I'm in Oregon but want to move to So Cal (warm) - - San Diego, LA, or anywhere else in between. I might have to sleep in my car for a month while I work. . . but I'd have enough money for food and showers. I don't mind really; my main fear is cold.

Does anyone have any help/tips/connections/backyards/gravel driveways.... that I could use as transition into apartment?

Again, main point is to move down into lower latitudes and work and live. (I like the ocean).
Nowadays, housing is harder to come by, but just by chance.

*forgot to mention that I could pay some rent would just be very short term.

If you absolutely have to, you can try parking overnight at some Walmarts in SoCal. Not all of them allow overnight parking due to city laws, but I'm sure you can find some that will let you. If you decide to sleep in your car, I advise to get some way to block out your windows so you get much needed privacy

I don’t think I can help you, but best of luck. Youre doing something I wish I had the guts to do. The only thing I could offer since Im in an awkward housing situation myself, is maybe a gym membership for showers. But that might be a rude suggestion since you clearly lack capital atm.

LA resident here. Grew up in the Coachella Valley.

Try Palm Desert Park. You won't be alone. There's also Thousand Palms, very desolate but near emergency services if something goes awry.

Tons of jobs in the LA basin if you must have city life. I can hook you up with Penske if you are clean of drugs/DUI.

Should anyone find themselves in a similar scenario, Penske is hiring in SoCal. Your mileage WILL vary with them as they do on the job training. Aptitude and a willingness to move often will be a plus, some people go from fueling trucks to a tech 3 mechanic (lubes, does basic maintenance) within 3 months. Others fuel trucks until they leave Penske.

Fuelers start at a bit over $20 per hour. This will barely get you by in house poverty in California, however...

Tech 3 makes 32, tech 2 makes 38 starting, tech 1 makes 42 starting. All positions have Union benefits. Union is Teamsters.

HMU for a foot in the door.

There are also entrepreneureal opportunities with Penske in SoCal right now.
