16.1.exe and choose 1.10. 4.Run AO3.0.exe. 5. Make a game (I went multiplayer, LAN, chose the included map Big Game Rofflecakes, Top vs bottom 7v1, set all teammates to toss/terran and enemy as armaggedon.
I just played and I had a few dissapointing issues. First off, you removed right click rally!? Right click rally is necessary for me, especially in a macro map like this. Secondly, my protoss ally built pylons everywhere and blocked me in my base. When I started destroying his stuff, cannons killed a bunch of my units. Thirdly, my game crashed at like Tier 2.
Hopefully you reconsider your final release if enough people show interest and you can combat your mental illness.
Edit: You can patch back up to 1.16.1 using the BWAIDowngrader. Because my game crashed, I had something running in the background that I needed to end task before it would patch properly though. If you restart or end task those processes, you can patch back and it works fine. Edit2: Actually, it may have broken my UDP. I'm going to try repatching. Edit3: Yeah, the Downgrader broke my LAN (UDP) when I went back up to 1.16.1. Use SCV Selector instead.

There's one super buff AI. You play 7v1 against the AI and try and kill his base before he owns you all.

The rally point is because it's 1.10, I didn't intentionally remove it and nor can I restore it. Apologies.

I have absolutely no idea. Never heard of the game crashing from that. Weird. :\ You used the downgrader, right?

Basically, the idea is an expansion of the old UMS maps where players controlled heroes against waves of zerg. Except now you control either the terran or protoss (Zerg are unplayable due to the limitations of Starcraft, I had to cannibalize them and the installation/platform tilesets for free graphic slots) and you are facing a new race.
Thirdly, my game crashed at like Tier 2.
Odd. And yes, you need a nice big map like the one I supplied or bigger if possible. The AI needs a lot of space to build. Avoid playing on maps with neutral buildings or "sprites" like dark swarm and stuff.
Hopefully you reconsider your final release if enough people show interest and you can combat your mental illness.
Other than polishing the existing stuff there's not really a lot left I can do. I had a team of testers help me try to pinpoint the crash but we have had absolutely no success at all. If the cause for the crash was located, I'd probably release a small update. Until then, AO serves its purpose as a proof of concept and tech demo. The real thing will come with sc2.
To revert to b.net ready starcraft, the Downgrader can do that as well. Unless you're saying the downgrader STILL has problems... I've already updated the freaking mod package like 5 times because of the broken downgrader. God damnit.
|
Yeah, I tried to get the Downgrader to go back to 1.16.1 and it seemed to work fine except LAN (UDP) was busted. That's key for people who use hamachi or LAN. Alternatively you could just use SCV Selector.

Well, that error would mean it can't find one of the background images which is really weird because the only one I changed was the title screen, and if that was somehow missing from the mod then it'd just default back to the original. I really have no idea why it would give you that error unless you somehow modified the default mpqs or something. :\
Or unless it was the downgrader that broke it. Try using that SCV Selector the other dude posted it and see if it fixes it.

Really nice mod. I installed it and play a few games with it. I did crash both times around 30 minutes into it though. Anyways, the sprites and graphics are pretty cool. I like the d2 animations and sprites. I plan to get a few friends to try to beat the AI with them sometimes.
Also, would it be possible to implement Armageddon as a playable race, or would that just be too much work/impossible UI wise?
|
It's possible but it's a lot of work and not something I am really motivated to do. Plus, balancing it would be extremely difficult. It works as it is for the AI because Armageddon units cost nothing and are produced virtually instantly, and even then it can sometimes be beaten. In a player's hands, certain units would be far too powerful (imagine a player with 10 Mal`Ash's or the Great Destroyer), and you simply can't limit them.
In the sc2 version I do plan to have Armageddon playable, but balancing it will be a very difficult thing even with the added capacity to limit units.
