Completely disagree. If you are bad at something but get enjoyment from it, you should accept criticism and try your best to improve. How many people have been less talented than their opponents but used pure determination to reach the top in their field? Many. And it's not like there's a universally top caster that is above all the new guys.

Edit: If anything, the people who are bad at commentating but improve get more respect from me than the opposite.

The problem is many of the new commentators don't want to improve their game knowledge (i.e. don't play themselves) and will get really childish and pissy every time they see criticism and probably just ban you from the stream.

People like Day9, Tasteless and Artosis, who actually play the game will always garnish more respect and are extremely rare.

Care to name any who commentate but don't play themselves?

Your post is a whole bunch of fuck
Natural talent just allows you to learn to be better at a certain thing faster then someone talentless could. Hard work will ALWAYS get you where you want to go, unless you are physically or mentally handicapped

If public speaking is a talent then oh god am I screwed in life lol.
It's kind of odd to single out commentating like this. Simply playing RTS games requires way more innate 'talent' than commentating, though obviously that doesn't mean you should stop playing if your thumb tendon flexibility factor is below 0.13431 or something.

The best got to where they are today because of interest and passion to some extent but largely due to dedication to the craft.

This is true of Tiger Woods, Beethoven, Micheal Jordan, Michael Jackson and any other example you take. They had talent to get into the right craft, their physique was complimentary to the profession they chose.

Micheal Jordan was constantly beaten by his elder brother who never went past 6'1" in height. Jordan was 6'6" so that was the only "gift" that he received. Wonder what would have happened if he had read a fucked up post on quitting when he "didn't know the game enough, didn't have charisma (lol), didn't work to be funny"...

Do you think these things are ingrained from birth? We all start with nothing. It's how we are molded. I haven't seen babies be super charming funny and sophisticated sitting with a cigar. Where did they learn that from? Do you think Will Smith is who he is today because of "natural" talent.

Do you think Jay Leno is "naturally funny" for 30 years on stage? If so you need some serious rethinking to do. Sure day[9] is "better" at the start than most and well 2 other people who are often quoted aren't good enough, but that doesn't mean someone who has a lot of passion shouldn't be given the platform to try.

That stuff about Einstein is true btw. He failed math at a younger grade. Whatever would we have done if he had listened to his teacher who told him he would amount to nothing. Or Sir Richard Branson who was dyslexic. God Forbid he listened to someone who had a post like this..

What? Bullshit. The guy was a mathematical god, I find that very unlikely.

I don't think he flunked while trying iirc, he flunked for being a smartass I think. He hated the German school system at the time.

Fame was like a drug. But what was even more like a drug were the drugs.

Not everyone has the speed to be a basketball player, not everyone has the smarts to be a chess player, and not everyone has the charisma to be a commentator.

I understand the charm about bringing E Sports and having people listen to you cast great games, but if your genuinely bad at something please do not do it. You cannot practice being more charismatic, you cannot practice being entertaining at the moment, and you cannot practice being outgoing. Your either NATURALLY TALENTED or your NOT.

I mean look at Day 9 does he force himself to be funny and be knowledgeable about the game? No he is a charismatic guy that takes the moment and runs with it. Again I just want to stress this not everyone can be an actor, a comedian, or a ballet dancer. If you can't do something DON'T DO IT.

Now I'm not saying don't be a commentator, but please for the love of god if you stumble on your words, are boring as shit, have no charisma, have no knowledge of the game, and can't entertain the audience, PLEASE rethink your choice of being a commentator. And no commentating more and more does not make you a better commentator. As much as you play basketball you won't be Michael Jordan because some people are genuinely better at certain stuff more than others~

I am going to use my 1000th post to call you a tool: You sir, are a tool.

You're bad at posting. You don't have a natural talent for it. No matter how much you practice, you will never write a quality post, ever. Never post again.

Now, take some time to think about the examples you used: actor, comedian, ballet dancer.
Actors typically go to school for years to develop their skill, and they rehearse (aka, practice) constantly
Comedians have schools, but not everyone goes to them. Typically, comedians will use gigs at smaller clubs as a way to practice.
Ballet dancers need to start young. If you don't get in early, you can't practice and train enough to get the flexibility you need. Ballerinas and Ballers (lol? I don't know the male word) typically have to practice for most of their lives to be good.

So, once again: You sir, are a tool. Good day.

Isn't this the same as saying no one should ever play Zerg or Protoss, Terran are the only one with natural talent!! Of course people should still play Zerg/Protoss not only because a Terran only SC2 would be horrible but also people will discover new things and make the other races dominant. Time can change anything.

All the "good" commentators named here are from SC1; meaning they have had a lot of practice. Extra commentators do not hurt and if you don't like them don't tune into their streams; but obviously they are providing entertainment to some people.

If you have a problem with a commentator why not send them a PM saying what your problem is so they can improve. The long term solution is almost always improvement not elimination.

Is this trolling? Public speaking is one of the most eminently trainable skills that exists, and it is something everyone can benefit from. As for impossible to improve game knowledge, well...

No, it must be trolling. Nice attempt though.

It was sarcasm. No worries though, I guess it doesn't get communicated too well over the internet lol
