I've listened to a lot of new music within the past year but none have come close to making the same impact upon my indie music sensibilities as a humble two man American folk tandem who are The Dodos. They come from San Francisco, California and have remained largely obscure until recently their second LP, "Visitor", the one I got into, drew a lot of praise from critics who frequently compare them to indie sweethearts Animal Collective and label them as psych folk. However from listening to a lot of Animal Collective, Devendra Banhart, etc, and fuckloads of music in general I feel the Dodos are not really psych folk nor able to be organized more specifically into a musical category other than the general genre of folk. They have a very original blend of musical voices that is the main appeal for me about the band.

The lead vocalist/guitar player Merrick Long sings slightly like Elliott Smith, but with a very different voice. His guitar playing is complicated, folky, rhythmic, and with some world music influences. It's essentially melodic with very catchy hooks which is indeed somewhat similar to Animal Collective. But the overall style has no comparisons I can think of in popular indie music.

On the other side of the guitar, the band's drums played by Logan Kroeber, creates as much of the Dodos' sound as Long's guitars and vocals. From interviews Kroeber said his drumming is metal influenced. I don't exactly know what that means, but his drumming has a very unique and powerful rhythmic sense to it, which sometimes feel even primal. It is an integral part of the group's overall sound but undeniably sepearate from Long's guitar. It's also like nothing I've heard before, but much more so than the guitars.

I digged up some of their live performances on youtube. They mostly sing about old lovers, memories but with some metaphoric political and social commentary in between.

Their single off "Visitor": "Fools"

One of my favorites, "Ashley"

A song off of their first album, "Beware of the Maniacs". "The Ball"

Another song off of "Visitor," "Red and Purple"

Hope you liked it.

I just logged on for the first time in a while to say thanks. I've seriously been looking for music that solidly mixes these kinds of sounds like this for a while.

Ever read "You Aint No Picasso?" link

Seriously. I really appreciate these observations. I'm sorry, but I have to admit that I watched the videos before really reading your OP and the things you said were exactly the things I was thinking about.

I love that folk music seems to be headed toward an interestingly rhythmic but also experimental sort of time lately. I don't know exactly where it came from, but my friends and I think it's partially the result of the way "Strawberry Jam" is thoroughly animal collective but also easier to listen to first shot than "feels" or "tung songs".

Sort of like Sigur Ros' new album.

(Can I post a link to a place to listen to this song other than you tube? If not I'll remove this right away.)

Wow I was totally thinking about making a thread about The Dodos ever since I saw them in concert last week. They are just too awesome. I'm glad to see that there are other fans on the site. I just love their style.

Edit: I wanted to add how much I loved the guy wailing on a garbage can for half the songs. It added a very cool and unique sound to the percussion.
It's easier not to.
