It's not that remaking old maps is a problem. Fatal Combat is just a rework of Ride of the Valkyries, but that map hasn't been played competitively since 2005, and we have no idea how the pros of today would adapt to it. Meanwhile, the entire modern meta was developed on standard 4p maps, and there's nowhere to go but down balance-wise. There's two ways to look at it: either show us innovative new maps to watch how pro players develop new strategies, or show us the maps we're actually going to play on ladder so we can learn from the pros. I should say though that these maps aren't entirely dull and uninspired. Polypoid has Rhynadons that wander through the bases and block your buildings and expansions, forcing you to send units there to kill them. Don't you love it when your fourth base is delayed by 12 seconds because you had to wait for your worker to kill a critter? Maybe they did it just to give Brood War's top professionals the authentic 2009 experience of being behind at random due to bad map design. | ||
