My brother bought FEAR2 the other night, which is a steam game or whatever. He installed and activated it onto his laptop, but wanted to install it on my desktop computer which has better hardware.
The problem is...we have a HARD COPY of the game...two DVDs...but Steam in all its practicality, decides it wants to force us to download off of their servers. This will take like six or seven fucking hours when we have the DVDs right here. I can't figure out how to force it to pull the data from the DVDs. I even tried cutting the internet, but Steam just sat there with the DL window open, not doing anything.
This is fucking ridiculous, and Steam is a horrendous pile of shit.
Does anyone know how to get it to install off of the discs?

I believe it's possible to just copy the data from your laptop to your desktop and Steam should detect it. I would try just copying C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps over

can't you just install the game normally and then add it to steam? i remember doing that with CS before oO

Copying the file info would first, take forever, since there's more than 10GB of install information (and would be terribly inconvenient), and wouldn't there be issues with the registry?
Also, no. You can't even install FEAR2 without installing Steam first...which is fucking stupid, as the box doesn't come with a steam installer, requiring you to have an internet connection to DL the steam client first. Even off of the discs, it installs through steam.
Steam is a fucking piece of shit.
EDIT Oh, and would you look at that...the download was just interrupted. Now I need to wait AGAIN to get connected to a server.

usually you should have an installer on the dvd which will install the game into your steam account
installing into your brothers laptop wasnt a problem?

I would just transfer the whole Steam folder over (not just the steamapps folder as I said before) just to make sure everything is transferred

WTF you need to install Steam in order to play Fear 2? That is so dumb, Fear 2 is not even a Valve game. Dammit, Steam is good but its getting out of control.

The launcher starts up Steam, then immediately begins prepping for download.
It's gonna take FOUR FUCKING HOURS to DL it..then patch updates...omfg. So fucked up. I HAVE THE FUCKING DISCS RIGHT HERE OMFG. MY BROTHER'S COMPUTER IS TEN FEET FROM MINE.
