I was given a multiple choice practice test and these questions bother me.

Which of the following is the most direct result of the presence of acid chyme in the small intestine?

A) The liver produces insulin
C) The stomach produces pepsin

A or C?
I eliminated out the wrong choices ( i think )

In animals, all of the followign are associated with embyronic development except:
A) Migration of cells to specific areas
B) Formation of germ layers
C) Activation of all the genes in each cell
D) Inductive tissue interactions
E) Cell division at a relatively rapid ratenk this is it)

For the first question, C.

When pepsin converts the food it turns into a liquid-like substance which is the acid chyme.

I remember this info. when I took AP Bio when I was in 2nd year high high school.

Thank you, wise one.

I'd like to see all options for the first question before I give you the answer. Keep in mind that the question notes the presence of acidic chyme in the SI, and not the stomach.

For the second, are you thinking the last option is correct? Rapid cell division is obviously associated with embryonic development, since a single cell repeatedly divides to form a fetus. The correct answer is C. Since all cells of a fetus derive from the same cell, they will all have the same DNA. The only way cells can move along different pathways of differentiation, and hence form different types of cells and organs, is for some genes to be selectively turned off (its more complicated than this). The genes that control this are called HOX genes, if you're interested in reading more.

Gandalf pretty much has it wrapped up, but I agree with him on the 1st question tho, because pepsin is triggered when the acid enviroment of the stomach converts pepsinogen into its active form (pepsin) so why would the stomach secrete pepsin when acid chyme is in the SI? The presance of acid chyme is supposed to trigger an alkaline soulution to neutralize the acid being secreted along with other enzymes. Plus the liver doesnt secrete insulin

pro-tip: the pancreas produces insulin, not the liver.

also I agree, I think you should include the other options.

and the other people are right that the second question is C.

The question reads it backwords tho, as if the presance of acid chyme triggers the production of pepsin which is not the way it should be worded. Out of those 2 choices tho C is the obvious choice. I still would rather see the other choices tho.
