Yes, literally, I'm trying to build a bowl, and I'm looking for some advice/help.

This is however, no ordinary bowl. It needs to:
  • Have a hole in the bottom that we can insert a small propellor into, that would then be attached to a motor.
  • Be circular, however one 'side' needs to be flat, as it will be placed flush against a wall. So it needs to be as if we cut off a section of the bowl.
  • Be watertight once we attach the propellor/motor.

As background, this is part of a digital/physical installation a group of students and I are making for an assignment. Basically we are planning to find a big bowl and then cut it, however worst case scenario is that we can't find one so I'm asking for advice/ideas on how we'd go about building one in that case.

So yeah, any reccomendations on materials, etc would be awesome

Oh, also needs to be relatively large, maybe looking for 1-2m diameter and 30-50cm deep.

EDIT: Here's a basic pic of what we are looking for.

Do you think you could mspaint up a rough outline of what you are talking about with the cutting? I can not picture it at all. Also, 1-2m is a really big freaking bowl.

Edit: Actually, unless other people want it, you can scratch the mspaint thing, I am going to sleep anyways. Good luck.

does it need to be transparent? i dont think it is easy to find a spherical bowl of that size. Perhaps you could use one of those huge excercise balls as a mold for a fiberglass contruction. Contact some people who make fiberglass boats/canoes to do the job for you if you are not confident doing it yourself.

I have no idea what do you mean with "bottom" or "side" or part is "30-50cm deep" or what size is the hole if you don't tell us exactly what it is. I can imagine thousands of different things that would fit in your description. Just put all the info in the picture already.

And I can't tell you what a good material is if I don't know what is gonna happen to it. Does it need some heat resistance? How much? Does it need to be strong? How much? Are you gonna burn it? Electro-shock it? Put an elephant on top of it? Eat it with cereals?

Ok, sorry if I had a lack of details before, I'll explain now I'm out of class and back home.

Basically the brief is, make a digital/physical installation to place into the new library being built on campus. There are 10 groups of 3 in the class and best one gets in. A lot of the stuff people are coming up with is pretty wanky stuff that you'd expect from a class of 'designers', and tbh I don't even know what to classify ours as. An early picture of our concept is this:

There have been some small changes to the concept since it's inception, bringin a more recent and technical drawing to this:

The blue-grey colour is the bowl, and the black circle is the hole which the propellor will be shoved through.

If you want I can explain everything, but suffice to say that what's gonna happen to it is that it will be filled with water, which will spin around inside the bowl every 10-20 seconds due to the propellor spinning for a small period of time every 10-20 seconds. It will also have a constant vertical projection onto the water/bowl.

Hope that further explains what we're trying to do. Thanks for any help!

EDIT: The drawings aren't perfectly to scale or anything, by depth I mean from the top of the bowl to the bottom in the center. The side is the part of the bowl that will touch the wall.

Thanks for the advice I'll def look into that.

ok the new pics was totally not what i had imagined. It looks like your in need of a shallow basin rather than a bowl so maybe kitchen or bathroom suppliers have something you might be able to use.

Also, if its going to be placed in a library i doubt they would allow you to make it a water feature due to the humidity and risk of mould growing in the books.

i dont understand what you mean by a constant vertical projection into the water.. you mean projecting an image into the basin from above?

And lastly, if you want to achieve some ripples in the water it may be easier to make a vibrating diaphram (like a loudspeaker) instead of a hole with a propeller i imagine it would look less conspicous and much easier to get the water seal done. Alternatively you can send vibrations from the side or just virbrate the entire dish.

I totally agree here. It looks just like a bathroom sink If you look for bathroom suppliers you might as well find something ready that fits your purpose and you won't even need to build one. Which would save you some money and time.

Haha sorry I probably didn't describe it very well in the op. Yeah that's one thing we're looking into for buying something (basin idea). as I said in the OP this post is mainly so that if we can't find anything suitable we have a backup.

As for the water aspect, that's a valid concern and we were worried about it too so we checked with the library and they were fine with it. And yeah "projecting an image into the basin from above" that's what I mean.

We wanted a spinning effect, however this might be more effective so I'll bring this up with the others tomorrow.

Yeah, same as I just said a bit earlier, that's one thing we're looking into before we go ahead and build this, I'm just making sure we have a backup.

Thanks everyone for your help!
