Everybody can work hard. I think it's useless to think, "I'm trying so hard, why am I not getting better?" If it doesn't work out, there has got to be a reason for it. I think that you need to make the most of the individual strengths only you have and find a special something with which you can strike and advance.
The Commander of Zerg, 'Maestro' Ma Jae Yoon
- What kind of person is Mae Jae Yoon? Please introduce yourself.
▲ Though I am simple at times, I'm the type to succeed once I focus properly.
- Why did you decide to become a progamer at such a comparatively young age?
▲ At the time, I was just a student who liked to play games in my free time, just like other students. I sometimes had the chance to play against progamers while I was in school, and although I nearly always lost, I managed to take a game here and there. And then I suddenly thought, "If I had the opportunity to practice as much as them, I probably wouldn't lose!" I think this burst of confidence was what made me a progamer.
- What incident was the most memorable to you after becoming a pro?
▲ I can't forget the memories I made participating in the WCG last year in Seattle. When I heard the WCG's theme song 'Beyond the Game' on the stage, my heart started beating uncontrollably and I felt good. Even now I often listen to that song.
- At that point in your career did you go through the most exhausting time?
▲ I'll have to say that it's recently. Although it was also tough when I first started out, that time seems more like a long-past memory to me. The 'now' that I can feel these days appears as the most difficult to me.
- What was the most memorable game to you, and why?
▲ The 6th game of the 2nd proleague finals the team's been to. It wasn't me who played it, but my team mates, the coaches and everybody really hoped to win proleague, and it also the time when I had most ardently wished for victory. Frustratingly, we lost, and that day burned itself into my memory.
- What game do you personally regret the most?
▲ The GOM TV MSL Season 1 finals against Bisu. It was the final game of the season, but I wasn't a good finale for me.
- Out of your teammates, who are you especially close to?
▲ Although we always seem like we're very close, the relationships between the team members can be a bit awkward But we do get along. Memory is one of the juniors on the team who follow my orders very well.
- What about players from other teams?
▲ Perhaps Shark, RuBy, Stork, oDin, Bisu, and Hwasin.
- How do you spend your spare time?
▲ These days I often look for old VODs of myself. I used to watch them occasionally before, but these I watch one or two after getting up while getting ready for the day. And when I get something worthwhile to share, I also upload it to my cyworld mini hompy to preserve the good memories I make as a progamer.^^;
- What do you like about your personality and what do you not?
▲ I think one of my good points is that I am more forgiving of others than of myself, and that I'm the type to see things through to the end once I've firmly decided on something. However, there are times when I show myself to be simple and honest to the point of stupidity. (note: loose translation of 고지식하다, which can mean simple and honest, gullible, or even naive).
- What's your ideal type of girl?
▲ Someone who leaves a good first impression and feeling. I think these are the most important things.
- What is the greatest treasure you're carrying around with yourself right now?
▲ I am. Because the one thing that has brought me to this point and what has to do all the important things I need to do in order to live a good future life is myself, I think that how I am is more precious than anything else.
- Who was your most memorable fan?
▲ When I was doing an interview back stage after having lost to Bisu in the finals, I saw a fan crying miserably in the distance. My heart ached and I still can't put her out of my mind. I think she wasn't crying out of happiness that Bisu had won because she was sitting in my fan aisle.^^; (note: Korean doesn't use sex-specific pronouns, so he didn't explicitly state if the fan in question was male or female. I just went with female pronouns because... well, that seemed more likely).
- Out of the things you had to give up in order to be a progamer, what do you regret the most?
▲ Just like other athletes, progamers have to sacrifice their youth from a very young age on in order to succeed. I had to give up the memory of school life, and like BoxeR said in his interview, the possible career paths are limited. Of course, just as there are things you lose there are also things you gain, but because being a progamer is not an example of a normal life, sometimes I yearn for the things that could have been. (note: liberal translation by me).
- Who are the people who have influenced you the most?
▲ My parents. They taught me the things that I couldn't have learned from anyone else anywhere else, and I think they have influenced me more than I can feel. Although I haven't been able to be a filial son yet, in my heart, I am always thankful to them.
- What do you need the most right now?
▲ Maybe space. Private space.
- Are there any new things outside of the game you've become interested in and like to try?
▲ Many. There are really many things I'd like to try but can't because of circumstances. It's quite regretful. But I don't have any plans on giving up and think I'll just try to go forth slowly, one by one.
- Out of the juniors at your team, who do you think is the most promising?
▲ This interview is intolerable;; in order to preserve the peaceful relations between the players, I think it's better if I don't reveal that and just think about it privately.^^; (note: interesting, especially since most players I've seen seem eager to speak well of their team mates...)
- A word of advice to all those aspiring to become a progamer.
▲ Everybody can work hard. I think it's useless to think, "I'm trying so hard, why am I not getting better?" If it doesn't work out, there has got to be a reason for it. I think that you need to make the most of the individual strengths only you have and find a special something with which you can strike and advance.
- What are your thoughts on being promoted from B-Team back to A-Team, and what are your resolutions for the future?
▲ I don't really care about that. It's nothing to be proud of. I just want to keep the many thoughts in my head to myself and I think I will be able to do well in the future. (note: I think the implication is that he thinks that A-Team is where he belongs, so getting promoted to it is nothing to brag about).
- The question BoxeR asked you: what ceremony are you preparing if you win against firebathero in the next formal match...? Don't say, "Just watch it at the time!", I'd like you to announce what kind of ceremony you'll do! I like you and him both as juniors, but since there are so many people interested in this match, be a good sport!!
▲ BoxeR must hate me T.T If I reveal my ceremony now, then I'll have to do it no matter what... that's the kind of atmosphere this creates;;
Truthfully, in the past, I've often thought of ceremonies even when I said I wouldn't do any. The ceremony I have in mind is going over to his booth after winning, giving the glass a knock, and then doing a gesture. But I haven't yet decided which gesture to do.^^;
- Choose the next player for the 30Q&A series and ask a question.
▲ Samsung Kahn's oDin. You got the nickname 'Ju In Seong', how do you feel about it;;? (note: I don't know what this nickname means. zasmii suggest it may be a homeage to the Korean Actor Jo In Seong, who oDin apparently looks like.) Also, you seem to like the girl band Wondergirls and Girl's Generation; out of their members, who do you think matches best with you;;^^ And lastly.. at some point in time, I'd like you to buy me dinner. Make that promise on Fomos^^
- A word to your fans.
▲ I'm really sorry about all the bad rumors about me lately.^^; Although I feel sorry for not having been able to reward you enough for you to believe in me and support me, but I take a lot of strength from the fact that there are still fans left who always support me. I'll make it so that I only see the name 'Mae Jae Yoon' in communities, just like old times. I love you ^^
Special: What your fans are curious about! (will this interview ever end...)
- Recently you lived in the B-team quarters. It must have been hard, but was it also an interesting experience to you?
▲ Many people seem to long for new experiences, but I don't necessarily think like that. Because I wasn't allowed to go to any fun places, and digesting my daily practice schedule was almost unbearable, it seemed like my life consisted of cycles of practice - food - sleep only. If you really want to know about something 'interesting' I did... maybe that I could to prepare food for the first time in a long time, that I had to clean every day, or that I had to the dishes. ^^;
- You started out as the youngest player on G.O. and are now a senior player on CJ. What has changed?
▲ Although it's not something I can talk about at home, there are some parts that I can feel have changed for some reason. When the practice players look at me, I feel like they view me as a model example, and that they tread very carefully because they think they have things to learn from me. I like it, but it can also feel burdensome.
- On the day that Much did the 'heart' cereomony, what ceremony did you originally request?
▲ Really, I've never requested any ceremonies^^; Much asked his seniors what ceremony he should do, and they told him to draw a heart with his pylons. So I said, "why not do (something else)?", but he refused what I told him saying it didn't match his character.
- What was the greatest deviation from your gaming life that you have done in your career, and is there something you haven't tried yet but would like to?
▲ I haven't done it yet, but I would like to. Even if it's just for a week, I'd like to go to a recreation area with a nice view to take a long and quiet rest. I'm counting the time on my fingers until that day comes T.T
- People call Bisu and firebathero your rivals, but how is your true relationship with them?
▲ About Bisu, I can say that we've become close after meeting at so many tournaments and events like interviews. But I haven't met with firebathero very often yet, so it seems like there hasn't been any opportunity to get close yet.
Inside the Samsung team, it's said that the relationship between oDin, Stork and firebathero is a little strained, so I'm treading carefully so that won't extend to me. But I don't feel anything special when either of them faces me as my opponent.^^;
- Does the interest and critique about you that's been spilling forth burden or stimulate you?
▲ It seems like it's more right to say it's been a stimulus. Although I don't go onto Starcraft communities very often, on the occasions that I do, I find what I see encouraging. Like I've said earlier in the interview, I also often watch old VODs of myself because they have the same effect.
- You have a whole lot of nicknames, which one of them do you like the best and which the least? If you could also tell me the reason, I'd be very grateful.
▲ Mabonjwa, Maestro, I like these best. A little while ago, I saw some article that listed all the many nick names I had. Now, I can even easily smile at nick names such as Mamakjang or Maminpye (마막장, 마민폐, something like Ma-mess and Ma-nuisance respectively). There are many articles out there that curse, but if you look for them, there's also many fun ones
